Summary: This study analyzed data from the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry and found that the initiation of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in children and young adults has been happening earlier over time. However, earlier initiation of KRT did not affect patient survival. Clinical practice variation played a significant role in determining the timing of KRT initiation.

Summary: The study compared the clinical features and survival rates of osteosarcoma in adolescents and young adults (AYA) with other age groups. It found that AYA had the highest male-to-female ratio, with most tumors located in extremities. The treatment mainly consisted of local treatment and systemic chemotherapy, and the 5-year overall survival rate of AYA was closer to that of children.

Summary: The incidence and mortality rates of cancers in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in Europe and EU member states vary widely, with the highest mortality seen in Eastern EU countries. Breast, thyroid, and testicular cancers are the most common types across countries, followed by melanoma of skin and cervical cancer. Differences in cancer incidence rates may be due to various risk factors, screening implementation or uptake, and overdiagnosis. Disparities in AYA cancer mortality might be attributed to differences in early-stage diagnoses, public education and awareness of cancer symptoms, and access to treatment. It is crucial to establish AYA-specialised services and preventive initiatives to address the future healthcare needs and mitigate the increasing burden.

Summary: Defining immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in two age groups, children and adults, does not consider the specific clinical features and needs of adolescents and young adults (AYAS). This study reveals that refractory ITP is uncommon in AYAS, but AYAS with refractory ITP display a high disease burden at all time points.

Summary: The impact of nonbiological factors on survival of adolescents and young adults with lymphoma in the US is significant. Factors such as insurance status, race, and income level play a role in mortality risk. Improving access and quality of healthcare services can increase survival chances for these patients.

Summary: This study found that adolescents/young adults who underwent bariatric surgery in France had a higher rate of hospitalization for self-harm during the three-year follow-up period compared to control groups. Hospitalization for self-harm was associated with prior psychiatric disorders and self-harm, but not directly with bariatric surgery.

Summary: Immunotherapy has revolutionized the treatment of various cancers, leading to long-term survival for many patients with metastatic disease. However, the impact of these therapies on young cancer patients remains poorly understood, with questions surrounding fertility and pregnancy interactions still unanswered.

Summary: The study investigated systemic molecular profiles of endometriosis in adolescents and young adults, identifying significant enrichment of proteins related to angiogenesis and cell migration pathways in endometriosis cases. Increased activation of these pathways was observed in endometriosis cases compared to controls. Results suggest the need for further validation and mechanistic studies to better understand the pathophysiological characteristics of this understudied patient population.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the language abilities of autistic adolescents and young adults with language impairment. The results showed that all participants met the criteria for language impairment, with overall language abilities remaining in the impaired range, while other abilities varied. These findings contribute to our understanding of the linguistic strengths and variability in language skills of autistic young adults.

Summary: Assessment of GFR is crucial for clinical practice, public health, and research, as it helps in diagnosing and managing chronic kidney disease. While GFR estimates based on creatinine levels are commonly used and reasonably accurate, confirmatory tests may be needed for more precise evaluation. Various confirmatory tests, such as cystatin C-based equations or urinary clearance of exogenous markers, are available for a more accurate assessment of GFR.

Summary: The study aimed to compare 24-hour glycemic levels between obese pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance and non-obese pregnant women. The results showed that obesity in pregnancy was associated with higher glycemic levels even in the presence of normal glucose tolerance test findings. Obese pregnant women had significantly higher blood sugar levels at various time points compared to non-obese pregnant women.

Summary: The Cockcroft-Gault creatinine-based equation is still commonly used for estimating glomerular filtration rate for drug dosage adjustment, but it has been found to perform worse than more recent equations in terms of bias, imprecision and accuracy. Specifically, the CG equation showed poor ability to estimate GFR overall and in analyses stratified for mGFR, age, and BMI, as well as inferior classification of patients in mGFR staging compared to newer equations.
