This study used scientometric methods to conduct an automatic content analysis on the development trends of science education research from the published articles in the four journals of International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Research in Science Education, and Science Education from 1990 to 2007. The multi-stage clustering technique was employed to investigate with what topics, to what development trends, and from whose contribution that the journal publications constructed as a science education research field. This study found that the research topic of Conceptual Change & Concept Mapping was the most studied topic, although the number of publications has slightly declined in the 2000's. The studies in the themes of Professional Development, Nature of Science and Socio-Scientific Issues, and Conceptual Chang and Analogy were found to be gaining attention over the years. This study also found that, embedded in the most cited references, the supporting disciplines and theories of science education research are constructivist learning, cognitive psychology, pedagogy, and philosophy of science.

Students' Blended Learning Course Experience Scale (BLCES): development and validation

Kaushal Kumar Bhagat, Chia-Hui Cheng, Indira Koneru, Fong Soon Fook, Chun-Yen Chang

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop a scale to measure students' blended learning course experience. A total of 792 undergraduate students from Malaysia participated in this study. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to evaluate the factor structure and establish the validity of the scale. The developed scale showed satisfactory levels of reliability and validity, which have important implications for course designers and instructors.

An evolving international research collaboration network: spatial and thematic developments in co-authored higher education research, 1998-2018

Yuan Chih Fu, Marcelo Marques, Yuen-Hsien Tseng, Justin J. W. Powell, David P. Baker

Summary: Co-authored research articles in the field of higher education have increased significantly in the past two decades. However, this growth has not led to a more diverse network, as existing co-authorship patterns dominated by scholars from a few Anglophone countries have been strengthened. China and Germany are emerging as increasingly influential research-producing countries in this field.

The Go-Lab Platform, an Inquiry-learning Space: Investigation into Students' Technology Acceptance, Knowledge Integration, and Learning Outcomes

Chi-Jung Sui, Hsin-Chueh Chen, Ping-Han Cheng, Chun-Yen Chang

Summary: Through the Go-Lab platform's inquiry-learning space (ILS), we investigated students' technology acceptance, knowledge integration (KI) process, and learning outcomes. The study revealed that students responded positively to the usefulness of the platform, high-achiever KI students constructed complex and diverse links among genetic ideas while low-achiever KI students only built simple links. However, the learning outcomes were similar for both high-achiever and low-achiever KI students.

Filtering objectionable information access based on click-through behaviours with deep learning methods

Lung-Hao Lee, Jian-Hong Li, Szu-Wei Ku, Yuen-Hsien Tseng

Summary: This study uses the click-through behaviour of URLs to predict the category of users' online information accesses and applies the results to filter objectionable accesses during web surfing. The proposed BiLSTM-CRF model achieves promising results with high accuracy and F1-score improvements compared to related approaches. In real-time filtering simulations, the model maintains a high blocking rate and a low false-positive rate.

Identifying mainstreams of contemporary digital reading research: insights from a co-citation network analysis and systematic review

Kai-Yu Tang, Yuen-Hsien Tseng, Yun-Fang Tu

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of contemporary digital reading research, using co-citation network analysis and content analysis to identify key topics, trends, and features. The study identified three mainstreams of digital reading research, namely differences between print books and e-books in reading comprehension, adolescents' habits and preferences in digital reading and their digital reading literacy, and analysis of reading behaviors and use of interactive learning books. Most studies employed quantitative or mixed methods, focusing on evaluation through tests and questionnaires, and did not explore specific application domains or learning strategies. Affective aspects, cognition, learning behavior, and causation were the main focuses of research on digital reading. Key research topics in digital reading included engagement, digital media, and digital literacy. The study provides directions for future research and digital reading education.

Asian Students' Cultural Orientation and Computer Self-Efficacy Significantly Related to Online Inquiry-Based Learning Outcomes on the Go-Lab Platform

Hsin-Chueh Chen, Hannie Gijlers, Chi-Jung Sui, Chun-Yen Chang

Summary: This study investigated the factors associated with the learning outcomes of Taiwanese junior high school students in an online inquiry learning environment. It found that Asian students tend to be tutor-oriented and collectivistic learners. The results revealed that students' collectivistic orientation and computer self-efficacy were positively associated with their learning outcomes. These findings highlight the importance of Asian students' disciplined personality and computer self-efficacy for online inquiry-based learning.

Do they have inquiry skill profiles? Exploring high school students' scientific inquiry in an animation-based activity

Chi-Jung Sui, Sheng-Yi Hsiao, Shih-Chao Yeh, Pingping Zhao, Chun-Yen Chang, Jing Lin

Summary: This study aims to characterize students' inquiry skill profiles and investigate the relationship between students' demographic factors and their inquiry skill profiles. The findings indicate that students can be classified into four types of inquiry skill profiles based on their skills in data analytics, scientific reasoning, and control of variables. School location has a significant impact on students' inquiry profiles, while school type, student major, and household registration have a mildly favorable impact. Recognizing these varied inquiry skill profiles and addressing the disparities stemming from demographic differences are crucial for a more equitable science education environment.
