Summary: The novel cathode NBC-GDC shows improved electrocatalytic activity and stability at high temperatures, with a significant enhancement of polarization resistance and different ion transfer characteristics compared to conventional cathode LSCF-GDC. NBC-GDC performs better and more stably in the oxygen reduction reaction than LSCF-GDC.

Summary: In this study, symmetric electrolyte-supported YSZ cells infiltrated with LSF were prepared, characterized, and tested in the oxygen reduction reaction. The effects of calcination temperature and precursors load on the ORR activity were investigated, with optimal performance achieved at 750 degrees C and with LSF loads between 20% and 40%. Equivalent circuit analysis of the EIS results indicated that the reactivity at the LSF/gas interface is rate-determining.

Summary: In order to improve the performance and stability of solid oxide cells (SOCs), this study compares anode-supported cells with thin films to those with conventional screen-printed yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). It is found that thin film structures can suppress nickel diffusion and reduce resistance, resulting in excellent performance and durability in fuel cell operation.

Summary: A series of Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates Ndn+1NinO3n+1 (n = 1-5) have been successfully stabilized in thin film form using reactive molecular-beam epitaxy, with high crystalline quality confirmed by X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The average Ni valence states in these compounds are in accordance with nominal values, as verified by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The metal-insulator transition temperature (TMI) shows n dependence for n = 3-5 members, and at low temperature, the resistivity for n = 3-5 members exhibits a log T dependence similar to parent compounds of superconducting infinite-layer nickelates.

Summary: Impedancemetric sensors for ammonia detection were fabricated using YSZ electrolyte and La(n+1)NinO(3n+1) sensing electrodes. Among them, the sensor with La2NiO4+delta sensing electrode showed higher response values and sensitivity, linearly dependent on NH3 concentrations, but exhibited a positive error when exposed to NO or NO2.

Summary: The electrode performance and degradation of 1:1 La2-xNiTiO6-delta:YSZ composites were studied under high temperature conditions, leading to the formation of La2Zr2O7 and NiO as secondary phases, which hindered ionic diffusion and oxygen access to surface active area.

Summary: In this study, a facile and scalable urea assisted ultrasonic spray infiltration technique was proposed for the nanofabrication of durable nanostructured solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes. The technique eliminates the need for high temperature calcination cycles and allows for faster fabrication of the cathodes. The results showed that the urea assisted infiltration combined with ultrasonic spray technique can be scaled up for any desired cathode area and lead to highly durable SOFC performance.

Summary: This study assessed the process conditions for fabricating porous uranium oxide microspheres through internal gelation. The effects of calcination temperature and pore-formers were investigated. Starch was found to be an effective pore-former, leading to increased accessible porosity. The infiltration of neodymium nitrate into the microspheres was successful.

Summary: The development of low-cost, commercially competitive solid oxide fuel cells with reduced operating temperatures is closely related to the search for new functional materials and technologies to improve the properties of established materials. Efforts are being made to improve air electrodes, which contribute to the degradation of cell performance at reduced temperatures. This review summarizes methods to improve the electrochemical performance of conventional air electrodes and provides background information for further development of electrode modification technologies.

Summary: An efficient hierarchical porous carbon catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction was developed in this study through a simple solid-phase synthesis method. The introduction of zinc helped inhibit nanoparticle growth and agglomeration, leading to the formation of active nitrogen species and porosity, thereby enhancing the catalytic activity. The optimized FeZn-N-C-1 catalyst exhibited a high half-wave potential and demonstrated promising performance as a cathode in a zinc-air battery.

Summary: Co-free REBa2Cu3O6+ẟ (RE= La, Nd, Sm, Gd and Y) triple perovskite ceramics were studied as cathodes for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. The orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition and its relation with electrochemical performance were investigated. The results indicate that an oxygen diffusion/incorporation co-limited process is the rate-limiting step of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A clear correlation is observed between the power density and ionic radii of the RE cation of these triple perovskites.

Summary: A homologous series La n(n+1)+x Ni n(n+5)+y Si(n+1)(n+2)-z has been observed in the La-Ni-Si system, which is a symmetric Ni-rich mirror to the La(n+1)(n+2)Ni n(n-1)+2Si n(n+1). Four homologous silicides have been discovered in the central part of the system at 1000°C, with crystal structures based on AlB2-type building blocks and larger equilateral domains composed of fused La-centered Ni6Si6 hexagonal prisms with an edge size equal to n.

Summary: A new mathematical model for solid-state lithium-oxygen batteries has been established, taking into account factors such as the transport of ions and oxygen molecules, and the kinetics of electrochemical reactions, validated by experimental data. The study concludes that factors such as particle radius and volume fraction significantly affect the battery capacity and active surface area.
