Design of Paper-Based Visual Analogue Scale Items

Summary: The study investigated the preferred design characteristics of paper-based visual analogue scale (VAS) items among women and men. Both genders showed a preference for a horizontal, 8-cm long, 3 DTP wide, black line, with flat line endpoints, and ascending numerical anchors 0 and 10. The study did not find any gender differences in these design characteristics, but uncovered clear preferences in designing paper-based VAS items.

Use of the visual analogue scale for health state valuation: a scoping review

Summary: This scoping review aims to describe how the visual analogue scale (VAS) has been used for health state valuation in the published literature. The search yielded 308 included articles, and 83% of them used VAS to value health states. The most common perspectives were hypothetical (44%) and own health (34%). The design of the VAS varied greatly, making comparison of results across studies challenging.

Visual Analogue Scale Cut-off Point of Seven Represents Poor Quality of Life in Patients with Endometriosis

Translation and validation of a Swedish version of the Visual Vertigo Analogue Scale

Summary: The purpose of this study was to construct and validate a Swedish translation (VVAS-S) of the Visual Vertigo Analogue Scale (VVAS). The translation process involved two authors translating the original English version into Swedish, which was then back-translated by an independent professional translator. The translated version was found to be comparable to the original in terms of internal reliability and was perceived as easy to implement by participants, making it suitable for clinical use in a Swedish-speaking setting.

Stability analysis of clustering of Norris' visual analogue scale Applying the consensus clustering approach

The Use of Visual Analogue Scale Score as a Predicting Tool in Differentiating Renal Colic From Lumbar Back Pain

Summary: This study aimed to predict the presence of stones in patients with flank pain using the visual analogue scale (VAS) questionnaire during the first admission. Results showed that the possibility of renal colic increased by 5.4 times per one-unit increase in the VAS score. A VAS score of 4.5 could diagnose renal colic with 88% sensitivity and 71% specificity.

Quality of Life in Osteoarthritis: Relationship with Demographic and Clinical Variables

Overview of Cochrane Systematic Reviews of rehabilitation interventions for persons with rheumatoid arthritis: a mapping synthesis

Summary: The aim of this study was to provide an overview of Cochrane Systematic Reviews (CSRs) on rehabilitation interventions for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The study found that physical activity and exercises are effective non-pharmacological interventions for hand function, muscle strength, and fatigue in RA patients. Psychosocial interventions show a small beneficial effect on fatigue. Celecoxib has similar analgesic effects with traditional NSAIDs but fewer gastric adverse events. There is a need for well-designed studies to determine the effects of these interventions on different outcomes and physiological mechanisms in RA.

Application of the Rasch measurement model in rehabilitation research and practice: early developments, current practice, and future challenges

Summary: The application of the Rasch measurement model in rehabilitation has been widely recognized. Its dichotomous and polytomous forms enable the transformation of ordinal scales into interval-level measures, meeting the requirements of fundamental measurement. Over the past 30 years, the application of the model in rehabilitation has grown, with the protocol being steadily improved and several software packages and the R language providing analysis capabilities. This article reviews the development of the Rasch model in rehabilitation, highlights current practice requirements, and provides a worked example, while also discussing remaining issues and current developments in its application.
