Summary: The aim of this study was to optimize the recovery of phenolic compounds from Cannonau grape pomaces using Pressurized Liquid Extraction (PLE). Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on a Central Composite Design 23 model was used to perform PLE experiments. The results showed that the optimum values for phenolics extraction were 130 degrees C, 55% ethanol, and 22 min. The proposed experimental model proved to be a valuable alternative method for the extraction of bioactive compounds from wine-making by-products.

Summary: Aflatoxins are highly toxic secondary metabolites of fungi that are classified as poisonous mycotoxins. They are mainly produced by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus in cereals, peanuts, and animal feeds. Sample preparation techniques, chromatographic methods, and detection techniques are crucial in aflatoxin analysis. Selectivity in analysis is achieved using bio-recognition elements like enzymes, antibodies, or DNA sequences. Determination of aflatoxins is essential for food safety due to their high toxicity and presence in food and agricultural products. The choice of analysis method depends on the sample nature, available equipment, toxin concentration range, sensitivity, detection limit, precision, selectivity, required analysis time, and personnel training.

Summary: Eritadenine, a cholesterol lowering component found in Lentinula edodes mushrooms, can be effectively extracted using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) technique with water as the solvent at a temperature of 142 degrees C. PLE also provides higher yields of total phenolics and antioxidant capacity compared to classical aqueous ethanol extraction. Eritadenine is thermally stable, making it suitable for enriching thermally treated foods.

Summary: The comparative chemical composition of different parts of Faustrime fruits was analyzed using GC-MS and UHPLC-HRMS QTof. The data obtained were combined to define the fruit's complex antioxidant activity. The principal component analysis showed the occurrence of specific compounds in different parts of the fruit, such as alpha-bisabolol and alpha-trans-bergamotol in the pulp and albedo, hexanoic acid in the seeds, and various coumarins and phenolics in the peels. The higher radical scavenging activity of the pulp was attributed to the presence of citric acid.

Summary: An analytical procedure for the screening and determination of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) in food supplements, herbal infusions, honey, and teas was successfully validated. The study found that 10% of the analyzed samples were contaminated above the maximum levels (MLs) set by European legislation. Contamination of herbal infusions of mixed plants raised potential health concerns, with 23% showing PA levels above ML. Although a high number of PAs not included in the regulation were detected in honey and herbal food supplements, their contribution to overall levels in honey was not significant.
