Summary: This retrospective study analyzed 50 pediatric mandibular condylar fractures in 43 patients who presented to the authors' institution between 1990 and 2016. The study found variations in fracture patterns and treatment approaches among different age groups, with younger patients more commonly undergoing nonoperative management. Adherence to the treatment algorithm was associated with a significant reduction in complications.

Summary: Clival chordomas are aggressive skull base tumors that require surgery and radiotherapy for effective treatment. Molecular targeted drugs have a limited role. Younger age, Ki67 = 5% tumors, and adjuvant radiotherapy are associated with improved survival.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzes the features and management approach of anaphylactic reactions in children evaluated at a pediatric clinic in Pavia. The results show that 80% of severe cases of anaphylaxis had other atopic comorbidities. The low usage of adrenaline highlights the importance of raising awareness of anaphylactic management in the medical community.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the effects of conservative and surgical approaches on pediatric bilateral condylar fractures (PBCF) and their associated long-term complications. The findings show that conservative treatment is preferred for patients under 12 years old. Moreover, a combined approach of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) on one side and intermaxillary fixation (IMF) on the other side is effective in improving daily functioning of the temporomandibular joint and reducing long-term complications.

Summary: This study compares the perioperative outcomes and long-term survival of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) patients who underwent extended pleurectomy and decortication (eP/D) and extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP). The results demonstrate that eP/D can be a well-tolerated surgical procedure with comparable oncological outcomes to EPP, especially in carefully selected patients.

Summary: Antral web is a rare cause of gastric outlet obstruction in children, with diverse presentations and lacking management guidance. This study retrospectively evaluated 23 cases over 20 years, with vomiting (83%) and upper gastrointestinal bleeding (48%) as main presentations. 57% of cases underwent intervention, with surgical treatments achieving cure in 11 out of 12 cases.

Summary: This retrospective study of 195 children and adolescents with Graves' disease in Korea found that the cumulative remission rate increased with the duration of antithyroid drug (ATD) treatment. FT4 level at diagnosis was identified as a predicting factor for remission, and long-term methimazole treatment was shown to be a useful option before definitive treatment in children and adolescents with GD.

Summary: Robotic hepatectomy (RH) is increasingly utilized for minor and major liver resections, with the IWATE criteria being developed to classify minimally invasive liver resections by difficulty. This study applied the IWATE criteria in RH and described perioperative and oncologic outcomes. Results showed a close association between the IWATE criteria and surgical outcomes of RH, with the majority of resections being parenchymal-sparing approaches.

Summary: This study evaluated the rates of complications after cranioplasty using different materials and found that methyl methacrylate was associated with a higher risk of infection, while titanium was associated with shorter hospital stays. However, the quality of existing literature is poor, and there is insufficient evidence to comprehensively assess the risk profiles of different craniaplasty materials across multiple outcomes.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to characterize the frequency, presentation, documentation, and outcomes of pediatric traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) combined with craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma. The study found that although concomitant TBIs were common among pediatric CMF trauma patients, they were largely underreported. The findings highlight the importance of recognizing and documenting TBIs in these patients and suggest collaboration with neurology and/or neurosurgery teams for management.

Summary: Evaluated two main surgical techniques for laryngochondroplasty and found that endoscopic visualization is associated with lower short-term complications, with no difference in long-term complications and patient satisfaction. Studies performed before 2010 had significantly greater number of short-term complications, with no difference in long-term complications and patient satisfaction.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis showed that open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) significantly improved functional outcomes and decreased pain compared to closed treatment for mandibular condyle fractures. However, ORIF had a higher risk of postoperative infection and potential facial nerve injury, which should be considered when making treatment decisions.

Summary: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a highly virulent opportunistic Gram-negative bacterial pathogen that causes various acute and chronic infections in humans. Its pathogenicity is attributed to a wide range of cell-associated and secreted virulence factors, which allow the pathogen to colonize different niches within hosts and evade host innate immune defenses. Inducing cytotoxicity in host cells is a major virulence strategy for P. aeruginosa, and it has developed numerous cytotoxins that can induce different forms of cell death. In this review, we provide a comprehensive analysis of P. aeruginosa cytotoxins, focusing on their mechanisms of cytotoxicity and their impact on host immune responses.

Summary: This review article provides an overview of hypertrophic scarring (HTS), which is an aberrant form of wound healing characterized by excessive deposition of extracellular matrix and connective tissue at the injury site. The article discusses the normal wound healing phases and the dysregulated mechanisms associated with HTS development. It also reviews animal models of HTS, their limitations, and the current and emerging treatments for HTS.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the healthcare system, particularly in terms of industry physician payments. This study compared payment data before and after the pandemic for various surgical specialties. The findings showed a decrease in industry payments for physicians and surgeons, with almost all surgical subspecialties experiencing a decrease. However, charitable contributions and compensation for non-consulting services increased during this period.
