Background: Several studies have shown a positive effect of fructo-oligosaccharides on calcium absorption and retention in animals and humans. Effects of levels of these pre-biotics that can be functionally incorporated into manufactured foods, have not been studied in controlled feeding studies. Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of 9 g/d of fructo-oligosaccharides as part of a controlled diet on calcium absorption and retention in adolescent girls. Design: Fourteen healthy adolescent girls aged 11-13 y were studied in a metabolic setting for two 3-week periods separated by a 2-week washout period. In a randomized, double-blinded, crossover design, the teens received a diet containing either 9 g/d oligofructose-enriched inulin in a calcium-fortified cereal or the control cereal with no inulin. Both diets contained similar to 1500 mg calcium daily. Calcium retention was determined on the third week of each period. On day 14 of the diet period, fractional calcium absorption was determined from the enrichment of Ca-44 in 4-day urine collections. Results: Calcium absorption (67 +/- 3 vs. 66 +/- 3%) and retention (409 +/- 394 vs. 464 +/- 241 mg/d) were not significantly different when diets contained 9 g/d oligofructose-enriched inulin or not in a calcium-fortified cereal. Conclusions: Daily consumption of cereal containing a combination of short- and long-chain fructooligosaccharides as part of a controlled diet did not benefit calcium absorption or retention in adolescent girls. Lack of response to the prebiotic in this cohort may relate to their already high calcium absorption efficiency.

Nondestructive Prediction of Isoflavones and Oligosaccharides in Intact Soybean Seed Using Fourier Transform Near-Infrared (FT-NIR) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectroscopic Techniques

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using FT-NIR and FT-IR to predict the content of isoflavones and oligosaccharides in soybean samples. The results show that acceptable prediction models can be developed using FT-NIR, and these models perform better than the models based on FT-IR data. The study also demonstrates the possibility of predicting individual types of components using FT-NIR.

Spatial assessment of potential areas at risk from blueberry gall midge distribution in South Korea

Dae-hyeon Byeon, Wang-Hee Lee

Summary: This study evaluated the climatic suitability of Dasineura oxycoccana and assessed the risk it poses to blueberry cultivation areas in South Korea. The results indicated that the southern coast is currently the most suitable region for the occurrence of D. oxycoccana, and its population is expected to increase inland due to climate change. Jeju and the southern coast are currently at risk, and by 2040 and 2060, the risk is projected to spread to southern Gyeonggi-do and Ganwon-do, respectively. This study provides a precautionary evaluation for monitoring and controlling the pest.

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness of different insect sampling methods in riparian areas and found variations between different plant communities and insect orders. The similarities between terrestrial insect communities were relatively high, even across different years. The optimal sampling size for obtaining approximately 80% of total species was estimated for each survey site.

Summary: In this study, species distribution models were used to predict the potential distribution of the spongy moth and identify areas at risk. The results showed that the number of suitable areas for the pest would decrease under climate change, providing important data for predicting areas in need of intensive control and monitoring in advance.

Spatial Evaluation of Machine Learning-Based Species Distribution Models for Prediction of Invasive Ant Species Distribution

Wang-Hee Lee, Jae-Woo Song, Sun-Hee Yoon, Jae-Min Jung

Summary: This study developed machine learning-based species distribution models to predict the potential distribution of two invasive ant species globally under current and future climates. The models showed that the potential distribution of Solenopsis invicta would expand with climate change, while it would not significantly change for Anoplolepis gracilipes. The different performance and projection size of the models suggest that optimal model selection is necessary to minimize modeling uncertainty.

Spatial analysis of the occurrence of the western conifer seed bug Leptoglossus occidentalis (Heteroptera: Coreidae) in Europe based on multiple environmental variables

Jae-Min Jung, Dae-Hyeon Byeon, Dong-Hyeon Lee, Youngwoo Nam, Sunghoon Jung, Wang-Hee Lee

Summary: In this study, the potential distribution of the western conifer seed bug (WCSB) was projected using CLIMEX modeling and random forest analysis. Land cover was found to be the most important variable for classifying the presence/pseudo-absence of WCSB, with an accuracy of 77.1%. The WCSB was predicted to have higher climatic suitability in Southern Europe compared to Western Europe, and primarily occur near coniferous forests. The combination of CLIMEX and random forest analysis can improve the reliability of predictions.
