Predictors of long-term mortality in octogenarian veterans following inguinal hernia repair

S. Huerta, T. Phung, N. Tran, H. Lanier, T. Pham

Summary: This study examined long-term mortality and predictors following elective inguinal hernia repair in veteran octogenarians. Results showed that renal disease and use of general anesthesia were independent predictors of mortality, suggesting that general anesthesia should be avoided whenever possible.

The Veteran Affair Surgical Quality Improvement Program Calculator is a Poor Predictor of Morbidity and Mortality in Octogenarian and Nonagenarian Veterans Undergoing Major Lower Extremity Amputations

Sergio Huerta, Heather Lanier, Shirling Tsai, Thai Pham, Senthil Sambandam

Summary: The VASQIP risk calculator showed poor accuracy in predicting short-term outcomes for octogenarians and nonagenarians undergoing major LEA. Most octogenarian and nonagenarian veterans died within 1 year, with nonagenarians having a mean survival of less than 3 months after LEA. The decision for major LEA in octogenarian and nonagenarian veterans should involve an informed discussion with the patient and family.

Syed M. M. A. Bokhari, Senthil Sambandam, Shirling Tsai, Vishaal S. Nathan, Tejas Senthil, Heather Lanier, Sergio Huerta

Summary: This study investigated the impact of obesity on morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing above knee amputation. The results showed that obese patients had higher rates of blood loss anemia, superficial surgical site infection, and acute kidney injury. They also had higher mortality rates, longer hospital stays, and higher medical costs.
