Summary: In this study, an asymmetric dearomative tandem annulation between 3-nitroindoles and 7-oxo-5-heptenals was described. The cascade reactions proceeded smoothly using modularly designed organocatalysts self-assembled from cinchona-squaramide and d-proline. As a result, a collection of enantioenriched indoline-fused bicyclo[2.2.2]octanes featuring six vicinal stereocenters were smoothly obtained in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee). This protocol provides an economical and practical approach for the asymmetric synthesis of structurally complex indolines.

Summary: Bicyclo[2.2.2]octane derivatives with a quaternary bridgehead carbon were synthesized in nearly optically pure form with excellent diastereoselectivity using diphenylprolinol silyl ether mediated domino Michael/Michael reaction of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde and cyclohex-2-en-1-one containing an electron-withdrawing group at the 3-position. Carbonitrile, alkoxycarbonyl, and sulfonyl substituents proved to be effective electron-withdrawing groups at the 3-position of cyclohex-2-en-1-one.

Summary: In this study, gas-phase preparation, isolation, and reactivity of a series of organolanthanides with the Ln-CH3 bond were reported. These complexes were formed by decarboxylating anionic lanthanide acetates. The hydrolysis rate of Ln-CH3 bonds decreases from La-III-CH3 to Lu-III-CH3, with smaller Ln and increased steric crowding stabilizing the harder Ln-CH3 bond against hydrolysis.

Summary: This study introduces a new method to improve the performance of all-small-molecule organic solar systems through ternary strategies, incorporating a small amount of the IDIC acceptor into a ZR1-Cl : IDIC-4Cl based binary system. Results show that the good miscibility enabled by two structurally similar acceptors can enhance short circuit current, open circuit voltage, and fill factor, thereby increasing power conversion efficiency.

Summary: A benzo[b] naphtho[1,2-d]thiophene-S,S-dioxide (NSO) electron-deficient acceptor was synthesized to lower the electron-withdrawing ability. The copolymers PPF-NSs and PPF-NSOs were studied, and it was found that intermolecular energy transfer was the main mechanism of photoluminescence for PPF-NSs, while intramolecular charge transfer played the main role for PPF-NSOs. PPF-NSOs showed superior blue emission at a low acceptor concentration, while the energy transfer-based copolymer PPF-NS1 also achieved satisfactory performance.

Summary: In recent years, PDI-based supramolecular photocatalysts have attracted significant attention. The charge localization effects hinder the charge transfer in PDI, resulting in a high recombination rate and limited activity. This study developed three heteroatom bay-annulated perylene diimide supramolecule photocatalysts (N-APDI, S-APDI, and Se-APDI) for photocatalytic H2 evolution. Under visible-light irradiation, heteroatom-annulated PDI supramolecules exhibited better H2 evolution rate than non-heteroatom APDI, with N-APDI showing the highest hydrogen production rate of 61.49 mmol g-1 h-1 and an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 5.90% at 420 nm. The improved photocatalytic activity of heteroatom-annulated PDI supramolecules can be attributed to stronger molecular dipole, which enhances the internal electric field magnitude and promotes charge separation and migration. Furthermore, heteroatom annulation can act as a more beneficial active site to promote HER activity. This work provides a new strategy for the development of supramolecular photocatalysts.

Summary: In this study, a high-performance fluorescence probe H4 based on intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism was developed. H4 exhibited outstanding sensitivity, short response time, low hemolysis effect, and excellent photo stability. It showed a good linear relationship in the pH range of 2.2-7.4 and could be used for real-time detection of H+ in food samples. The probe also demonstrated favorable behavior for detecting acid pH changes in living onion tissues and zebrafish.

Summary: In this study, ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) were constructed using Y6 and BTP-eC9 blends as acceptors and D18-Cl as a donor, leading to improved power conversion efficiency (PCE). BTP-eC9, compared to Y6, exhibited a red-shifted absorption peak, resulting in the optimized ternary PSCs having the highest short-circuit current density (JSC). Additionally, BTP-eC9 showed a shallower LUMO level and played a role in broadening the energy level difference, contributing to a higher open-circuit voltage (V-OC) in the ternary PSCs. Furthermore, the blend of Y6 and BTP-eC9 as acceptors enhanced the crystallinity and improved the surface and bulk morphology of the ternary films, leading to enhanced charge carrier mobility and suppressed charge carrier recombination.

Summary: The electron transfer in a donor-acceptor photovoltaic system composed of benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b':6,5-b'']-trithiophene as donor and C70 fullerene as acceptor was experimentally investigated. It was found that the use of dispersion-corrected exchange-correlation functional is essential for realistically describing the process.

These emitters can utilize triplet excitons through HLCT excited states, resulting in improved electroluminescence efficiency.

Summary: By molecular design and tuning of excited-state dynamics, we achieved dual fluorescence from two different excited states in three out of four regioisomers of benzo[g]coumarins (BgCoum) in solvents with intermediate polarity. Computational analysis showed that the orientation of esters on the pyrone ring led to the observed dual fluorescence. This study highlights the importance of seemingly inconsequential substituents, such as esters on the pyrone coumarin rings, for molecular photonics, materials engineering, and solar-energy science.

Summary: Light-induced charge separation plays a crucial role in solar harvesting technologies, and the internal reorganization energy has a profound impact on charge transfer rates. Experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate that reducing the reorganization energy can greatly increase charge transfer rates, even more significantly than the driving force. This suggests that careful design of redox mediators to minimize reorganization energy is a promising approach to enhance the efficiency of quantum dot applications.

Summary: Sclerolinum annulatus n. sp. is a newly described species of Siboglinidae found in the Haima cold seep of the South China Sea. It is morphologically distinct with transverse rings and elongated plaques on both sides of the dorsal furrow. Genetic analysis supports its placement in the genus Sclerolinum with a close relationship to an undescribed siboglinid from Japan.

Summary: We used ancient DNA extraction methods to confirm the genetic identity of a polychaete species that has been a matter of debate since its description. Our results revealed a high genetic match with a cryptic seep species. Additionally, we found that chemosynthesis-based polychaetes in Arctic seeps are not seep specialists and may have a relatively generalist habitat. Our findings suggest that Arctic chemosymbiotic animals seasonally vary their reliance on chemosynthetic partners due to the extreme seasonality of the Arctic.
