The 5:1 rule overestimates the needed tunnel length during ureteral reimplantation

Kourosh Kalayeh, J. Brian Fowlkes, William W. Schultz, Bryan S. Sack

Summary: Our study confirms the importance of the UVJ length-to-diameter ratio in preventing reflux. As the bladder volume increases, the UVJ length-to-diameter ratio decreases, leading to UVJ closure and an increase in flow resistance. The surgical implementation based on this observation results in an overestimation of the required tunnel length-to-diameter ratio.

Obstetric ultrasound: where are we and where are we going?

Jacques S. Abramowicz

Summary: Diagnostic ultrasound (DUS) has evolved rapidly in obstetrical practice, from A mode to three-dimensional/four-dimensional ultrasound, with the application of artificial intelligence expected to further advance the technology. New visualization methods, expanded training approaches, and improvements in workflow and ergonomics may be seen in the future.

Front-End Architecture Design for Low-Complexity 3-D Ultrasound Imaging Based on Synthetic Aperture Sequential Beamforming

Jian Zhou, Sumit K. Mandal, Brendan L. West, Siyuan Wei, Umit Y. Ogras, Oliver D. Kripfgans, J. Brian Fowlkes, Thomas F. Wenisch, Chaitali Chakrabarti

Summary: 3-D ultrasound imaging offers advantages over 2-D for more accurate tumor and cyst analysis, but 3-D systems face challenges with data processing speed for power-constrained portable systems. Synthetic aperture sequential beamforming (SASB) resolves this by splitting computation into two stages.

Spatially-directed angiogenesis using ultrasound-controlled release of basic fibroblast growth factor from acoustically-responsive scaffolds

Summary: Vascularization following tissue implantation is crucial for viability, and the ability to spatially control this process using acoustically responsive scaffolds has been demonstrated in this study. The study found that spatially-defined patterns of acoustic droplet vaporization can elicit spatially-defined patterns of angiogenesis.

Incidence of malignant transformation in the oviductal fimbria in laying hens, a preclinical model of spontaneous ovarian cancer

Summary: The study found that tumors in the oviductal fimbria of hens exhibit similarities to ovarian high grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) in patients, expressing similar markers. This suggests that tumors in the oviductal fimbria of hens may serve as a preclinical model for studying various aspects of spontaneous ovarian HGSC in women, including early detection.

Summary: Currently, there is no coherent and overarching framework for health protection from non-ionising radiation (NIR). The World Health Organization's international framework aims to promote a globally consistent approach for NIR protection and provide guidance to governments on achieving effective protection, especially in the context of rapidly developing new technologies.

Summary: Adnexal lesions are common in women and most of them are benign, requiring a conservative approach. Transvaginal ultrasound plays a key role in evaluating the risk of malignancy, but recognizing the acoustic shadow is a difficult skill to master and its usefulness may be underestimated.

Longitudinal wall motion during peristalsis and its effect on reflux

Kourosh Kalayeh, Haotian Xie, J. Brian Fowlkes, Bryan S. Sack, William W. Schultz

Summary: For the first time, this study takes into account the longitudinal motion of the walls during peristalsis in a distensible tube and its effect on backward flow, or peristaltic reflux. Using an analytical model based on lubrication theory, the study models peristalsis as a two-dimensional infinite sinusoidal wavetrain. The study develops an objective function to find optimal peristalsis conditions with high mechanical pumping efficiency and low reflux. The results show that optimal wall longitudinal motion significantly limits reflux during peristalsis, in agreement with clinical observations of ureteral peristalsis.

Real-time spatiotemporal characterization of mechanics and sonoporation of acoustic droplet vaporization in acoustically responsive scaffolds

Mitra Aliabouzar, Bachir A. Abeid, Oliver D. Kripfgans, J. Brian Fowlkes, Jonathan B. Estrada, Mario L. Fabiilli

Summary: Phase-shift droplets generated a range of bioeffects via the mechanism of acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV), which could be applied in therapeutic and diagnostic ultrasound. This study visualized ADV-induced mechanics and sonoporation in fibrin-based hydrogels using ultra-high-speed microscopy, confocal microscopy, and focused ultrasound. The results showed that fibrin gels containing perfluoropentane (PFP) droplets exhibited significantly higher radial expansion, expansion velocity, induced strain, and displacement of tracer particles compared to gels containing perfluorohexane (PFH) or perfluorooctane (PFO) droplets. Cell membrane permeabilization was dependent on the distance between the droplet and cell, decreasing rapidly with increasing distance. The hyper-local region of influence by an ADV bubble correlated inversely with the boiling point of the phase-shift droplets. These findings provide insights for the development of optimal approaches for therapeutic applications of ADV.
