Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) has been used as a technique to promote mother-child bonding. It has been discussed of its use for preterm under mechanical ventilation. The objective of this study is to assess the vital signs of preterm infants with a birth weight lower than 1500 g who are under intubation and hemodynamically stable in KMC. Forty-three preterm infants with a mean gestational age at birth of 29.1 +/- 1.6 weeks and a mean birth weight of 1.1334 +/- 2318 g. The preterm infants were longitudinally assessed for 90 min (15 min before, 60 min in KMC and 15 min after). These periods were compared, and the dependent variables heart rate, oxygen saturation (SpO(2)), axilary temperature and mean arterial blood pressure were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Clinically, however, the results were not significantly different. The results show that KMC is a safe method under the study conditions presented here.

Invasive mechanical ventilation and biomarkers as predictors of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants

Camila Piqui Nascimento, Larissa Prado Maia, Patricia Terra Alves, Aline Teodoro de Paula, Jair Pereira Cunha Junior, Vania Olivetti Steffen Abdallah, Daniela Marques de Lima Mota Ferreira, Luiz Ricardo Goulart, Vivian Mara Goncalves de Oliveira Azevedo

Summary: The duration of invasive mechanical ventilation in the first 48 hours of life is a significant clinical predictor of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in very low birth weight infants. The use of continuous invasive mechanical ventilation is associated with increased ratios between GM-CSF and eotaxin, indicating increased lung injury and disease progression.

Summary: This study compared mother-infant interaction between hospital discharge and six months of corrected age for preterm infants born < 32 weeks and investigated the association between the onset of skin-to-skin contact and the difference in mother-infant interaction. The results showed that early initiation of skin-to-skin contact had a positive impact on infant behavior, while delayed initiation significantly reduced the quality of mother-infant interaction. Multiparous mothers or those exposed to cigarette smoke performed worse in the development of the dyad.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between dose of skin-to-skin contact (SSC) per day and initiation time with the occurrence of deaths in newborns weighing up to 1800g. The results showed that the first SSC before 206 hours of life can reduce the risk of neonatal death. SSC for more than 146.9 min/day was associated with a lower death rate, and the chance of death was zero when there was no early infection or late sepsis.

Hypothermia and neonatal morbimortality in very low birth weight preterm infants

Rafaelle Cristine Oliveira Cordeiro, Daniela Marques de Lima Mota Ferreira, Heloisio dos Reis, Vivian Mara Goncalves de Oliveira Azevedo, Airan dos Santos Protazio, Vania Olivetti Steffen Abdallah

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of hypothermia in the delivery room, at admission, and 2 to 3 hours after admission in preterm infants with very low birth weight (VLBW), its associated factors, and its possible relationship with morbidity and mortality. The results showed that hypothermia was prevalent in the studied population, and the neonatal temperature was directly proportional to gestational age, birth weight, and Apgar score. Hypothermia was associated with maternal factors, such as cesarean delivery. Therefore, implementing and improving strategies for preventing hypothermia is necessary.

Factors associated with skin-to-skin contact less than 180 min/day in newborns weighing up to 1,800 g: multicenter study

Adna Nascimento Souza, Zeni Carvalho Lamy, Marivanda Julia Furtado Goudard, Sergio Tadeu Martins Marba, Roberta Costa, Laize Nogueira de Caldas, Vivian Mara Goncalves de Oliveira Azevedo, Fernando Lamy-Filho

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate factors associated with less than 180 min/day skin-to-skin contact in newborns during hospitalization. A prospective observational cohort study was conducted in Brazilian neonatal units. Data from 405 mother-child pairs were analyzed, and maternal and neonatal variables were collected from medical records and interviews. The variables associated with less skin-to-skin contact time were lack of easy access to the hospital, lack of previous knowledge of the kangaroo method, and maternal morbidities during pregnancy. Health policies should prioritize mothers without easy access to the hospital and who are unaware of the kangaroo method to promote greater skin-to-skin contact during their child's hospitalization.
