Summary: This study evaluated the anti-aging effect of Erzhi Wan (EZW) and investigated the mechanisms associated with cellular metabolomics and lipidomics. The results showed that EZW exhibited a protective effect on D-gal-induced senescent kidney cells by mainly regulating amino acid metabolism, energy metabolism, and phospholipid biosynthesis pathways.

Summary: Preeclampsia, a common severe complication in pregnancy, is a placental source disease with unknown mechanisms. This study used metabolomic and lipidomic analysis to identify characteristic placental metabolites in preeclampsia. The perturbations in metabolism were primarily associated with glycerophospholipid and glutathione metabolism. Findings suggest that metabolomics and lipidomics could provide valuable insights into the understanding and molecular mechanisms of preeclampsia.

Summary: This study investigated how malignant ascites in ovarian cancer patients influences tumor metabolism and recurrence, finding that alkaline malignant ascites can facilitate ovarian cancer progression. Deep ascites phenotyping through metabolomics and cytokine investigations allows for a refined stratification of patients, contributing to the understanding of ascites pathology in ovarian cancer.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the metabolic network of glioma cells after exposure to anlotinib and to identify its anti-glioma mechanism from the perspective of metabolic reprogramming. The results showed that anlotinib exerted a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on glioma cells and modulated metabolic pathways including amino acid metabolism, energy metabolism, ceramide metabolism, and glycerophospholipid metabolism. Overall, anlotinib has an effective treatment against the development and progression of glioma, and further research into the mechanisms underlying the metabolic changes is expected to provide new strategies for treating glioma.

Summary: Mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomic and lipidomic approaches are widely used in biomedical research. A sample extraction method called Multi-ABLE has been developed for concurrent generation of proteomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic data. However, there is a lack of a unified bioinformatics pipeline for processing and analysis of these data. A new R pipeline called MultiABLER is presented here as a unified and simple upstream processing and analysis pipeline for metabolomics and lipidomics datasets.

Summary: The prevalence of diabetes type 1 (T1D) is increasing worldwide. This study aimed to find new biomarkers of T1D in red blood cells (RBCs), which have not been explored before. The metabolomic and lipidomic profiles of RBCs from T1D patients and healthy controls were analyzed using NMR spectroscopy. Significant changes were observed in amino acids, organic acids, creatine, phosphocreatine, lipid length, and choline derivatives. These changes indicate alterations in glycolysis, BCAA metabolism, and phospholipid metabolism. The study concluded that the metabolic and lipidomic profile of RBCs can be used as biomarker candidates for the earlier diagnosis and monitoring of T1D patients.

Summary: The poor availability of oxygen and nutrients in malignant tumors drives the activation of various molecular responses and metabolic reprogramming in cancer cells. Understanding the metabolic changes occurring during hypoxia and reoxygenation is crucial for improving therapy efficacy. In this study, alterations in mitochondrial metabolism, redox status, lipid classes, and structural characteristics of lipids were observed during hypoxia and reoxygenation.

Summary: The vacuum jacketed column (VJC) technology showed improved resolution, faster analysis, and better peak intensity in lipidomic analysis of plasma extracts compared to traditional UHPLC systems. It increased peak capacity by 66%, reduced peak tailing by up to 34%, and detected 30% more lipids. Additionally, the VJC system resulted in a 2-fold increase in peak intensity and a 22% increase in the number of lipids identified.

Summary: This study investigated the application of hybrid surface technology (HST) on the metal surfaces of an ACQUITYTM UPLCTM system and column to mitigate the issues of chelation, poor peak shape, and analyte loss caused by acidic phospholipids. The results showed significant improvements in sensitivity, recovery, and peak shape when using HST for the analysis of various phospholipids. The HST system and column particularly improved chromatographic performance at low analyte concentrations. The application of HST also led to reduced peak tailing, narrower peak widths, and increased signal intensities. Similar improvements in data quality were observed when analyzing chicken egg phosphatidic acid (PA) and brain porcine phosphatidylserine (PS) extracts.
