Scale Banking for Patient-Reported Outcome Measures That Measure Functioning in Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Daily Activities Metric

Birgit Prodinger, Michaela Coenen, Alison Hammond, Ayse A. Kucukdeveci, Alan Tennant

Summary: This study aimed to standardize the reporting of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for measuring functioning in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), allowing for direct comparisons between different PROMs. By using a common scale and developing a transformation table, the scores of various PROMs can now be compared and exchanged.

Quality of Life in Osteoarthritis: Relationship with Demographic and Clinical Variables

Secilay Gunes, Beyza Doganay Erdogan, Sehim Kutlay, Ayse Adile Kucukdeveci

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between quality of life (QoL) and demographic and clinical variables in patients with osteoarthritis (OA). The results showed that pain, physical function, fatigue, and social isolation were predictors of QoL in this patient group, explaining 64.5% of the variance.

Summary: To facilitate the interaction between health professionals and patients, a framework for the rehabilitation process is needed. This framework includes a rehabilitation management plan, Individual Rehabilitation Project (IRP), and rehabilitation cycle(s). The IRP focuses on optimizing a patient's functioning across the continuum of care and is provided by a multi-professional team led by a physical and rehabilitation medicine physician.

Trust/untrust is not the same as true/false. Lessons learned and ethical questions on the application of untrustworthiness scales to judge individuals

Stefano Negrini, Maria G. Ceravolo, Giorgio Ferriero

Summary: This paper reflects on the importance of trustworthiness in scientific medical journals and its impact on various communities. It discusses the implications of false research results, the need for trust in science and medicine, the challenges in judging trustworthiness, the limitations of the peer review system, and the emerging ethical issues. The paper concludes with suggestions for prevention at the system level.

Overview of Cochrane Systematic Reviews of rehabilitation interventions for persons with rheumatoid arthritis: a mapping synthesis

Ayse A. Kucukdeveci, Burak K. Turan, Chiara Arienti, Stefano Negrini

Summary: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of Cochrane Systematic Reviews (CSRs) on rehabilitation interventions for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The study found that physical activity and exercises are effective non-pharmacological interventions for hand function, muscle strength, and fatigue in RA patients. Psychosocial interventions show a small beneficial effect on fatigue. Celecoxib has similar analgesic effects with traditional NSAIDs but fewer gastric adverse events. There is a need for well-designed studies to determine the effects of these interventions on different outcomes and physiological mechanisms in RA.

Application of the Rasch measurement model in rehabilitation research and practice: early developments, current practice, and future challenges

Alan Tennant, Ayse A. A. Kucukdeveci

Summary: The application of the Rasch measurement model in rehabilitation has been widely recognized. Its dichotomous and polytomous forms enable the transformation of ordinal scales into interval-level measures, meeting the requirements of fundamental measurement. Over the past 30 years, the application of the model in rehabilitation has grown, with the protocol being steadily improved and several software packages and the R language providing analysis capabilities. This article reviews the development of the Rasch model in rehabilitation, highlights current practice requirements, and provides a worked example, while also discussing remaining issues and current developments in its application.
