Objective. To investigate differences in the association of parental history of diabetes with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the offspring according to the sex of the parent and the offspring's body weight. Methods. A prospective cohort study of 4446 middle-aged non-diabetic Japanese men and women were followed in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, from 2002 to 2011. Subjects were categorized by their self-reported parental history of diabetes (no parental history, father only, mother only, and both). The association of parental history of diabetes and incidence in the offspring was examined according to overweight status adjusted for age, sex, birth weight, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, total energy intake, body mass index, and number of metabolic syndrome components. Results. During follow-up (median 8.9 years), 277 subjects developed T2DM. Parental history of diabetes was positively associated with T2DM incidence. However, stratified analysis by overweight status revealed that only maternal history was associated with increased T2DM incidence in non-overweight subjects (hazard ratio=2.35, 95% confidence interval: 1.41-3.91). While in overweight subjects, paternal history was significantly associated with higher T2DM incidence (hazard ratio = 1.98, 95% confidence interval: 1.19-3.28). Conclusions. Our results suggest that parental history of diabetes mellitus is associated with the incidence of T2DM in offspring differently according to the sex of the affected parent and the offspring's body weight. Summary: A study in Japan found that even smoking a small number of cigarettes per day is associated with increased mortality risks. Both male and female low-intensity smokers had higher all-cause mortality risks compared to non-smokers, and the risk further increased with higher cigarette consumption.

Summary: In 2020, the number of brain-dead donors decreased to 68 (69% of the year-on-year average) and the number of donors after cardiac death decreased to 9 (32% of the year-on-year average). 85 transplant centers suspended transplant surgeries in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly impacting organ transplantation activities in Japan.

Summary: Opioids can alleviate breathlessness and improve the quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Recent studies suggest that regular oral opioid use can decrease the severity of breathlessness, and morphine or codeine show significant acute effects. Further research is needed to optimize prescription methods and minimize adverse effects.

Cross-Sectional Associations between Living and Built Environments and Depression Symptoms among Chinese Older Adults

Summary: This study explores the relationship between living and built environments and depression among older Chinese adults. The findings suggest that living in a non-dusty environment with proximity to green spaces reduces the risk of depression, while the absence of barrier-free facilities and proximity to hospitals increase the risk. Dusty environments, lack of accessibility, and close proximity to hospitals and green spaces are associated with depression symptoms among older Chinese adults.

Summary: There is limited evidence on the relationship between DM in middle age and mild cognitive impairment. This study investigated the relationship between fasting blood glucose levels in middle age and cognitive function in later life. The results suggest that FBG level in middle age is negatively associated with cognitive function assessed later in life.

Summary: This study investigated the disconnect between patients and physicians in terms of treatment satisfaction in atopic dermatitis (AD) in Japan. It found that the main reasons for dissatisfaction were treatment efficacy and usability. Inconsistent treatment satisfaction influenced treatment patterns, clinical characteristics, and patient-reported outcomes.

Summary: The effect of body mass index (BMI) on esophageal and gastric carcinogenesis varies depending on subtype or subsite. In this study, a pooled analysis of 10 population-based cohort studies in Japan, we observed an inverse association between BMI and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, but a positive association with gastric cardia cancer. Additionally, a positive association was found for overweight or obese individuals with esophageal adenocarcinoma and gastric cardia cancer. The study highlights the subtype- or subsite-specific impact of BMI on upper gastrointestinal cancer in the Japanese population.

Summary: A risk assessment tool for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) was developed and validated in this study, focusing on modifiable factors and risk stratification. Nine modifiable risk factors were selected and the tool's performance was verified using cross-sectional and longitudinal datasets from a Chinese elderly cohort. The tool has significant public health implications for the primary prevention of MCI in elderly individuals in China.

The Value of Handgrip Strength and Self-Rated Squat Ability in Predicting Mild Cognitive Impairment: Development and Validation of a Prediction Model

Summary: Early identification of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is crucial, and physical function indicators can serve as low-cost early markers for cognitive decline. This study aimed to establish an early identification tool for MCI by combining upper and lower limb function indicators. Three models were developed and all showed good discrimination performance, with the model combining both upper and lower limb function performing the best. The final prediction model can assist health workers in early identification of MCI and support early interventions to reduce the future risk of Alzheimer's disease.
