Summary: Chitosan, a natural biopolymer, has wide availability and is suitable for extensive application due to its absorption, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. However, its water solubility is limited by its high molecular weight and degree of polymerization. This study aimed to enhance the physicochemical properties of chitosan by modifying it with fumaric acid. The modified chitosan showed decreased water solubility and thermal properties, but higher water solubility than native chitosan in a wide pH range. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the effectiveness of fumaric acid modification. The enhanced water solubility of modified chitosan allows for its increased application in the food, biomedical, and cosmetic industry.

Summary: The performance of fumaric acid and maleic acid as potential internal standards was investigated for accurate quantitation of metabolites in human blood samples using NMR spectroscopy, revealing fumaric acid as a robust standard for all three biospecimens and maleic acid as suitable for plasma and serum. This study provides new opportunities for improved and accurate quantitation of metabolites in human blood samples and strengthens efforts to combine and compare NMR and MS based metabolite data for metabolomics research.

Summary: Organic acids are important consumable materials with wide applications, and their global market is projected to reach $36.86 billion by 2026. To address environmental concerns and meet sustainable development goals, genetically-modified microbes are used for large-scale fermentative production of organic acids, replacing the traditional chemical catalysis process. However, low productivity has hindered the industrial-scale application of bio-based organic acids.

Summary: The lipophilicity of fumaric acid and maleic acid was determined using the shake-flask method and reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography. The experimental partition coefficients showed that maleic acid is less lipophilic than fumaric acid. Reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography was also used to evaluate the chromatographic lipophilicity of the two acids.

Summary: The effects of lanthanides (Ce, Pr, Nd and Gd) addition to aluminium phosphate glass on its thermal properties were studied. The glass transition temperature was enhanced due to increased rigidity of the network. Lanthanide-doped glasses showed strong glass-forming ability according to their fragility index values (m = 22-40). The specific heat capacity varied monotonously with lanthanide content. Formation of a monazite phase was observed in the 10 wt% lanthanide-doped glasses at temperatures between 913-920 K as indicated by exothermic peaks in DSC curves. FTIR spectra confirmed the structural stability of these glasses.

Summary: Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are regarded as the next-generation display and lighting technologies. Blue OLEDs, however, face challenges due to the lack of efficient emitters with high exciton utilization efficiency and long-term stability. Recently, d-f transition rare earth complexes have emerged as potential emitters for OLEDs with high efficiency and stability. This Perspective provides an introduction to OLEDs, an overview of previous electroluminescence research on d-f transition rare earth complexes, and discusses recent developments in cerium(III) complex- and europium(II)complex-based OLEDs.

Summary: The study demonstrates that high ambient temperature exacerbates the severity of experimental autoimmune uveitis in mice, leading to an increase in Th1 and Th17 cell frequency, as well as elevated generation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). These effects may be mediated by the NADPH oxidase-dependent pathway.

Summary: The thermal behavior of two commercially available sweeteners based on Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni was studied using TG-DSC and EGA. LC-MS/MS analysis was conducted to identify the steviol glycosides present in each formulation and the thermal degradation products. The results showed that the formulations exhibited thermal stability up to at least 200 degrees C, with different thermal decomposition products depending on the specific formulation. This can lead to changes in the taste and solubility of the sweeteners.
