Associations of anger, vital exhaustion, anti-depressant use, and poor social ties with incident atrial fibrillation: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study

Parveen K. Garg, J'Neka S. Claxton, Elsayed Z. Soliman, Lin Y. Chen, Tene T. Lewis, Thomas Mosley, Alvaro Alonso

Summary: The study found that vital exhaustion and anti-depressant use are associated with incident atrial fibrillation, while anger and poor social ties are not significantly related to the development of atrial fibrillation.

Fragmented sinoatrial dynamics in the prediction of atrial fibrillation: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

Madalena D. Costa, Susan Redline, Elsayed Z. Soliman, Ary L. Goldberger, Susan R. Heckbert

Summary: Heart rate fragmentation (HRF), a marker of anomalous sinoatrial dynamics, is an independent predictor of atrial fibrillation (AF), adding value to existing predictive models and supporting the concept of electrodynamical remodeling in the prediction of AF.

Periodontal Disease, Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke

Souvik Sen, Kolby Redd, Tushar Trivedi, Kevin Moss, Alvaro Alonso, Elsayed Z. Soliman, Jared W. Magnani, Lin Y. Chen, Rebecca F. Gottesman, Wayne Rosamond, James Beck, Stephen Offenbacher

Summary: Periodontal disease is associated with atrial fibrillation, which may explain the increased stroke risk. Regular dental care users have a lower risk of incident atrial fibrillation compared to episodic users.

Change in Cardiac Biomarkers and Risk of Incident Heart Failure and Atrial Fibrillation in CKD: The Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study

Nisha Bansal, Leila R. Zelnick, Elsayed Z. Soliman, Amanda Anderson, Robert Christenson, Christopher DeFilippi, Rajat Deo, Harold Feldman, Jiang He, Bonnie Ky, John Kusek, James Lash, Stephen Seliger, Tariq Shafi, Myles Wolf, Alan S. Go, Michael G. Shlipak

Summary: In chronic kidney disease (CKD), increases in NT-proBNP were significantly associated with greater risk of incident HF and AF, and increases in sST2 were associated with HF. Further studies should investigate whether these markers of subclinical cardiovascular disease can be modified to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in CKD.

Association of T-wave abnormalities with major cardiovascular events in diabetes: the ACCORD trial

Steven J. Mould, Elsayed Z. Soliman, Alain G. Bertoni, Prashant D. Bhave, Joseph Yeboah, Matthew J. Singleton

Summary: T-wave abnormalities are associated with increased risk of clinical cardiovascular events and mortality in individuals with diabetes, especially in those with prevalent cardiovascular disease. Adding TWA to risk assessment may improve risk prediction, particularly in those with existing CVD.

The utility of silent myocardial infarction on electrocardiogram as an ASCVD risk enhancer for primary prevention: The multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis

Matthew J. Singleton, Charles A. German, Elsayed Z. Soliman, Gregory L. Burke, Joseph Yeboah

Summary: The study evaluated the utility of SMI on ECG as a risk enhancer in intermediate-risk participants and found that while SMI was associated with an increased risk of incident ASCVD events, adding it to the PCE did not improve discrimination significantly. This suggests that SMI may not be very useful as an ASCVD risk enhancer.

Two-Week Burden of Arrhythmias across CKD Severity in a Large Community-Based Cohort: The ARIC Study

Esther D. Kim, Elsayed Z. Soliman, Josef Coresh, Kunihiro Matsushita, Lin Yee Chen

Summary: The study found a higher prevalence of atrial fibrillation and nonsustained ventricular tachycardia among older adults with more severe CKD. Albuminuria was associated with a higher prevalence of atrial fibrillation and nonsustained ventricular tachycardia, while eGFR was associated with the frequency of atrioventricular block.

Associations of Left Atrial Function and Structure With Supraventricular Ectopy: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

Susan R. Heckbert, Paul N. Jensen, Thomas R. Austin, Lin Yee Chen, Wendy S. Post, Bharath Ambale Venkatesh, Elsayed Z. Soliman, James S. Floyd, Nona Sotoodehnia, Richard A. Kronmal, Joao A. C. Lima

Summary: This study found that high levels of supraventricular ectopy were associated with impaired left atrial function and enlargement. Monitoring of supraventricular ectopy may provide insights into atrial myopathy.

Exposure to secondhand smoke is associated with increased left ventricular mass

Travis M. Skipina, Bharathi Upadhya, Elsayed Z. Soliman

Summary: Chronic hypertension is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy, and recent evidence suggests that secondhand smoke exposure is also related to chronic hypertension. This study found that exposure to secondhand smoke is associated with increased left ventricular mass index among non-smokers, with a dose-response relationship between level of exposure and left ventricular mass index. These results were consistent across different subgroups, reinforcing the harmful effects of passive smoking on the cardiovascular system.

Left Atrial Remodeling and Stroke in Patients With Sinus Rhythm and Normal Ejection Fraction: ARIC-NCS

Summary: The study found that age-related left atrial structural and functional abnormalities are associated with subclinical cerebral infarcts (SCIs) and stroke in elderly patients. The deterioration of LA global longitudinal strain and E/e' divided by LA global longitudinal strain is related to age increment and increased odds of SCIs and stroke.

Naga Venkata K. Pothineni, Elsayed Z. Soliman, Mary Cushman, George Howard, Virginia J. Howard, Scott E. Kasner, Suzanne Judd, J. David Rhodes, Francis E. Marchlinski, Rajat Deo

Summary: This study examined the feasibility of telephone guided, mail-in ambulatory long-term cardiac rhythm monitoring in Black and White stroke survivors, and found a high prevalence of arrhythmias among those who completed monitoring.

Relationship between premature ventricular complexes and stroke mortality in the general population

Muhammad Imtiaz Ahmad, Mai Z. Soliman, Elsayed Z. Soliman

Summary: The presence of premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) is associated with an increased risk of stroke mortality, particularly in individuals with coronary heart disease (CHD). Prospective studies are needed to investigate whether improved hospital care or modification of PVCs could improve outcomes.
