A variable-bandwidth Fe-57 synchrotron Mossbauer source (SMS) has been developed by using pure nuclear Bragg reflection of a temperature controlled (FeBO3)-Fe-57 single crystal in the presence of radio frequency magneto-acoustic vibrations. It can generate single-line Fe-57 synchrotron Mossbauer radiation, whose linewidth is variable in the range of 10(-8) to 10(-6) eV. The photon flux increases by a factor of 10 when the bandwidth of Fe-57-SMS varies from 10(-8) to 10(-6) eV. This paper reports the methodology and experimental results of the beam characteristics. The first feasible application on quasi-elastic gamma-ray scattering has also been introduced to clarify the advantages and potential benefits of high-flux-broad-bandwidth Fe-57 synchrotron Mossbauer radiation.
