With the recent advances in neuroimaging it has become possible to characterize the cerebral reorganization that occurs in response to therapy and the conditions under which this reorganization occurs. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a neuroimaging technique that allows us to visualize white matter tracts and potential changes associated with different treatments. To date, only few data on structural neuroplasticity related to the recovery of poststroke aphasia were reported. We describe a case of aphasic stroke patient, who was studied before and after the intense rehabilitative treatment by using neuropsychologic evaluation and DTI examination, to assess the integrity of the arcuate fasciculus related to motor, language, and cognitive recovery.

Neuropsychological implication in possible antibody-negative limbic encephalitis: a clinical case report

Viviana Lo Buono, Lilla Bonanno, Rosanna Palmeri, Simona Cammaroto, Rosa Morabito, Maria Cristina De Cola, Edoardo Sessa, Silvia Marino, Placido Bramanti, Francesco Corallo

Summary: Autoimmune limbic encephalitis is a brain inflammatory process that involves the medial temporal lobe and is mediated by antibodies. Diagnosing antibody-negative limbic encephalitis is challenging as it relies on excluding other causes. This case report describes a patient with typical radiological changes of limbic encephalitis, but with no identifiable antibodies and neuropsychological impairment.

Effect of MAO-B Inhibitors on Neurometabolic Profile of Patients Affected by Parkinson Disease: A Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study

Lilla Bonanno, Rosella Ciurleo, Silvia Marino, Claudio Ruvolo, Rosa Morabito, Alessia Bramanti, Francesco Corallo

Summary: This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the influence of rasagiline and selegiline on the neurometabolic profile of de novo Parkinson's disease patients. The study found that after 12 months of therapy, both drugs were able to restore NAA levels and showed correlation with UPDRS-III scores. This is the first longitudinal study providing evidence for the use of H-1-MRS to objectively evaluate the effects of MAO-B inhibitors on PD patients.

Humanoid Robot Use in Cognitive Rehabilitation of Patients with Severe Brain Injury: A Pilot Study

Francesco Corallo, Giuseppa Maresca, Caterina Formica, Lilla Bonanno, Alessia Bramanti, Nicholas Parasporo, Fabio Mauro Giambo, Maria Cristina De Cola, Viviana Lo Buono

Summary: Severe acquired brain injury is a global public health problem that leads to disability. Access to multidisciplinary rehabilitation is limited for these patients, despite the evidence of its benefits. This pilot study suggests that using a humanoid robot for rehabilitation treatment has a greater effect on quality of life and mood compared to traditional methods.

Viviana Lo Buono, Lilla Bonanno, Francesco Corallo, Davide Cardile, Giangaetano D'Aleo, Carmela Rifici, Edoardo Sessa, Angelo Quartarone, Maria Cristina De Cola

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between body image perception and its correlation with disability, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and self-esteem in patients with multiple sclerosis. The results showed a significant positive correlation between body image and disability, self-esteem, somatization, depression, and anxiety. This suggests that body image has important health outcomes in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Improvement of Self-Esteem in Children with Specific Learning Disorders after Donkey-Assisted Therapy

Francesco Corallo, Lilla Bonanno, Davide Cardile, Francesca Luvara, Silvia Giliberto, Marcella Di Cara, Simona Leonardi, Angelo Quartarone, Giuseppe Rao, Alessandra Pidala

Summary: This study aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of animal-assisted therapy on children with dyslexia by improving self-esteem and school performance. The results showed significant improvement in reading and writing abilities in the experimental group using animal-assisted therapy, while there was no significant change in self-esteem in the control group. Thus, animal-assisted therapy is a viable and effective option for enhancing the rehabilitation process and improving cognitive and language skills recovery in dyslexic children.

Body Image and Emotional Status in Patients with Acquired Brain Injury

Viviana Lo Buono, Francesco Corallo, Lilla Bonanno, Angelo Quartarone, Maria Cristina De Cola

Summary: Emotional experiences can influence how individuals perceive their own body image. This study examines the correlation between mood disorders and lesion sites on body image in patients with acquired brain injury. The results show a moderate correlation between depression/anxiety and body image, with the right lesion site being a predictive factor. Additionally, factors such as anxiety, cognitive functioning, and marital status were found to be significant predictors of body image. The findings highlight the importance of neuropsychological interventions to improve cognitive performance and emotional well-being in patients with brain injury for a better self-perception of body image and quality of life.

Neural Plasticity Changes Induced by Motor Robotic Rehabilitation in Stroke Patients: The Contribution of Functional Neuroimaging

Lilla Bonanno, Antonio Cannuli, Loris Pignolo, Silvia Marino, Angelo Quartarone, Rocco Salvatore Calabro, Antonio Cerasa

Summary: Robotic rehabilitation is an advanced treatment for stroke patients, and this review aims to assess the neurofunctional correlates of cutting-edge robotic therapies in enhancing motor recovery. The review suggests that neural plasticity within specific areas of the brain is more sensitive to compensation strategies in motor recovery, despite the heterogeneity in robotic devices and clinical status. However, more research is needed to understand the neurobiological differences between robotic and traditional rehabilitation approaches.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endovascular treatment (EVT) in primary and EVT-induced secondary medium-vessel occlusions (MeVO). The results showed that primary MeVO had poorer outcomes in terms of complications, EVT efficacy, and the proportion of patients with a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) of 0-2 at 3 months compared to exclusive large-vessel occlusion (LVO). However, EVT-induced secondary MeVO showed similar safety and efficacy outcomes as exclusive LVO and had better outcomes in terms of mRS 0-2 compared to primary MeVO.
