Summary: A green and environmentally friendly synthetic approach has been developed for the preparation of racemic or enantioenriched 3,4,6-trisubstituted α-pyrones through a cheap K2CO3-catalyzed C(CO)-C bond insertion reaction of ketenimines with 1,3-diketones. The synthetic utility of this methodology was demonstrated by the broad substrate scope and the concise synthesis of analogues of pharmaceutically active compounds. Furthermore, the study also revealed the potential of extended conjugated α-pyrones for optoelectronic applications in organic light-emitting diodes.

Summary: We have discovered that N-heterocyclic nitreniums (NHNs) can act as efficient catalysts for charge transfer complex without the need for any additives. The NHN cation acts as an electron acceptor, while the counter-ion I- serves as an electron donor, enabling the synthesis of diverse trisubstituted alkenes and heterocycles.

Summary: In this study, the first general C(sp(2))-C(sp(2)) reductive cross-coupling reaction of diverse triarylphosphines with a wide range of aryl halides is reported using palladium/nickel co-catalysis. This protocol provides a unique route for the synthesis of biaryl compounds through the activation of inert C(Ar)-P bonds. Mechanistic studies have shown that the formation of phosphonium salts in situ plays a key role in the catalytic cycle.

Summary: Amorphous materials have promising applications in irradiation environments, but the mechanisms behind the changes in their mechanical properties caused by irradiation are not well understood. In this study, Zr-Si amorphous films were sputtered and irradiated with helium ions to investigate the microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior changes. The results showed that the bonding status and free volume in the amorphous material changed after irradiation, leading to an increase in elastic modulus and improved plasticity.

Summary: We disclose that ammonium salts can be readily activated using iridium photoredox catalysis to form radicals, and demonstrate the synthetic utility of this activation with hydrodeamination reactions and radical couplings. Cyclic voltammetry was used to rationalize the reactivity observed for the activation of these ammonium salts.

Summary: An efficient direct nucleophilic addition reaction of C(sp2)-H bonds to aldehydes catalyzed by a dimeric manganese has been developed. This reaction has a broad range of substrates, and high yields were also obtained with inert aliphatic aldehydes as substrates. A dimeric Mn2(CO)8Br2 was proven to be a more efficient catalyst precursor than the monomeric Mn(CO)5Br.

Summary: Platinum(II) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbenes based on guanosine and caffeine were synthesized by unassisted C-H oxidative addition, leading to the corresponding trans-hydride complexes. Platinum guanosine derivatives with triflate or bromide were also synthesized for structure-activity correlation. The hydride compounds showed high antiproliferative activity against all tested cell lines and changing the counterion had no significant effect. Increasing the bulkiness at N7 maintained the antiproliferative activity while decreasing toxicity for non-cancer cells.

Summary: In this study, an efficient strategy has been developed to catalyze the complete cleavage of carbon-carbon (C-C) bonds in mixed polyolefin plastics using non-noble metal catalysts under mild conditions. The reaction pathway investigation reveals the stepwise catalytic cleavage of C-C bonds in polypropylene, leading to the production of natural gas.

Summary: Radical N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysis has made significant progress in recent years, allowing for various impressive transformations. However, prefunctionalized substrates with a redox functionality have always been required. Therefore, direct functionalization of aliphatic C-H bonds in simple substrates has remained a challenge. The recent successful application of the hydrogen transfer atom (HAT) strategy in radical NHC catalysis has changed this situation. This concept paper discusses the combination of NHC catalysis with a classical intramolecular 1,5-HAT process, and highlights the unprecedented application of intermolecular HAT in radical NHC catalysis as a novel catalysis model with great synthetic potential.

Summary: An electrochemical activation method for galactose oxidase (GOase) was developed to replace the expensive horseradish peroxidase activator in large-scale pharmaceutical processes. The study showed that the electron-transfer rates between GOase and various mediators depend on both the redox potential of the mediator and the pH. The electrochemical GOase activation method was successfully applied to the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol derivatives and other compounds, including a key step in the biocatalytic cascade for the HIV therapeutic islatravir.

Summary: A fluorescent polycatenated hydrogen-bonded organic framework (MEP-HOF) was developed using a C-3-symmetric rigid macrocycle as the exclusive building block. The tri-carboxylated macrocycles form supramolecular embraced pairs stabilized by intermolecular non-covalent interactions, further assembling into an interwoven three-dimensional H-bond network with a degree of catenation of seven. The MEP-HOF can be easily prepared and regenerated, and its fluorescent properties make it a sensitive sensor for nitrobenzene detection in water, with a detection limit of 61.8 +/- 2.2 ppb.

Summary: Earth-abundant Mn(iii) complexes can be used as small molecule alternatives to expensive horseradish peroxidase (HRP) for activating galactose oxidase (GOase), with low loadings and good efficacy. While an induction period is observed with Mn(OAc)(3) activation, it can be eliminated by using other Mn(iii) sources, resulting in higher product conversions.
