Summary: Post-acne scarring is a common consequence of acne vulgaris with no universal cure. Recent advances in physically addressing acne scars have been made, but research on their psychosocial impacts is still lacking. A comprehensive PubMed search highlights known sources of mental distress caused by post-acne scarring and suggests that it requires a unique clinical approach separate from that used for active acne.

Summary: This study compared the psychosocial outcomes of adult childhood cancer survivors with the general population and identified sociodemographic and medical risk factors. The results showed that childhood cancer survivors had similar self-esteem and anxiety levels, but were less depressed. However, their health-related quality of life was poorer, except for bodily pain. Factors such as female sex, lower education level, lack of relationship, and unemployment were negatively associated with most psychosocial outcomes. Few medical characteristics were found to be related to psychosocial outcomes, except for central nervous system tumor diagnosis. Future research should investigate additional factors such as coping, social support, and physical late effects in explaining the psychosocial functioning of cancer survivors.

Summary: This study explored the relationships between body image, personal investment, and psychosocial outcomes in individuals with amputations and diabetes using White's theoretical model. The results showed that body image disturbance mediated the relationship between personal investment and psychosocial outcomes, as well as between self-ideal discrepancy and psychosocial outcomes. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing body image in psychological interventions for individuals with health conditions.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of psychosocial factors on medical students' quality of life. The results showed that higher levels of depression and Internet addiction were associated with lower scores in all domains of quality of life, while higher levels of self-esteem and social support were associated with higher scores. Certain sociodemographic factors also had significant effects on specific domains of quality of life. Educational strategies that focus on strengthening self-esteem and social support, as well as preventing depression and Internet addiction, may contribute to improving medical students' quality of life.

Summary: This systematic review examined resilience in bipolar disorder (BD) and its relationships with demographic, psychopathology, illness features, and psychosocial functioning. The findings suggested that higher resilience in BD was associated with specific psychopathology, clinical features, social factors, and psychosocial functioning. Therefore, enhancing resilience levels should be emphasized in the treatment of BD.

Summary: Self-esteem is an important factor affecting the quality of life (QoL) for cancer patients undergoing surgical procedures for bodily deformities. However, little data exists on which aspects of self-esteem are most closely associated with QoL. This article presents two studies aimed at addressing this gap. Study 1 focuses on changes in global self-esteem and QoL in oral cancer patients (n = 35) treated surgically, while Study 2 examines changes in explicit and implicit self-esteem and QoL in women with breast cancer undergoing mastectomy (n = 96). Both studies used the EORTC QLQ-C30 and Rosenberg's SES questionnaires, with Study 2 also including the Implicit Association Test (IAT). Results showed that patients experienced a decline in global QoL and self-esteem after surgery. Study 1 revealed that patients with higher initial self-esteem experienced a greater decrease in self-esteem and QoL compared to those with lower initial self-esteem. In Study 2, women with fragile self-esteem exhibited the largest decreases in various dimensions of QoL and explicit self-esteem. Conversely, women with high explicit and implicit self-esteem had the best QoL after mastectomy. These findings highlight the need for special psycho-oncological care for cancer patients with high, fragile self-esteem.

Summary: Acne vulgaris is a common reason for patients to seek care from dermatologists in the US, but referring providers may be hesitant to prescribe acne treatments or certain medications. A study analyzed prescription rates for acne therapies from 1993 to 2016 and found that younger patients and privately insured patients were more likely to receive prescription treatments. Dermatologists were more likely to recommend prescription medications compared to family medicine and pediatric providers. Oral minocycline and oral doxycycline were the most commonly prescribed antibiotics, while benzoyl peroxide was the most utilized and recommended over-the-counter drug for acne.

Summary: This article reviews the efficacy and safety of 1% tapinarof cream for plaque psoriasis. The results of two 12-week phase III clinical trials showed that around 35.4% to 40.2% of patients achieved clear or almost clear disease severity at week 12. In the 40-week, open-label extension trial, 40.9% of patients achieved a Physician's Global Assessment (PGA) score of 0 at least once. Tapinarof may be an effective and safe topical treatment for mild to severe plaque psoriasis.

Summary: Tetracycline-class drugs are commonly used in dermatology for treating skin diseases. This study reviewed the available evidence on whether taking these drugs with food affects their absorption and clinical efficacy. The study found that co-administration with food decreased systemic absorption of tetracycline, while the impact on doxycycline and minocycline varied. Oral sarecycline showed decreased absorption with food. Only sarecycline demonstrated limited or no impact of food intake on clinical efficacy. The study suggested considering patient adherence when choosing to take doxycycline, minocycline, and sarecycline with food.

Summary: Understanding the genetic factors in psoriasis can help improve targeted treatment strategies. This review discusses the genes associated with psoriasis pathogenesis and their connection to available treatment options. Searching various databases, relevant genetic markers and treatments were identified. Gene variants involved in inflammatory pathways, such as interleukins and interferons, are commonly implicated in psoriasis. Some treatments, like IL23 and TYK2 inhibitors, target genes associated with psoriasis. Multiple genes are involved in psoriasis pathogenesis, providing potential avenues for developing new treatment strategies and improving outcomes.
