Summary: In this study, polymer/glass fiber fabric-based nanocomposite plates filled with different filler materials (barite, magnetite, and colemanite) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were fabricated. The mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, and radiation shielding properties of the specimens were evaluated. The results showed that the specimens filled with barite and magnetite exhibited adequate mechanical properties, especially in terms of Charpy impact strength. Barite-filled specimens outperformed colemanite and magnetite-filled specimens in terms of mechanical properties. Efficient dispersion techniques could further enhance the mechanical performance of the filler-modified specimens. Additionally, the thermal conductivity and radiation shielding properties of the specimens filled with filler materials were improved compared to specimens without fillers.

Summary: Due to the rapid development of information and electronic technologies, there is an urgent need to design and prepare new materials with electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding function to reduce electromagnetic pollution. In this study, a thin magnetic Ti3C2Tx MXene (MMX) nanocomposite film was successfully obtained by combining Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets with porous magnetic microspheres (PMMs), exhibiting excellent EMI shielding performance. The lamellar structure of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets provides flexibility to the MMX nanocomposite film, while PMMs enhance the attenuation ability of the film to electromagnetic wave energy. The rough surface of PMMs improves electromagnetic wave consumption and enhances the performance of Ti3C2Tx MXene EMI shielding nanocomposites.

Summary: The effects of high temperatures on the properties of radiation shielding concrete were investigated in this study. It was found that the relative velocity and damage index had a good correlation with the splitting tensile strength, indicating their potential for accurately assessing the failure of concrete under high temperatures. Additionally, severe spalling was observed in the barite concrete at 450 degrees Celsius, while the magnetite concrete exhibited better thermal stability and shielding performance.

Summary: The study fabricated a conductive melamine/polypyrrole/magnetite ferrosponge by depositing polypyrrole on a sponge via the oxidation of pyrrole with iron(III) chloride, followed by treatment with ammonia solution to produce magnetite. The composite sponge was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy for its molecular structure, and its conductivity was found to be dependent on compression. The sponge showed promising performance in electromagnetic radiation shielding in the GHz region, with polypyrrole providing radiation reflection and magnetite contributing to absorption.

Summary: In this study, PEO/B4C nanocomposite films with various concentrations of B4C-NPs were fabricated by the casting method. The properties of these films, including chemical and crystal structure, thermal, optical, electrical, and morphological properties, were examined. The results showed that the addition of B4C-NPs reduced the crystallinity and melting enthalpy of the films. The introduction of B4C-NPs also resulted in a reduction in transmittance, refractive index, and packing density, as well as an increase in conductivity. The SEM images revealed the presence of nanoparticles within the polymer matrix, accumulative nanoparticles on the surface, and cracks in the PEO/B4C nanocomposite films.

Summary: Newly developed polymer-based composites with potential applications in radiation shielding have been studied. By incorporating Bi2O3 nanofillers into LDPE polymers, a lead-free alternative for X-ray radiation shielding has been discovered, with advantages such as increased density, slightly improved strength and modulus, as well as cost-effectiveness. Experimental results showed a clear enhancement in shielding efficiency for the composites after adding fillers, demonstrating the potential for practical applications.

Summary: Polydopamine (PDA), also known as artificial melanin, was used to prepare a series of porous highly fluorinated polyimide/polydopamine (FPI/PDA) films via cyclodehydration. The films showed reinforced thermal, mechanical, UV-shielding, and photostability properties due to the hydrogen bond and porous structure. The addition of PDA improved the tensile strength and fracture elongation, reaching a maximum at 0.5 wt % PDA content. The porous FPI/PDA film exhibited excellent UV-shielding properties and visible light transmittance, as well as durability after UV irradiation.

Summary: A phenomenological model (PM) is used to simulate the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of a HoCo2 sample, and MCE parameters are inferred from the model. The HoCo2 sample exhibits two consecutive conventional MCEs with cooling via adiabatic demagnetization and shows double peak MCE behavior. It is recommended to use HoCo2 as a useful magnetic refrigeration material over a temperature range of 0-140 K because of its wide MCE spanning range, particularly for liquefaction of nitrogen and hydrogen.
