Background. To investigate the expression of periostin in breast cancer and its clinical relevance. Methods. Periostin mRNA expression in breast tissues was measured by RT-PCR. Periostin protein in breast tissues was evaluated by Western blot. Immunohistochemistry method (Envision method) was carried out to detect the expression of periostin in breast cancer tissues of different clinical stages and metastasized lymph nodes, as well as benign breast disease. Results. The expression of periostin in cancer tissue was increased at both mRNA level (P < 0.05) and protein level (P < 0.05) compared with benign and normal breast tissues. The periostin protein expression level increased with breast cancer clinical stages as shown by IHC. Conclusion. Periostin was overexpressed in breast cancer tissues as opposed to normal breast, which implies its role in the pathogenesis and development of this disorder. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. Identification of a Novel Defined Immune-Autophagy-Related Gene Signature Associated With Clinical and Prognostic Features of Kidney Renal Clear Cell Carcinoma

Guangyuan Zhang, Lei Zhang, Si Sun, Ming Chen

Summary: This study identified CANX, BID, NAMPT, and BIRC5 as immune-autophagy-related genes with independent prognostic value in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma. These genes were significantly correlated with immune score, immune checkpoint, iron death, methylation, and OCLR score. The risk prognostic model based on them was well constructed, and experimental results were consistent with the bioinformatics analysis.

Summary: This study found that FGF17, PRKCG, SSTR1, and SCTR were metastatic immune-related differentially expressed genes (mIR-DEGs) with independent prognostic values in renal clear cell carcinoma. These genes were significantly associated with clinicopathological factors and immune checkpoint-related genes. The risk prognostic model based on these genes showed good predictive potential.

Summary: This study compared the incidence of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) in patients undergoing open gastrectomy (OG) and laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) for gastric cancer. The results showed no significant difference in POPF incidence between the OG group and LG group in patients undergoing gastric cancer surgery. The study emphasizes the need for improvement in surgical techniques and further research to explore the risk factors.

Fibrinogen Is Associated with Prognosis of Critically Ill Patients with Sepsis: A Study Based on Cox Regression and Propensity Score Matching

Chi Yao, Guangyuan Zhang, Nieke Zhang, Renjie Li, Si Sun, Lei Zhang, Yi Xia, Shuqiu Chen, Jin Sun, Ming Chen

Summary: This study found that fibrinogen levels are associated with the prognosis of sepsis patients. The relationship between elevated and decreased levels of fibrinogen and mortality was shown to be nonlinear. Subgroup analysis confirmed the robustness of this association. However, after adjusting for confounding factors, the association between decreased fibrinogen levels and increased inhospital mortality was denied.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using humanized anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) antibodies conjugated with near-infrared dyes to specifically label gastric cancers in mouse models. Orthotopic models showed bright and specific labeling with more than ten times higher tumor-to-background ratios compared to the control. This tumor-specific fluorescent antibody has promising potential as a clinical tool for improving visualization of gastric cancer margins during surgical resection.

Use of Broadband Personality Tests in Bariatric Surgery: A Scoping Review

Sarah Maki, Melissa Leon, Emily Glenn, Tiffany Tanner, Crystal Krause

Summary: This scoping review analyzed the literature on the use of broadband personality tests in the bariatric surgical population to optimize weight loss outcomes. The study found significant associations between personality scales and weight loss, but inconsistent reporting of outcome measures made it challenging to draw concrete conclusions. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommends standardization of outcome reporting to improve the reliability of predicting weight loss outcomes.
