The aim of this study was to analyse the talent identification process of a professional soccer club. A preselection of players (n=64) aged 9-10years and a final selection (n=21) were performed by the technical staff through the observation during training sessions and matches. Also, 34 age-matched players of an open soccer camp (CampP) acted as controls. All participants underwent anthropometric, maturity and performance measurements. Preselected outfield players (OFs) were older and leaner than CampP (P<0.05). Besides, they performed better in velocity, agility, endurance and jump tests (P<0.05). A discriminant analysis showed that velocity and agility were the most important parameters. Finally, selected OFs were older and displayed better agility and endurance compared to the nonselected OFs (P<0.05). Goalkeepers (GKs) were taller and heavier and had more body fat than OFs; also, they performed worse in the physical tests (P<0.05). Finally, selected GKs were older and taller, had a higher predicted height and advanced maturity and performed better in the handgrip (dynamometry) and jump tests (P<0.05). Thus, the technical staff selected OFs with a particular anthropometry and best performance, particularly agility and endurance, while GKs had a different profile. Moreover, chronological age had an important role in the whole selection process.

Effects of Massage and Cold Water Immersion After an Exhaustive Run on Running Economy and Biomechanics: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Iratxe Dunabeitia, Haritz Arrieta, Ana Rodriguez-Larrad, Javier Gil, Izaro Esain, Susana M. Gil, Jon Irazusta, Iraia Bidaurrazaga-Letona

Summary: This study compared the effects of massage and cold water immersion as common recovery interventions after an exhausting interval running session on running economy and biomechanics. The results showed that massage intervention led to faster recovery, improved running economy, and stride changes compared to cold water immersion and passive rest.

The effects of footwear midsole longitudinal bending stiffness on running economy and ground contact biomechanics: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Victor Rodrigo-Carranza, Fernando Gonzalez-Mohino, Jordan Santos-Concejero, Jose Maria Gonzalez-Rave

Summary: Increasing longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS) improves running economy (RE) and increases stride length and contact time. Footwear with increased LBS enhances RE to a greater degree at higher running speeds. Shoe mass, type of plate (flat or curve), and running speed are crucial factors to consider when designing shoes aimed at improving long-distance running performance.

Injuries are negatively associated with player progression in an elite football academy

Jon Larruskain, Jose A. Lekue, Imanol Martin-Garetxana, Irantzu Barrio, Alan McCall, Susana M. Gil

Summary: The study found that injuries were negatively associated with player progression and likelihood of continuing in a football academy. It is essential to prioritize injury prevention and return-to-play strategies.

The role of the neural stimulus in regulating skeletal muscle hypertrophy

Carlos Alix-Fages, Alessandro Del Vecchio, Eneko Baz-Valle, Jordan Santos-Concejero, Carlos Balsalobre-Fernandez

Summary: Resistance training plays a crucial role in stimulating muscle hypertrophy, with neural behavior also influencing muscle growth. Researchers and trainers should consider how neural adaptations and fatigue accumulation impact hypertrophic responses, and incorporate neurophysiological assessments to better understand the effects of resistance training variables on muscular adaptations.

Summary: Injuries have a negative impact on the development of football players. A study was conducted to examine the injury burden of male academy football players based on their maturity status and timing. The results show that as maturity status increases, the overall injury burden also increases. Growth-related injuries are more burdensome during the period of approaching maturity, while muscle and joint/ligament injuries have a higher impact after maturity and in adults. Monitoring maturity is crucial for designing targeted injury prevention programs.

Summary: This case study analyzed the training of a world-class middle-/long-distance runner over a year's duration using two methods. The study found potential flaws with the recent work suggesting polarized training as the most effective means to improve endurance performance, as different analysis methods produced different training intensity distributions.

Effects of the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% 2 shoe on long-interval training performance, kinematics, neuromuscular parameters, running power and fatigue

Mario Castellanos-Salamanca, Victor Rodrigo-Carranza, Sergio Rodriguez-Barbero, Jose Maria Gonzalez-Rave, Jordan Santos-Concejero, Fernando Gonzalez-Mohino

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of Nike ZoomX Vaporfly (VPF) on long-interval training performance, kinematic parameters, running power, and fatigue compared to a traditional running shoe. The results showed that using VPF shoes improved long-interval training performance and reduced subjective perceived muscle pain.

Effect of Baduanjin on physical functioning and balance in adults with mild-to-moderate intellectual disabilities: A comparative study

Iraia Bidaurrazaga-Letona, Carlos Ayan, Iratxe Dunabeitia, Izaro Esain, Xabier Monasterio, Biotz Zulueta, Jon Torres-Unda

Summary: This study examined the impact of Baduanjin, a mindfulness-based exercise intervention, on the physical functioning and balance of adults with intellectual disabilities. The results showed significant improvements in walking test, chair stand test, and overall score for participants who received Baduanjin intervention. The study concludes that Baduanjin practice may cause significant but small improvements in physical functioning of adults with intellectual disabilities.

Fat Oxidation during Exercise in People with Spinal Cord Injury, and Protocols Used: A Systematic Review

Soraya Martin-Manjarres, Javier Leal-Martin, Cristina Granados, Esmeralda Mata, Angel Gil-Agudo, Irene Rodriguez-Gomez, Ignacio Ara

Summary: There is limited research on fat oxidation ability in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Current studies suggest that SCI patients have lower peak fat oxidation (PFO) compared to non-injured individuals during lower-limb exercise, but higher PFO values during upper-limb exercise. The small and heterogeneous sample sizes in these studies are a major limitation.

A Systematic Review of the Effects of Different Resistance Training Volumes on Muscle Hypertrophy

Eneko Baz-Valle, Carlos Balsalobre-Fernandez, Carlos Alix-Fages, Jordan Santos-Concejero

Summary: The main goal of this study was to compare the effects of moderate and high training volumes on muscle hypertrophy. The results showed no differences between moderate and high training volume responses for the quadriceps and the biceps brachii, but a high training volume was found to be more effective in increasing muscle mass in the triceps brachii. The study suggests that a range of 12-20 weekly sets per muscle group may be the optimal recommendation for increasing muscle hypertrophy in young, trained men.
