Summary: In this study, kraft lignin (KL) was fractionated into four types of lignin with different molecular weights (UL) using ultrafiltration membrane fractionation. Lignin nanoparticles (ULNPs) were then formed through self-assembly from the four types of UL. The low molecular weight lignin (ULA) exhibited good antioxidant properties, high brightness, and low polydispersity index. The ULNPs showed a narrow size distribution and high dispersibility in sunscreen, and their addition significantly increased the sun protection factor (SPF) value.

Summary: We report the first one-pot synthesis of methacrylic and acrylic polymers from benzylic alcohols via reversible complexation mediated polymerization (RCMP). This method allows for direct initiation from benzylic alcohols of lignin to yield polymer-grafted lignin, which can be used to form efficient UV-absorbing films with high transparency in the visible region. One-pot RCMP may serve as a practical method to obtain value-added functional lignin-polymer composites.

Summary: In this study, petroleum-based bisphenol A (BPA) was entirely replaced by unmodified kraft softwood lignin in epoxy resin formulation. Epoxidized lignin was prepared and confirmed by measuring the epoxy content using titration and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A fully biobased epoxy resin was prepared by mixing the epoxidized lignin with a biobased curing agent. The addition of bamboo fibers improved the flexural strength and modulus of the lignin-based epoxy composite.

Summary: A microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment was developed to fractionate bamboo biomass into three scalable fractions for the production of value-added bio-based nano-materials. Cellulose-rich residue was recovered and upgraded into lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs), lignin nanoparticles (LNPs), and carbon quantum dots (CDs) using in-situ esterification and hydrothermal methods.

Summary: Maleic acid is an effective solvent for lignin extraction, and successive organic solvent fractionation can yield lignin fragments with narrow molecular weight distribution and homogeneous structure. Ethyl acetate extraction results in lignin with the highest phenolic hydroxyl content and the lowest aliphatic-OH concentration. This method shows great prospects for the utilization and application of lignin.

Summary: A method for connecting unfilled natural bamboo using screws and metal plates was proposed in this study. Extensive testing was conducted to assess the applicability of screws in bamboo connections, and it was found that the risk of splitting was low with appropriate spacing between screws. The study provides design guidance and prediction of connection capacity for the proposed method.

Summary: In this study, the chemical linkage variations of lignin and lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) between different bamboo cell walls were investigated using FT-IR, 2D HSQC NMR, and 31P NMR techniques. The results showed that bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells had different substructures in their lignin, and there were also differences in the main chemical linkages of lignin and LCC. These findings can provide a reference for further research on biomass utilization and biorefining of bamboo.
