Summary: This study found that a GLUT2-dependent glucose-sensing mechanism in GFAP-positive tanycytes is crucial for the normal regulation of feeding behavior. Inactivation of GLUT2 in GFAP-positive tanycytes led to delayed meal initiation and decreased food intake after fasting. The loss of glucose sensing also resulted in an increase in c-Fos-positive cells in the ventromedial nucleus and deregulation of Pomc expression in the fasting-to-refeeding transition.

Effects of Short-term Fasting on Ghrelin/GH/IGF-1 Axis in Healthy Humans:The Role of Ghrelin in the Thrifty Phenotype

Summary: This study investigates the role of ghrelin, GH, and IGF-1 in the fasting-induced decrease in 24-hour energy expenditure (24hEE). The results show that fasting leads to an increase in GH, while ghrelin and IGF-1 remain unchanged. The increase in ghrelin after fasting is associated with a decrease in 24hEE, suggesting that ghrelin may serve as a novel biomarker of increased energy efficiency in the thrifty phenotype.

Summary: Diet plays a profound role in physiological processes, with over-nutrition increasing disease risk while caloric restriction and fasting have beneficial effects. However, the underlying biology connecting diet and health is still unclear. In this study, fasting was found to induce a switch in leukocyte migration, prolonging monocyte lifespan and altering susceptibility to disease in mice. This effect was mediated by the release of corticosterone through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which enhanced the CXCR4 chemokine receptor. These findings highlight the importance of diet, particularly its temporal dynamics, in modulating monocyte lifespan and response to external stressors.
