New pre-ligands of 1-aryl-1H-imidazol-2-yl substituted secondary phosphine oxides (HRP(=O)-Im:SPO-Im) were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic means. The SPO-Im pre-ligands are able to tautomerize to their corresponding genuine ligands, the 1-aryl-1H-imidazol-2-yl substituted phosphinous acids ((HO)RP-Im:PA-Im) while the condition permitted. Further reactions of selected SPO-Im pre-ligands toward Pd(COD)Cl-2 or PdBr yielded bis-(PA-Im)-coordinated cis-palladium dichloride or dibromide complexes, respectively. These cis-palladium dihalide complexes are all having an intramolecular hydrogen bond between two coordinated PA-Im ligands (R(Im(H)(+))P-O-center dot center dot center dot HO-PRIm) by transferring a proton from one of the two P-OH groups to its free nitrogen site of imidazolyl substituents; and, therefore, imposes the formation of zwitterionic cis-form palladium complexes. Three crystal structures of these square-planar zwitterionic palladium complexes were determined by the X-ray diffraction methods. Additionally, two novel NHC carbene coordinated palladium complexes were obtained from the crystal-growing process of the above-mentioned zwitterionic cis-palladium dihalide complexes. The crystal structures of two NHC carbene coordinated palladium complexes were also successfully determined. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to substantiate the feasibility of the proposed reaction pathways for the formation of NHC carbene coordinated palladium complexes. Finally, applying selected SPO-Im pre-ligands to Heck reactions with pre-optimized reaction conditions exhibited satisfactory performances. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Bulky Di(1-adamantyl)phosphinous Acid-Ligated Pd(II) Precatalysts for Suzuki Reactions of Unreactive Aryl Chlorides

He-Xin Xiao, Wan-Yun Hsu, Siou-Wei Liang, Yingjie Guo, Wan-Ching Lee, I-Chung Lu, Yu-Chang Chang

Summary: Two new PA-Ad-coordinated complexes were synthesized in this study, serving as effective precatalysts for the Suzuki reaction of aryl chlorides. Density functional theory calculations revealed that mono-ligated and mononuclear Pd species are catalytically active. Optimized reaction conditions can lead to reduced reaction time and catalyst loading.

Summary: Two newly designed Pd(II) precatalysts were synthesized and used to efficiently convert unreactive aryl chlorides, benzyl chlorides, and benzoyl chlorides. The deprotonation of the precatalysts led to the dissociation of NHC, and the proposed Pd(II) species could be reduced to Pd(0) using ethoxide. The size of salt additive cations and the basicity of the base were found to influence the catalytic properties.

Highly efficient and well-defined phosphinous acid-ligated Pd(II) precatalysts for Hirao cross-coupling reaction

Li-Hui Hong, Wei-Jung Feng, Wei-Chih Chen, Yu-Chang Chang

Summary: We synthesized a palladium complex (1a) with two different P-donors and proved its effectiveness as a Pd(ii) precatalyst for carbon-phosphorus bond formation. The complex exhibited efficient catalytic activity for the Hirao coupling reaction under environmentally benign conditions. Mechanistic studies were conducted to investigate the generation of plausible Pd(0) active species. The use of bulky di(1-adamantyl)phosphine oxide as a preligand and less bulky di-p-tolylphosphine oxide as the substrate in the coupling reaction was also demonstrated.

Rational design of organic semiconductors with low internal reorganization energies for hole and electron transport: position effect of aza-substitution in phenalenyl derivatives

Wei-Chih Chen, Yu-Chang Chang

Summary: Amphoteric-redox phenalenyl radical (PLY) is a suitable candidate for designing ambipolar organic materials due to its perfect local nonbonding character in the singly occupied nonbonding molecular orbital (NBMO) and small internal reorganization energy (lambda). Studying the position effect of aza groups on lambda in PLY derivatives shows that bond angle alterations are the main contributors to lambda, with most aza-PLYs having lambdas smaller than 100 meV. Two pi-extended PLY derivatives with small lambda are recommended for fabricating air-stable ambipolar OFET based on adiabatic ionization potential and electron affinity.
