Summary: This study elucidated the adaptive strategies of brine shrimp Artemia to high salinity and anoxia, including Heat Shock Proteins, Leaf Embryogenesis Abundant genes, and trehalose metabolism. Under high salinity, Artemia showed a high oxidative stress response and endocytosis/exocytosis as potential salt management strategies. Under anoxia, differential gene expression was observed in genes involved in mitochondrial function, mTOR signaling, and autophagy.

Summary: The study found that phloroglucinol can enhance the resistance of freshwater prawns to V. campbellii infection by inducing Hsp70, both preventing the occurrence of infection and reducing its spread without affecting the growth of prawn larvae.

Induction of transgenerational innate immune memory against Vibrio infections in a brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) model

Suvra Roy, Kartik Baruah, Peter Bossier, Daisy Vanrompay, Parisa Norouzitallab

Summary: The occurrence of transgenerational innate immune memory in invertebrates offers an opportunity for increased resistance against infectious diseases in offspring. This study investigated the creation and mechanisms of transgenerational innate immune memory in brine shrimps. The results showed that primed parental generation provided protection to subsequent generations against Vibrio infections, and the disease resistance was associated with changes in gene expression and epigenetic modifications.
