Summary: The NHC-catalyzed intramolecular benzoin condensation-oxidation allows for the expedient synthesis of diverse cyclic 1,2-diketones incorporated in dibenzo-fused seven-membered heterocycles in good to excellent yields under ambient conditions. The transformation appears to proceed through the benzoin intermediate followed by aerobic oxidation.

Summary: Conventional methods for immobilizing N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC)-metal complex catalysts often use the substituent on the nitrogen atom as the binding site, with limited utilization of the bulky substituent characteristic of NHC ligands. In this study, a new catalyst design was developed that utilizes the backbone carbon of NHC as the binding point with the support. By introducing different silyl groups into the backbone carbon, catalysts with enhanced catalytic activity in C-N coupling reaction were synthesized. The immobilization of the catalyst with an electron-donating oxosilyl group on polystyrene resin resulted in high catalytic performance.

Summary: The research aims to synthesize homogeneous catalysts by starting from novel precursors to form N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, and subsequently synthesizing Pd(NHC)-PEPPSI type complexes. The structure of all synthesized ligands and complexes was confirmed using various spectroscopic techniques, with some compounds confirmed by X-ray. These complexes were found to be significantly active as catalysts in the C-C cross-coupling reaction.

Summary: N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are widely used compounds, with benzimidazole and imidazole derivatives being commonly used. Caffeine, which contains an imidazole unit, has been used as a carbene-type ligand before, but its use in a tridentate bis-NHC system has not been reported. The ligand can be synthesized easily, and metal complexes can be obtained through silver-salt metathesis. Platinum(II) and palladium(II) complexes were successfully isolated, and the crystal structure of the platinum complex was analyzed. Luminescence was observed in both the solid state and solution for the Pt(II) complex.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the transient formation of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) in zwitterionic imidazolium sulfonate surfactants in a water environment. The formation of NHCs was accelerated above the critical micelle concentration, due to increased local concentration of hydroxide or deuteroxide ions. The rate of NHC formation could be controlled by the anions of added salts, which also affected the selectivity of anion binding to the micelle surface. The NHCs generated at the micelle surface promoted the selective oxidation of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde, demonstrating the importance of micellar microenvironment in controlling reactivity and selectivity in aqueous media.

Summary: A series of air-stable NHC-Pd-PEPPSI-type complexes with unsymmetrical NHC ligand and a phenyl group in its backbone were successfully synthesized with high yields (82%-94%). The complexes were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, including H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, and HRMS. The crystal structure of the complexes was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, showing a slightly distorted square planar geometry around the metal centre. The complexes exhibited excellent catalytic activities in Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions under low catalyst loadings.

Summary: DFT computations were performed on Pd/Xiao-Phos-catalyzed asymmetric arylation of SPOs, presenting a modified mechanism involving tautomerization and arylation. Various tautomerization mechanisms were investigated, and the catalytic effect of base on this process was highlighted. Further computations revealed that oxidative addition is the enantioselectivity-determining step, with the difference in non-bonding interactions between Xiao-Phos and SPO parts considered as the origin of selectivity. This study provides deeper insights into the self-adaptive property of SadPhos ligands and offers valuable guidance for ligand design.

Summary: The synthesis and isolation of [Pd(NHC)(PhC equivalent to CPh)] complexes were reported, which are new 14-electron Pd(0)-complexes that serve as key synthons for known palladium(0) and palladium(II) species and allow access to unprecedented mixed NHC-phosphite palladium(0) complexes. These complexes are also capable of catalyzing the facile hydrosilylation of allenes. DFT calculations provided insights into the relatively weak interaction between the metal and the diphenylacetylene ligand, comparing it with other ligands with varying coordinating power, structure, and electronic properties.

Summary: Newly synthesized palladium allyl complexes exhibit lower antiproliferative activity, with similar anticancer activity in two ovarian cancer cell lines, suggesting a different mechanism of action compared to platinum-based anticancer drugs. Some compounds show lower cytotoxicity on normal cells and higher selectivity towards cancer cells. Comparing the IC50 values of NHC/PTA complexes and their trifluoromethyl congeners indicates similar antiproliferative activity against cancer cells, but the absence of the CF3 group decreases selectivity towards them.

Summary: In this study, a new heterogeneous catalyst Pd-NHC@Eu-BCI was synthesized by incorporating N-heterocyclic carbene-palladium active sites into a 2D coordination polymer based on a 1,3-bis(carboxymethyl)imidazolium ligand. The catalyst was thoroughly characterized using various analytical techniques. The Pd-NHC@Eu-BCI catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. It could be easily recovered from the reaction mixture and maintained its catalytic activity and structure even after five cycles.

Summary: Two new bis-carbene complexes derived from substituted 1,8-naphthalimides were synthesized, exhibiting trans orientation of the NHC ligands. The rotational barrier of one complex was experimentally estimated to be 20 kcal/mol at 298 K, with DFT calculations reproducing the experimental data accurately and suggesting electronic origin of the restricted rotation around the Pd-C carbene bond. The electron-donating properties of the reported system fall between unsaturated and saturated five-membered ring NHC ligands.

Summary: Two newly designed Pd(II) precatalysts were synthesized and used to efficiently convert unreactive aryl chlorides, benzyl chlorides, and benzoyl chlorides. The deprotonation of the precatalysts led to the dissociation of NHC, and the proposed Pd(II) species could be reduced to Pd(0) using ethoxide. The size of salt additive cations and the basicity of the base were found to influence the catalytic properties.

Summary: We synthesized a palladium complex (1a) with two different P-donors and proved its effectiveness as a Pd(ii) precatalyst for carbon-phosphorus bond formation. The complex exhibited efficient catalytic activity for the Hirao coupling reaction under environmentally benign conditions. Mechanistic studies were conducted to investigate the generation of plausible Pd(0) active species. The use of bulky di(1-adamantyl)phosphine oxide as a preligand and less bulky di-p-tolylphosphine oxide as the substrate in the coupling reaction was also demonstrated.

Summary: Amphoteric-redox phenalenyl radical (PLY) is a suitable candidate for designing ambipolar organic materials due to its perfect local nonbonding character in the singly occupied nonbonding molecular orbital (NBMO) and small internal reorganization energy (lambda). Studying the position effect of aza groups on lambda in PLY derivatives shows that bond angle alterations are the main contributors to lambda, with most aza-PLYs having lambdas smaller than 100 meV. Two pi-extended PLY derivatives with small lambda are recommended for fabricating air-stable ambipolar OFET based on adiabatic ionization potential and electron affinity.
