Summary: Periodic composite structures as acoustic metamaterials have attracted significant research interest due to their unique dynamics characteristics and effective medium properties. In this study, a 3-D composite metastructure design capable of inducing low frequency ultrawide bandgaps is proposed. Through numerical and experimental analysis, it is demonstrated that the composite metastructures can achieve vibration attenuation over a broad frequency range, making them promising for low frequency broadband vibration and noise control applications.

Summary: The healthcare dynamic has shifted to patient-centred care, requiring more individualised therapies. However, the pharmaceutical industry has not fully adapted to this shift, preventing pharmacists from providing completely personalised medicine to patients. This article reviews the limitations of current pharmaceutical manufacturing methods, discusses the benefits of 3D printing for personalised medicine, and explores the implications for pharmacy practice and policy.

Summary: Three-dimensional imaging and advanced manufacturing are used in health care research to develop new diagnostic and surgical planning methods, as well as personalized treatments and implants. This study introduces 3-D ultrasound as an option for imaging ear reconstruction and compares it with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The results show that ultrasound is a low-cost alternative with comparable accuracy to MRI.

Summary: Porous titanium implant surfaces fabricated using additive manufacturing can enhance bone-implant stability. A new lattice type implant was designed to improve bone ingrowth efficiency and interfacial bonded strength. The experiment showed that the new lattice implant had significantly higher bonded strength compared to the traditional implant.

Summary: This work presents a novel 3-D-printed triple-mode dielectric resonator for microwave filter applications. It demonstrates the use of an odd number of periodic rings placed along a dielectric combline resonator to create a miniaturized filter structure capable of producing a quasielliptic triple-mode filter response. The resonator is fabricated using alumina with lithography-based ceramic manufacturing and housed in a compact single-cavity structure. The designed filter operates at a specific center frequency, fractional bandwidth, and measured quality factor.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to protect the 3D printing industry from innovation stagnation caused by patenting obvious materials by using an open-source approach. An open-source algorithm was implemented in Python to identify obvious 3D printing materials, and compound combinations of two and three constituents were tested. The results show the potential of an open-source system to generate suitable printing materials for specific business cases based on desired material properties.

Summary: This study investigates the wear properties of an IN718 coating deposited by Laser Metal Deposition (LMD). The scanning strategy does not affect the wear resistance of the deposited sample. The wear volume of the coating increases linearly with the normal load, with abrasion and adhesion as the main wear mechanisms. After a certain amount of cycles, a protective oxide layer appears and prevents wear of IN718. Wrought IN718 has slightly better wear resistance than IN718 obtained by LMD, possibly due to the presence of detrimental phases in the LMD samples.

Summary: This paper presents the state-of-the-art in polymer-based 3-D printing of metal-pipe rectangular waveguides with terahertz filters operating in the WR-2.2 band. The measured performances of the through line, single-cavity resonators, and bandpass filters demonstrate the effectiveness of polymer-based 3-D printing technology, surpassing results from metal-based 3-D printing. These findings may challenge traditional machining technologies in the near future.

Summary: This study introduces the development of a novel hydraulic robotic actuator through the use of additive manufacturing (AM) technology, which allows for lightweight and compact design. A prototype of a titanium hydraulic robot actuator is fabricated using the metal powder bed fusion (M-PBF) AM process and validated through loading experiments. The study demonstrates that AM design and manufacturing methods at the system level can increase output torque, while reducing weight and volume. The hydraulic driving system makes the robotic actuator more compact and robust in tough environments compared to traditional electric motor actuators. The study also suggests the potential wide application of AM in designing and printing similar hydraulic link mechanisms for heavy-duty robots or mobile humanoid robots.
