Summary: This study aims to explore the anti-cancer mechanisms of ascorbic acid (AA) and the interaction between AA and iron. High concentrations of AA showed cytotoxicity in cancer cells and induced ROS-dependent non-apoptotic cell death. Surprisingly, exogenous iron could reverse AA-induced ROS generation, Ca2+ overload, and cell death, and iron supplements also impaired the in vivo anti-tumor activity of AA.

Summary: In this study, the anti-tumor effect of ascorbic acid combined with metformin in prostate cancer was evaluated. It was demonstrated that ascorbic acid inhibits prostate cancer cells proliferation by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), and metformin enhances the anti-tumor effects of ascorbic acid. Mechanistically, metformin reduces oxygen consumption rate and NADP+/NADPH value in prostate cancer cells, thereby increasing the ROS content induced by ascorbic acid. Moreover, ascorbic acid inhibits p-AKT signaling in a ROS-dependent pathway, leading to inhibition of p-mTOR expression, and metformin inhibits the p-mTOR expression by activating the AMPK signaling pathway, exerting a synergistic effect on tumor suppression with ascorbic acid. Furthermore, metformin improves tumor oxygenation, and the combined treatment effect of ascorbic acid and metformin were demonstrated in a xenograft model of prostate cancer.

Summary: Vitamin C (VC) has strong bactericidal, anti-biofilm, and virulence-suppressing effects on carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-hvKP). It induces reactive oxygen species generation to kill the bacteria and inhibits biofilm formation by suppressing exopolysaccharide (EPS) production. In addition, VC acts as an efflux pump inhibitor to disrupt EPS and capsular polysaccharide transportation, further inhibiting biofilm and capsule formation. Virulence-associated genes in CR-hvKP are downregulated when exposed to sub-MIC of VC. VC could be an effective and safe therapeutic agent for urgent cases when other treatment options fail.

Summary: The ascorbate-based formulation was characterized and its molecular dynamics were investigated. The formulation was found to be amorphous, biocompatible, safe, and long-lasting. In vitro studies showed significant migration potential and non-toxicity. The formulation promoted wound healing via up-regulation of angiogenic and collagen-promoting growth factor gene expression while down-regulating pro-inflammatory gene expression.

Summary: This study investigated the anti-browning potential of Rosa roxburghii in apple juice and found that it could effectively inhibit browning and PPO activity. The main anti-browning factor was identified as ascorbic acid, and seven phenolic compounds in Rosa roxburghii were screened as PPO inhibitors. These inhibitors induced mixed or competitive inhibition of PPO through hydrophobic forces and hydrogen bonds.

Summary: In this study, sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) were synthesized using a simple H2O2 assisted top-down method and applied in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) detection. By measuring the red shift in emission wavelength and fluorescence intensity quenching, a dual-sensor platform based on red shift of emission wavelength (RSEW) and fluorescence quenching of SQDs was successfully constructed. The platform exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards ALP and was able to detect ALP in serum samples and cells.

Summary: A ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform with smartphones was developed for the highly sensitive detection of GSH, AA, and ALP activity. The platform utilized the inner filter effect between persistent luminescent nanoparticles and 2,3-diaminophenazine to modulate the fluorescence signals. By measuring the ratio of the fluorescence intensity of DAP and PLNPs, a simple and highly sensitive detection method was achieved.

Summary: Data from high-throughput sequencing has provided a deeper understanding of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), and Vitamin C has been identified as a potential anti-leukemia therapy. As a co-factor, Vitamin C regulates TET enzymes in epigenetic regulation and also plays a role in antioxidant cellular response. Thus, Vitamin C has therapeutic potential in AML and there is growing interest in clinical trials.

Summary: This study aimed to use the HVED technique to preserve rose hip bioactive compounds and improve the quality of nectar products. Physicochemical analysis showed that rose hip and nectars were rich sources of polyphenols and ascorbic acid. HVED had minimal effects on the quality characteristics of the nectars, while pasteurized samples showed significant loss of nutrients. The HVED-treated rose hip nectar had satisfactory microbiological safety after storage.

Summary: The study found that continuous light before harvest can enhance the growth and AsA content in lettuce plants grown under high nitrogen levels, particularly with a 4R:1B light spectrum. Increasing nitrogen levels and the ratio of red light can promote AsA synthesis and recycling, leading to higher AsA content in the plants.
