Several ethoxylated sugar-based amine surfactants have been synthesized and characterized by IR and (HNMR)-H-1 spectroscopy. The surface activity of the prepared compounds has been thoroughly studied and some of their surface properties (such as CMC, Gamma(max), and A(min)) have been calculated. The surface properties of the prepared compounds were correlated to their chemical structure. It was found that CMC decreases when increasing the molecular weight of polyethylene glycols, whereas A(min) increases. Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters of adsorption and micellization were also calculated. They include Delta G, Delta H, and Delta S of micellization and adsorption. The data show that the synthesized surfactants favor adsorption, so that they can be used as demulsifiers for crude oil emulsions. In this respect, the demulsification test was carried out and the results of demulsification efficiency were correlated to the chemical composition of the investigated compounds. Some factors that affect the demulsification efficiency were also considered.

Summary: In this study, bio-based hydrogels composed of pectin and polyacrylic acid were prepared by gamma radiation and reinforced with different ratios of gallic acid. The results showed that the incorporation of gallic acid enhanced the swelling performance of the hydrogel, reaching an optimum value before decreasing. The hydrogels displayed excellent antibacterial activity and efficient removal of lead ions.

Summary: This research article focuses on the elimination of toxic chromium ions Cr(VI) from simulated solution to save water resources depleted by climate change. Eco-friendly hydrogel composites, chitosan/Na-alginate/polyacrylic acid (CS/Na-Alg/PAAc) and Ni/chitosan/Na-alginate/polyacrylic acid (Ni@CS/Na-Alg/PAAc), were created as a basin for the in-situ formation of Ni nanoparticles. The composites demonstrated favorable adsorption and high removal efficiency for Cr(VI).

Summary: Modified uncrosslinked and crosslinked chitosan derivatives were investigated as green sorbents for copper (Cu2+) and lead (Pb2+) cation removal. The adsorption capacities of the chitosan-modified products were compared, and Cs/GA/MBA exhibited the highest adsorption capacity due to stable chelate structures formed. The metal uptake process was confirmed by comparing the surface topography of the free sorbents and the metal-loaded sorbents using atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Summary: The study focuses on the manufacture of scented biofilms with antimicrobial activity from cellulosic materials. The biofilms were formed through a multi-step process assisted by AFM, using a blend of PVA and alkaline cellulose. The optimized film was prepared with the addition of essential clove oil and exhibited excellent wettability resistance and antimicrobial properties against various pathogens. These biofilms are considered a promising choice for packaging applications.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption performance of some chitosan-modified products on the removal of Methylene Blue dye. The modified chitosan derivatives showed outstanding mechanical qualities, reusability, and adsorption capacity. The adsorption abilities of the derivatives were ranked as follows: N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan < chitosan grafted with glutaraldehyde < chitosan cross-linked with glutaraldehyde/epichlorohydrin < chitosan cross-linked with glutaraldehyde/methylene bis(acrylamide). The swelling performance of the sorbents was verified under different conditions and the derivatives showed good reusability throughout multiple cycles.
