Summary: Stroke mimics account for a significant proportion of hospital admissions, and accurate diagnosis with multi-modal CT or MRI is essential to avoid unnecessary treatment and costs. Prompt resolution of symptoms can be achieved in neurological and medical mimics, while treatment of functional disorders may be challenging and incomplete.

Summary: Stroke mimics are common in the emergency department, and early detection is crucial for initiating appropriate treatment. This study compared the frequency, clinical characteristics, and predictors of non-neurological and neurological stroke mimics in patients with suspected stroke. The results highlighted the importance of awareness of underlying etiologies and differences in clinical characteristics for optimal care.

Summary: This study found that the association between age at stroke onset and dementia risk is unclear, as well as the role of post-stroke lifestyle in dementia risk. Using data from the UK Biobank, the researchers discovered that participants with a history of stroke had a higher risk of dementia, especially those who experienced stroke at a younger age. Additionally, a favorable lifestyle after stroke was associated with a lower risk of incident dementia.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of Patient-Reported Outcomes Information Measurement System (PROMIS) to predict emergency department (ED) visits and admissions in stroke patients. Results showed that PROs measuring mental health had stronger associations with ED visits, while PROs measuring physical health had stronger associations with admissions.

Summary: In elderly patients, TIA mimics are more likely to be internal medicine diseases and epilepsy compared to younger patients. Excluding internal medicine diseases seems to be important in elderly patients. Facial palsy, motor weakness, dysarthria, and sensory impairment are associated with TIA.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between diurnal temperature range (DTR) and hospital admissions for cerebrovascular disease (CVD) in the rural areas of Tianshui, Gansu Province, China from 2018 to 2020. The results showed a U-shape relationship between DTR and CVD hospital admissions, with both high and low DTR significantly associated with higher admissions. The effects of DTR varied among different populations, with males and adults being more sensitive than females and the elderly.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to obtain precise estimates on the prevalence and incidence of stroke among people with HIV. The results showed a high occurrence of stroke in HIV-infected individuals, particularly ischemic stroke. Therefore, efforts should be made to identify risk factors, improve treatment, and enhance rehabilitation for stroke in order to reduce the disease burden among people with HIV.

Summary: This study evaluated the correlation between serum vitamin D level and phonetic function in subacute stroke patients. The results showed a positive correlation between vitamin D levels and the severity of phonation, and vitamin D deficiency may be a factor in predicting phonation severity in stroke patients.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of high-level concentrations of air pollutants on ischemic stroke among hypertension patients during outdoor periods. The results showed a positive association between increased peak-hour concentrations of air pollutants and hospital admissions for ischemic stroke among hypertension patients. PM2.5, NO2, and O-3 were found to have significant effects. It is recommended that hypertension patients avoid outdoor activities during peak hours.

Summary: This study investigated the short-term effect of PM2.5 and PM10 on hospital admissions for stroke among patients with comorbid T2D in Beijing, China. The results showed that high particulate matter levels might be a risk factor for stroke in patients with T2D, with a linear exposure-response relationship observed for both PM2.5 and PM10.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between age and appropriateness of emergency department visits, and the mismatching between clinical severity in the emergency department and hospitalizations. The results showed that the appropriateness of emergency department visits increased with age, while the mismatching between clinical severity and hospitalizations decreased with age.

Summary: This study found that long-term exposure to fine PM2.5, NO2, and tropospheric ozone is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases among the elderly population in the United States. At various pollutant concentrations, all studied outcomes consistently showed an increased risk association.

Summary: Alterations in amino acids (AAs) can serve as promising biomarkers for the early diagnosis of moderate ischemic stroke. The study identified a panel of AAs that are associated with stroke and can be used for early-stage stroke detection. The metabolism of AAs can be considered as a key indicator for both the prevention and treatment of ischemic stroke.

Summary: Polytrauma is recognized as a disease beyond anatomical injuries. Due to population growth, centralization, and slow preventive measures uptake, major trauma presentations in most trauma systems show a slow but steady increase. Polytrauma patients represent about 25% of the major trauma admissions, with higher injury severity, static incidence, and higher but improving mortality compared to all major trauma patients.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of e-ASPECTS software in delineating the extent of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) on brain CT scans. The results showed that the software achieved excellent or good delineation of ICH extent in 71% of cases. However, it was more likely to over- or under-estimate the extent when ICH was more extensive, intraventricular, or extra-axial.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endovascular treatment (EVT) in primary and EVT-induced secondary medium-vessel occlusions (MeVO). The results showed that primary MeVO had poorer outcomes in terms of complications, EVT efficacy, and the proportion of patients with a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) of 0-2 at 3 months compared to exclusive large-vessel occlusion (LVO). However, EVT-induced secondary MeVO showed similar safety and efficacy outcomes as exclusive LVO and had better outcomes in terms of mRS 0-2 compared to primary MeVO.

Summary: This study identified the barriers and facilitators to adopting tenecteplase (TNK) as a thrombolytic treatment for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) by conducting qualitative research with stroke clinicians in Texas. The findings suggest that providing evidence and identifying key change processes can help clinicians achieve consensus on adopting TNK for AIS treatment.

Summary: This study assessed the geographic accessibility of stroke rehabilitation facilities in Tennessee. The study found that rural counties had significantly longer travel distances and times compared to urban counties. Counties with high and medium stroke prevalence also had higher travel times and distances compared to low stroke prevalence counties. Therefore, addressing transportation barriers and implementing tele-rehabilitation are crucial for improving access to stroke aftercare in these areas.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels and the severity and prognosis of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The results showed that serum ALP levels in ICH patients were significantly elevated and correlated with hematoma volume and Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score. High serum ALP levels may serve as a potential predictor for the severity and unfavorable prognosis of ICH.
