Summary: The study found that women with CPP have high levels of neuroticism, low extraversion, and low conscientiousness, along with moderate to severe levels of depression, high levels of trait and state anxiety, catastrophizing, and low pain acceptance. These psychological factors are important to consider in developing interventions to improve the clinical course of CPP.

Summary: Difficulties with pain-specific and general emotion regulation have negative impacts on pain outcomes. A study on adults with chronic pain identified four groups with different emotion regulation profiles and found that those with pain-specific and general ER difficulties had the worst outcomes. The findings highlight the importance of individualizing pain psychology treatment based on emotion regulation strengths and difficulties.

Summary: The study suggests that pain catastrophizing and mindfulness are important intervention targets to enhance emotional functioning for chronic pain patients, and should be considered simultaneously in interventions.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the COVID-19 pandemic can negatively impact individuals with chronic pain, although the actual effects are relatively small. Interventions that focus on improving pain acceptance may help individuals with chronic pain be resilient during the pandemic.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between pain catastrophizing and comorbidity of major depressive disorder (MDD) and chronic pain (CP). The results showed that pain catastrophizing and anxiety were more severe in the comorbidity group compared to the MDD-only group and healthy control group. Pain catastrophizing and anxiety may potentially impact the comorbidity of depression and chronic pain.

Summary: The study suggests that interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation programs (IPRPs) can effectively improve depressive symptoms by increasing pain self-efficacy and reducing a sense of helplessness. Both individual and group formats of IPRP demonstrated significant treatment effects, providing evidence for the treatment mechanisms in IPRP.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between the core processes of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and anxiety and stress in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). The results demonstrated that the core processes of ACT accounted for a considerable amount of variance in anxiety and stress in individuals with SCI. Active engagement in acceptance, pursuit of values, and defusion were associated with lower levels of anxiety and stress.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the relationship between pain intensity, catastrophizing components, depression, and disability in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). The results showed that age, pain intensity, catastrophizing, and depression can predict the disability level in CLBP patients.

Summary: This study examined the associations between central sensitization and various factors in patients with chronic shoulder pain. The results showed that catastrophizing, depression, and functionality were predictive factors for central sensitization symptoms. Patients classified as centrally sensitized had worse functionality, psychological factors, and pain intensity.

Summary: This study examined the efficacy of internet-delivered cognitive and behavioural interventions for adults with chronic pain and found small effect sizes for various pain management outcomes. The results suggest that guided interventions are associated with greater clinical gains, particularly in terms of interference/disability, anxiety, and pain intensity. The use of inactive control trials also showed greater effects for depression.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of SCI-related pain during initial inpatient rehabilitation and explore their relationships with demographic and lesion characteristics. The results showed that SCI-related pain was highly prevalent during inpatient rehabilitation and different factors such as sex, age, and type of injury were associated with the presence of pain.

Summary: Surf therapy is a novel intervention that may provide tangible benefits to address the increasing prevalence rates of mental health problems among adolescents. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of a surf therapy program on mental health outcomes in at-risk Australian youth, with results indicating positive changes in resilience, self-esteem, social connectedness, and depressive symptoms post-intervention. Despite improvements not being maintained at follow-up, the study provides preliminary evidence of the efficacy of surf therapy among Australian youth.
