Synthesis and Characterizations of Magnetite Nanocomposite Films for Radiation Shielding

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films containing magnetite Fe3O4 nanoparticles have been prepared by co-precipitation method for use in gamma ray shielding and protection. Characterizations of the magnetite/PVA nanocomposite films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, and magnetization measurements. TEM images showed that the synthesized magnetite particles had about 6-11nm dimensions. Optical study's results revealed that the optical energy band gaps of thin films range between 1.82 and 2.81 eV at room temperature using UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The saturation magnetization (MS) value measured by vibrating sample magnetometer VSM was found to be 8.1 emu/g with superparamagnetic nature. The radiation shielding properties such as linear attenuation coefficients (l) and half-value thickness (HVT) for the magnetite nanocomposite films have been obtained experimentally for different photon energies. The results imply that these nanocomposites films are promising radiation shielding materials. (C) 2015 Society of Plastics Engineers

Validation and comparative study of the pesticides detection by enzymatic method

Summary: Validation and comparison of detection of malathion and fenitrothion pesticides using an enzymatic method based on cholinesterase inhibition were studied. The results showed linear relationships for both pesticides, indicating they could be accurately represented by the kinetic equation of non-competitive inhibition. The study obtained inhibition constants and IC50 values for malathion and fenitrothion, demonstrating good precision and effective extraction methods for determining fenitrothion in tomato matrix.

Optimization of reaction time for detection of organophosphorus pesticides by enzymatic inhibition assay and mathematical modeling of enzyme inhibition

Summary: Enzyme inhibition assay was used to detect organophosphates pesticides, with an optimized reaction time of 3 minutes for quantitative determination of fenitrothion. The reaction time affected the linearity of the noncompetitive inhibition equation, and enzyme inhibition reached a plateau at 5 minutes after pesticide addition.

Summary: A novel biosorbent 'Manna_COOH' was synthesized by dual reaction stages, with high carboxyl content. The oxygen-based surface functional groups on 'Manna_COOH' played a major role in making it a promising biosorbent for aqueous Co (II) uptake. The study assessed the cobalt ion adsorption capacity of the biosorbent under various process conditions, showing promising results.

Experimental and kinetic modeling study of multistage freezing-melting process and salt rejection of seawater

Characterization and adsorption of raw pomegranate peel powder for lead (II) ions removal

Summary: The adsorption potential of raw pomegranate peel powder (PMPP) for lead (Pb) ions was studied. The PMPP was extensively characterized using various analytical techniques. Detection of two magnetocaloric consecutive peaks in HoCo2

Summary: A phenomenological model (PM) is used to simulate the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of a HoCo2 sample, and MCE parameters are inferred from the model. The HoCo2 sample exhibits two consecutive conventional MCEs with cooling via adiabatic demagnetization and shows double peak MCE behavior. It is recommended to use HoCo2 as a useful magnetic refrigeration material over a temperature range of 0-140 K because of its wide MCE spanning range, particularly for liquefaction of nitrogen and hydrogen.
