Interest in uterine NK cell density as a diagnostic or screening tool in reproductive disorders is growing. However, current methods of analysis are time consuming. In this study, 997 images from 100 women were analysed both by the currently used method combining manual and computer aided counting, and by using colour splitting combined with area measurement as an estimate of positively stained cells. Good correlation was found between both methods (r(2) = 0.92) centred around the line of equality, with no systematic differences observed in Bland Altman plots. The area measurement was significantly faster and thus is a useful screening method. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Development of the PREMature Infant Index (PREMII™), a clinician-reported outcome measure assessing functional status of extremely preterm infants

Robert M. Ward, Mark A. Turner, Ingrid Hansen-Pupp, Jason Higginson, Magdalena Vanya, Emuella Flood, Ethan J. Schwartz, Helen A. Doll, Adina Tocoian, Alexandra Mangili, Norman Barton, Sujata P. Sarda

Summary: The study developed the PREMII, an electronic outcome measure for assessing functional status of extremely preterm infants. Through the involvement of physicians and nurses, specific health factors and scoring criteria were identified. The results support the content validity and usability of PREMII.

European research networks to facilitate drug research in children

Mark A. Turner, Katharine Cheng, Saskia de Wildt, Heidrun Hildebrand, Sabah Attar, Paolo Rossi, Donato Bonifazi, Adriana Ceci, Joana Claverol, Begonya Nafria, Carlo Giaquinto

Summary: Paediatric drug development faces barriers from fragmented stakeholders and inconsistent research processes. Recent efforts in Europe have focused on overcoming these barriers, with two exemplar initiatives, the European Paediatric Translational Research Infrastructure and conect4children, which involve listening to the voices of children and their advocates.

A first-in-human clinical study of a new SP-B and SP-C enriched synthetic surfactant (CHF5633) in preterm babies with respiratory distress syndrome: two-year outcomes

David G. Sweet, Mark Turner, Zbynek Stranak, Richard Plavka, Paul Clarke, Ben Stenson, Dominique Singer, Rangmar Goelz, Laura Fabbri, Guido Varoli, Annalisa Piccinno, Debora Santoro, Dorothea Del Buono, Christian P. Speer

Summary: This study assessed the neurological, respiratory, and general health status of premature infants treated with a new synthetic surfactant enriched with SP-B and SP-C proteins at 24 months corrected age. The results showed that the surfactant treatment was not associated with adverse neurodevelopmental, respiratory, or health outcomes by two years of age.

Characterisation of peri-implantation endometrial Treg and identification of an altered phenotype in recurrent pregnancy loss

Ingrid Granne, Mengni Shen, Helena Rodriguez-Caro, Gurmeher Chadha, Elizabeth O'Donnell, Jan J. Brosens, Siobhan Quenby, Tim Child, Jennifer H. Southcombe

Summary: Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL) affects 2-4% of couples, with risk of miscarrying a euploid pregnancy increased by lethal embryonic aneuploidy. Conditions associated with RPL include immune pathologies, with T regulatory cells as strong candidates for dysregulation. Maternal acquired immune memory of pregnancy within the Treg population is indicated by altered endometrial Treg transcriptome in parous women compared to nulliparous.

Summary: Neonatal sepsis, a leading cause of infant mortality, has diverse definitions based on microbiological culture, laboratory tests, and clinical signs. An international consensus-based definition could improve research comparability and clinical outcomes.

Ethnic group and reason for assisted reproductive technology failure analysis of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority registry data from 2017 to 2018

Ian Henderson, Lauren Lacey, Muhammad Ahsan Akhtar, Siobhan Quenby

Summary: This study aimed to understand the risk differences of different assisted reproductive technology (ART) failure types by ethnic group and explore the role of maternal age and suspected etiology as mediators. The study conducted an observational analysis of 48,750 women who underwent ART treatment in the United Kingdom. The results showed that black women had the highest risk of all failure types, while Asian women had an intermediate risk compared to white women. Some of the risks among black women may be mediated by maternal age.

Summary: The International Neonatal Consortium aims to define reference ranges for commonly used laboratory values in neonates, but there is a lack of standardized and complete published information on these values. This hinders treatment comparison, safety monitoring, and clinical management.

Summary: The objective of this study was to develop core outcome sets (COS) for miscarriage management and prevention. Through a modified Delphi survey and consensus development meeting, stakeholders from 15 countries were included. The final COS for miscarriage management and prevention were established, providing important guidance for future randomized trials and systematic reviews.

Fertility preservation, its effectiveness and its impact on disease status in pre-menopausal women with breast cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of fertility preservation strategies in pre-menopausal women with breast cancer. The results showed that fertility preservation interventions were associated with higher fertility outcomes and a reduced rate of disease recurrence. This suggests that fertility preservation is effective in preserving reproductive function and safe with regard to disease recurrence, disease free survival, and overall survival in premenopausal women with breast cancer.
