Biomonitoring of trace elements is of critical importance in human health assessment. However, trace element concentrations in biological fluids are affected by environmental and physiological parameters, and therefore considerable variations can occur between specific population subgroups. Brazil is a large country with large environmental diversity and with a limited knowledge of the reference values (baseline data) for trace elements in biological fluids. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) are still the dominant analytical techniques used for biomonitoring trace element analysis in clinical specimens. However, the use of ICP-MS is becoming more usual in clinical laboratory analysis. Then, we evaluated here a simple dilute-and-shoot method for sequential determination of Al, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cs, Mn, Ni, Pb, Pt, Sb, Se, Sn, Tl and U in urine by quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (q-ICP-MS). Urine samples (500 mu L) were accurately pipetted into conical tubes (15 mL) and diluted to 10 mL with a solution containing 0.5 % (v/v) HNO3 + 0.005% (v/v) Triton X-100. Diluted urine samples also contain rhodium, iridium and yttrium added as internal standards. After that, samples were directly analyzed by ICP-MS against matrix-matching calibration. Method detection limit (3s, n = 20) were in the ng L-1 range for all analytes. The method was applied to the analysis of 412 ordinary urine samples from Brazilian healthy and non-exposed subjects to establish reference values. Data validation was provided by the analysis of the standard reference material (SRM) 2670a toxic elements in urine (freeze-dried) (high and low levels) from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and reference urine samples from the trace elements intercomparison program operated by the Institut National de Sante' Publique du Quebec, Canada.

24-Epibrasinolide Delays Chlorophyll Degradation and Stimulates the Photosynthetic Machinery in Magnesium-Stressed Soybean Plants

Leidy Alves dos Santos, Bruno Lemos Batista, Allan Klynger da Silva Lobato

Summary: This study found that foliar application of 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) under high magnesium concentration can alleviate the negative effects of magnesium stress on soybean photosynthesis. EBR protects against oxidative stress, delays chlorophyll degradation, and improves magnesium content and photochemical efficiency.

Fundao tailings dam failure in Brazil: Evidence of a population exposed to high levels of Al, As, Hg, and Ni after a human biomonitoring study

Ana Carolina Cavalheiro Paulelli, Cibele Aparecida Cesila, Paula Picoli Devoz, Silvana Ruella de Oliveira, Joao Paulo Bianchi Ximenez, Walter dos Reis Pedreira Filho, Fernando Barbosa Jr

Summary: The study conducted in communities directly affected by the disaster revealed high levels of exposure to toxic metals such as aluminum, arsenic, mercury, and nickel. Factors such as community, drinking water, fish and seafood consumption, and smoking habits were found to be associated with metal/metalloid levels in their body. Well and tap water intake were identified as important sources of exposure to aluminum and nickel. The findings represent health risks to the groups living in the areas affected by the tailings dam failure, calling for further studies to evaluate the potential health effects of high exposure to metals and remediation actions from public health Brazilian authorities.

Cellular prion protein offers neuroprotection in astrocytes submitted to amyloid β oligomer toxicity

Caroline M. S. Marques, Rafael N. Gomes, Tatiana Pedron, Bruno L. Batista, Giselle Cerchiaro

Summary: The study investigates the involvement of cellular prion protein (PrPC) in neuroprotection under oxidative stress. The presence of PrPC showed resistance to oxidative stress in astrocytes, and PrPC plays a role in metal homeostasis and prevents protein aggregation. Additionally, PrPC can translocate SOD1 to cell nuclei under oxidative stress, potentially controlling DNA damage. Overall, the study suggests that PrPC activates cellular response and defense against oxidative stress, protecting neurons and ensuring astrocyte functionality.

Ionic homeostasis and redox metabolism upregulated by 24-epibrassinolide are crucial for mitigating nickel excess in soybean plants, enhancing photosystem II efficiency and biomass

M. P. Saraiva, C. F. Maia, B. L. Batista, A. K. da S. Lobato

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) can improve the nutritional, physiological, biochemical and morphological responses of soybean plants subjected to nickel (Ni) excess. The results showed that the application of EBR significantly increased biomass, which can be explained by improved nutrient content and ionic homeostasis.

How Different Na+ Concentrations Affect Anatomical, Nutritional Physiological, Biochemical, and Morphological Aspects in Soybean Plants: A Multidisciplinary and Comparative Approach

Breno Ricardo Serrao da Silva, Elaine Maria Silva Guedes Lobato, Leidy Alves dos Santos, Rodrigo Mendes Pereira, Bruno Lemos Batista, Mohammed Nasser Alyemeni, Parvaiz Ahmad, Allan Klynger da Silva Lobato

Summary: The purpose of this research was to investigate the negative effects of salt stress on soybean plants in terms of anatomical, morphological, nutritional, physiological, and biochemical parameters. The study found that concentrations of 50 to 200 mM Na+ significantly reduced the levels of K, Ca, and Mg in the plants, and had negative effects on photosynthesis, gas exchange, and photosynthetic pigments, which were likely caused by oxidative stress. Interestingly, at concentrations below 100 mM Na+, there were changes in epicuticular wax deposition, stomatal quantity and morphology, and leaf epidermis thickness in soybean plants. Overall, significant deleterious effects were observed in soybean plants under salt stress conditions above 100 mM Na+.

Summary: Occupational exposure to potentially toxic elements in informal jewelry production can have adverse health effects on workers. This study used proteomic and metabolomic analyses to assess the impact of these exposures on workers' exposome in Limeira city, Brazil. The results showed high levels of Sn and Cu in welders' blood, as well as correlations between certain proteins and blood PTE levels. Additionally, pathway analysis revealed seven metabolic pathways potentially disturbed by the informal work. These findings highlight the harmful effects of PTE exposure in the jewelry production industry.
