Who can I ask for help?: Mechanisms behind digital inequality in public transport

Summary: Digitalisation has become widespread in public transport, particularly in urban areas. However, it can have negative impacts on certain groups, such as older adults, people with lower education levels, impairments, and migration backgrounds. Difficulties in digital skills, lack of on-the-go technology use, inadequate devices, and complex technology design contribute to the challenges faced by these groups. Nonetheless, coping strategies, including support from social networks, can help mitigate the consequences and prevent exclusion from public transport.

Social exclusion and the public bus system in Santiago, Chile

Summary: This research examines the relationship between transportation and social exclusion in Santiago, Chile by studying the disadvantages faced by public bus riders. Qualitative focus groups were used to identify the factors that prevent the use of public buses, and a survey was conducted with 512 valid responses. Eight dimensions were identified, with security being the worst evaluated and presenting the greatest disadvantage. More than 50% of riders, especially women, young people, and the elderly, have experienced the inability to use public transit buses due to safety concerns. One important observation is the need for further transportation disadvantage research from a gender perspective.

Beyond Friendship: The Spectrum of Social Participation of Autistic Adults

Summary: Difficulties with social interactions and communication continue to be present in adulthood for individuals with autism. This qualitative study explores the range of social participation activities and community contacts that contribute to connection in the perspective of 40 autistic adults. The findings reveal five main contexts where social participation occurs, including vocational settings, neighborhoods, interest groups, support services, inclusive environments, as well as online networks and apps. The implications for practice suggest the importance of engaging with newer social networking platforms, as well as utilizing traditional paths such as employment and support services to support diverse social participation.

I just don't go nowhere: How transportation disadvantage reinforces social exclusion

Transport poverty meets car dependency: A GPS tracking study of socially disadvantaged groups in European rural peripheries

Summary: This article examines the spatial mobility of disadvantaged populations to enhance understanding of transport poverty. The study, based on participatory GPS tracking data from rural areas in Czechia and Germany, finds that individual social disadvantage is more important than regional spatial disadvantage in determining mobility. Daily mobility is influenced by individual strategies and social networks. The study also highlights the varying mobility patterns among socially disadvantaged groups and the impact of car access on different levels of social disadvantage. The findings emphasize the importance of understanding how social ties mediate automobility in rural areas and its implications for social participation.

Transportation experiences of Syrian refugees under the clampdown of poverty, social exclusion and spatial segregation

Summary: The study evaluated the transportation experiences of Syrian refugees in the Altındag district of Ankara, Turkey, finding that they faced serious issues of transportation and accessibility, which mainly affected female participants. While spatial segregation reinforced a sense of belonging among refugees, it also restricted their relations with the local society.

Emotional Intelligence in Autistic Adults: A Review with Considerations for Employers

Summary: Emotional intelligence is crucial for the workplace, and research has shown that autistic individuals may have lower levels of emotional intelligence, which could put them at a disadvantage. There has been limited research on how autistic adults fare in different facets of emotional intelligence. All four facets of emotional intelligence: perceiving emotions, using emotions to facilitate thought, understanding emotions, and managing emotions are important in understanding emotional intelligence and autism. This paper reviews existing research on how autistic individuals perform in each facet and provides insights for workplaces in supporting autistic individuals for sustainable career success and organizational diversity.

Sensitivity to Social Agency in Autistic Adults

Summary: The study demonstrates that, despite a decreased interest in social phenomena, autistic adults still exhibit a social facilitation effect and perform more accurately on a prediction task when they believe the cue represents another participant. This suggests that the difficulties autistic individuals face in interpreting social behavior may not stem from a lack of sensitivity to social agency.

How Do Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder Participate in the Labor Market? A German Multi-center Survey

Summary: International studies have shown that adults with ASD face disadvantages in the labor market. However, data on their participation in the German labor market are limited. This study found that adults with ASD in Germany have above average levels of education, below average rates of employment, and high rates of financial dependency, highlighting the poor integration of adults with ASD into the German labor market and the need for vocational support policies.

Access to employment: A comparison of autistic, neurodivergent and neurotypical adults' experiences of hiring processes in the United Kingdom

Employment profiles of autistic adults in Australia

Summary: This study aimed to describe and explore factors related to employment for Australian autistic adults, finding that those with more autistic traits and more social and workplace supports were more likely to be employed in jobs that better suited them. Appropriate workplace adjustments, a supportive environment, and adequate social supports may improve employment outcomes for autistic adults.

Social Responsiveness and Psychosocial Functioning in Adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome

Summary: This study explored symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in adults with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), focusing on their psychosocial functionality. The results showed that impaired social responsiveness was common in participants with PWS and had a significant impact on their overall functionality, particularly in social and personal relationships. The study highlights the importance of assessing social skills in psychosocial evaluations of PWS patients.

Commentary: The challenges and promises of competitively employing autistic adults in the United States

Summary: Current statistics in the United States show that autistic individuals have high rates of unemployment and underemployment throughout their lives. Despite federal legislation, most autistic individuals receiving state services are still placed in day programs or sheltered workshops instead of competitive integrated settings. Private sector companies and autism researchers are recognizing the potential of autistic workers and conducting trials of interventions and services to support them. However, the fragmented and difficult-to-navigate federal services system remains a barrier. More research is needed to improve outcomes for autistic workers and promote systems change.

Autistic adults benefit from and enjoy learning via social interaction as much as neurotypical adults do

Summary: This study found that autistic individuals have poor processing of social signals. The most effective way for them to learn is through live teaching on online platforms, with no difference in learning outcomes between autistic and neurotypical individuals. Additionally, enjoyment was the strongest predictor of learning, with both groups reporting higher enjoyment during live interaction compared to other conditions, and similar levels of anxiety across conditions.

Negative first impression judgements of autistic children by non-autistic adults

Summary: Based on brief videos, this study found that non-autistic adults rated autistic children less favorably than non-autistic children in terms of first impressions, with audio playing a significant role. The rater's own characteristics such as social competence, autism stigma, and past experiences with autistic people were found to be related to the bias against autistic children. These negative judgments may contribute to the social exclusion experienced by autistic children.
