Introduction. Studies have shown a high prevalence of sexual dysfunctions among individuals with a variety of health problems. Aim. To obtain a population-based assessment of these matters, we studied associations between indicators of physical and mental health problems and sexual dysfunctions in Denmark. Methods. We used questionnaire data from 4,415 sexually active men (mean age 48 years) and women (mean age 45 years) who participated in a nationally representative survey in 2005. Cross-sectional associations of overall health and physical and mental health problems with sexual dysfunctions in the last year were estimated by logistic regression-derived, confounder-adjusted odds ratios (ORadj). Main Outcome Measures. We calculated ORadj with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for erectile dysfunction, anorgasmia, premature ejaculation, and dyspareunia in men, for lubrication insufficiency, anorgasmia, dyspareunia, and vaginismus in women, and for sexual dysfunction and sexual difficulties overall in both sexes. Results. Sexual dysfunction was significantly more common among participants with poor self-rated health (ORadj 1.86, 95% CI 1.05-3.33 in men, ORadj 1.91, 1.08-3.37 in women). Physical health problems were significantly associated with male sexual dysfunctions (ORadj 1.75, 1.18-2.61), whereas mental health problems were significantly associated with female sexual dysfunctions (ORadj 2.59, 1.60-4.22). Conclusion. Among sexually active Danes, poor self-reported overall health is associated with increased rates of sexual dysfunction in both sexes, with physical health problems mainly affecting men's sex lives, and mental health problems being strongly associated with female sexual dysfunction. Inflammatory bowel diseases among first-generation and second-generation immigrants in Denmark: a population-based cohort study

Manasi Agrawal, Giulia Corn, Sarita Shrestha, Nete Munk Nielsen, Morten Frisch, Jean-Frederic Colombel, Tine Jess

Summary: The study estimated the relative risk of IBD among first-generation and second-generation immigrants in Denmark, finding that the risk of IBD was lower for first-generation immigrants and increased with longer duration of stay in Denmark. The relative risk of IBD was lower only among women for second-generation immigrants.

Maternal diabetes and risk of multiple sclerosis in the offspring: A Danish nationwide register-based cohort study

Nete Munk Nielsen, Sanne Gortz, Henrik Hjalgrim, Klaus Rostgaard, Kassandra L. Munger, Alberto Ascherio, Melinda Magyari, Egon Stenager, Morten Frisch

Summary: The study found that the risk of developing MS was 2.3 times higher in offspring of mothers with pregestational diabetes, while the risk was not significantly increased in offspring of mothers with gestational diabetes or diabetic fathers. This suggests that children of diabetic mothers may have an elevated risk of developing MS.

Non-therapeutic male circumcision in infancy or childhood and risk of human immunodeficiency virus and other sexually transmitted infections: national cohort study in Denmark

Morten Frisch, Jacob Simonsen

Summary: In the first national cohort study in Denmark, it was found that non-therapeutic male circumcision in infancy or childhood did not provide protection against HIV or other STIs in males up to age 36. In fact, circumcised males had a higher overall STI rate, particularly for anogenital warts and syphilis.

Summary: This study found that although the number of heart failure patients referred to cardiac rehabilitation increased each year, about half of the patients in Denmark were not referred. The study also identified several factors associated with lower odds of referral, highlighting the need for interventions to reduce disparities in referral.

Summary: Epidemiological studies have shown an association between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study investigated whether this association is influenced by genetic polymorphisms. The study found that carrying specific alleles of certain genes increased the risk of RA in individuals with periodontitis.

Sexuality Among Young Danes Treated for Long-Lasting or Severe Physical Disease: Baseline Findings in a Nationwide Cohort Study

Christian Graugaard, Mikkel Kjaer Bahnsen, Kirsten A. Boisen, Josefine Bernhard Andresen, Mikael Andersson, Morten Frisch

Summary: This study compared measures of sexuality and sexual health between Danish adolescents and young adults with and without a history of treatment for long-lasting or severe physical disease. The results showed that individuals with physical disease had similarities in fundamental aspects of sexuality, but also experienced various sexual difficulties and dysfunctions, early sexual debut, high sex partner numbers, discontentment with body or genital appearance, gender nonconformity, nonheterosexuality, and exposure to sexual assaults. Clinicians should address sexuality and relationships in AYA with chronic health conditions and provide preventive measures and counseling services specifically targeted at physically ill AYA.

Sexuality among young Danes treated for mental health problems: Baseline findings in a nationwide cohort study

Mikkel Kjaer Bahnsen, Christian Graugaard, Kirsten Arntz Boisen, Josefine Bernhard Andresen, Mikael Andersson, Morten Frisch

Summary: Mental health problems are common among adolescents and young adults, and their associations with sexuality have been sparsely researched. This study aimed to investigate the association between mental health problems and various sexual outcomes in this population. The results showed that female AYA treated for mental health problems had more active sex lives, but also reported higher rates of sexual dysfunctions, early sexual debut, high partner numbers, sexual victimization, unsafe sex, and other sexual adversities. AYA treated for mental health problems constitute a vulnerable group at increased risk of adverse sexual outcomes. Healthcare professionals should acknowledge and address these challenges in order to reduce the risk for this group.

The findings show that physical activity is meaningful in working with NEET youth and can lead to successful experiences, surplus of mental resources, and the formation of new social relations. The results highlight the potential of including physical activity in employment interventions for NEET young people.
