Summary: Solid supported or ligand capped gold nanomaterials (AuNMs) have emerged as versatile and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for a broad variety of conversions in the ongoing catalytic 'gold rush'. AuNMs, existing at the border of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, have the potential to merge high catalytic activity with significant substrate selectivity. This work summarizes well-defined catalytically active NHC capped AuNMs, including spherical nanoparticles and atom-precise nanoclusters, as well as the important NHC design choices towards activity and (stereo-)selectivity enhancements.

Summary: The immobilization of tungsten-based catalysts inside ordered mesoporous silica results in enhanced macrocyclization and Z-selectivity, allowing high substrate concentrations. Smaller mesopores exhibit a stronger confinement effect. The two supported catalysts show different selectivities, which can be rationalized by their structures.

Summary: Despite their excellent selectivities and activities, Mo- and W-based catalysts for olefin metathesis have not been widely used due to their air sensitivity. The synthesized cationic-at-metal molybdenum and tungsten imido alkylidene NHC nitrile complexes are stable in air and can catalyze olefin metathesis reactions without prior activation. The presence of a nitrile ligand is crucial for their stability, while variations in imido and anionic ligands affect reactivities and stability.

Summary: By using (i)Pr(2)Im as a Lewis base ligand, beta-H elimination reactions in propylene polymerization were suppressed, resulting in high molecular weight polypropylene and block copolymers. DFT calculations showed that the delocalized electrons in (i)Pr(2)Im could decrease the electro positivity of active sites, providing a convenient strategy for tuning their electronic properties.

Summary: A series of cationic tungsten oxo alkylidene N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The correlation between the C-13 NMR chemical shifts of alkylidene C atoms and the DFT calculated chemical shifts was studied, revealing a good correlation and strong correlation with the rate of ring-closing metathesis. Analysis of catalyst geometries and magnetic shielding tensors allowed for assigning different structures to different levels of shielded alkylidene C atoms and corresponding reaction rates.

Summary: A catalytic system for the direct beta-alkylation of secondary alcohol with primary alcohol has been studied, using cationic Ru(II)(eta(6)-p-cymene) complexes with thioether-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligands as catalysts. The results show that modifications in the ligand moiety have a strong effect on both selectivity and reactivity. Imidazole-based complex 1c exhibited the best catalytic activity and highest selectivity for the beta-alcohol, with 98:2 selectivity. Moderate yields of beta-alkylated secondary alcohols have been obtained with complete conversion and high selectivity.

Summary: This study discusses the design principles and computational investigation of new organometallic platforms containing stable manganese-manganese bonds. The analysis focuses on the metal-carbene interaction and auxiliary coordination to generate short metal-metal bonds, closed-shell singlet multiplicities, and positive singlet-triplet energy gaps. The research identifies two classes of viable synthetic targets with thoroughly investigated electrostructural properties.
