Objectives-The purpose of this study was to establish reference charts of fetal biometric parameters measured by 2-dimensional sonography in a large Brazilian population. Methods-A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted including 31,476 low-risk singleton pregnancies between 18 and 38 weeks' gestation. The following fetal parameters were measured: biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length, and estimated fetal weight. To assess the correlation between the fetal biometric parameters and gestational age, polynomial regression models were created, with adjustments made by the determination coefficient (R-2). Results-The means +/- SDs of the biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length, and estimated fetal weight measurements at 18 and 38 weeks were 4.2 +/- 2.34 and 9.1 +/- 4.0 cm, 15.3 +/- 7.56 and 32.3 +/- 11.75 cm, 13.3 +/- 10.42 and 33.4 +/- 20.06 cm, 2.8 +/- 2.17 and 7.2 +/- 3.58 cm, and 256.34 +/- 34.03 and 3169.55 +/- 416.93 g, respectively. Strong correlations were observed between all fetal biomettic parameters and gestational age, best represented by second-degree equations, with R-2 values of 0.95, 0.96, 0.95, 0.95, and 0.95 for biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length, and estimated fetal weight. Conclusions-Fetal biometric parameters were determined for a large Brazilian population, and they may serve as reference values in cases with a high risk of intrauterine growth disorders.

Congenital anomaly and perinatal outcome following blastocyst- vs cleavage-stage embryo transfer: systematic review and network meta-analysis

C. Siristatidis, M. Papapanou, V. Karageorgiou, W. P. Martins, I. Bellos, D. M. Teixeira, N. Vlahos

Summary: A meta-analysis comparing blastocyst-stage and cleavage-stage embryo transfers found no significant difference in the risk of congenital anomalies, but blastocyst transfer was associated with a slightly increased probability of a male neonate. A network meta-analysis showed that frozen-blastocyst transfer had a lower risk of low birth weight compared to fresh-blastocyst or fresh-cleavage transfer, but had an increased risk of perinatal death compared to fresh-cleavage transfer.

Summary: This study assessed the trophism of the lower limbs of fetuses with open spina bifida using fractional thigh volume (TVOL) measured by three-dimensional ultrasound. The results showed no significant differences in TVOL between normal fetuses and those with spina bifida, while fetuses with spina bifida and without spontaneous movement of the lower limbs had lower TVOL values.

Congenital intra-hepatic porto-systemic shunts diagnosed during intrauterine life: Systematic review

Darlei Neves Carneiro, Isabela Rossi, Nagibe Tayfour Oliveira, Lorena de Moraes Oliveira, Mariana Rodrigues, Edward Araujo Junior, Rodrigo Ruano, Alberto Borges Peixoto, Marina Carvalho Paschoini

Summary: This study describes the ultrasonographic characteristics, outcomes, and evolution of congenital porto-systemic venous shunts (CPSS) diagnosed during pregnancy. The data shows that the majority of fetuses were diagnosed with intra-hepatic CPSS at 33 weeks. Preterm delivery, fetal growth restriction, and postnatal treatment were common issues.

The use of cardiac ultrasound imaging in first-trimester prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart diseases

Renato Silveira Ximenes, Nathalie Jeanne Bravo-Valenzuela, David Baptista Silva Pares, Edward Araujo Junior

Summary: This study aims to explore ultrasound features that could allow early diagnosis of major congenital heart diseases (CHDs). High resolution ultrasound images of various CHDs were evaluated to provide useful tools for assessment. Results show that early ultrasound detection of most major CHDs is feasible. Safety concerns, findings on early fetal cardiovascular hemodynamics, and progressive cardiac lesions during pregnancy were also discussed.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the consumption of ultra-processed foods by Brazilian pregnant women and its impact on the nutritional quality of their diet. Data from the 2017-2018 Family Budgets Survey were used to measure food consumption, and the foods were categorized using the NOVA classification. The results showed that ultra-processed foods accounted for 20.9% of the total calories in the diet of Brazilian pregnant women. Higher consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with reduced intake of nutrients and decreased nutritional quality of their diet.

Summary: This meta-analysis based on individual participant data suggests that endometrial scratching may improve live birth rates in women undergoing IVF/ICSI. However, the effectiveness of scratching may vary in different subgroups, and the timing of the procedure may also play a role. Therefore, the use of endometrial scratching in clinical practice should be done cautiously and patients should be informed about the level of evidence and uncertainties.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of overweight and obesity in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy on fetal cardiac function parameters. The results showed that overweight and obese pregnant women had higher fetal left ventricular modified myocardial performance index (Mod-MPI) and right ventricular E' compared to normal weight pregnant women. However, there were no differences between the groups in terms of 5-min APGAR score < 7, neonatal intensive care unit admission, hypoglycemia and hyperglobulinemia.
