Summary: This cross-sectional study found that there is an association between non-disordered cannabis use (NDCU) and adverse psychosocial events among adolescents. Individuals with NDCU had approximately 2 to 4 times greater odds of experiencing adverse psychosocial events compared to non-users, including major depression, suicidal ideation, slower thoughts, difficulty concentrating, truancy, low grade point average, arrest, fighting, and aggression. This study highlights the negative impact of non-clinical cannabis use on the mental health of adolescents.

Summary: This study investigated the association between genome-wide DNA methylation and lifetime cannabis use. The results showed that there were four CpG sites significantly associated with lifetime cannabis use, and one CpG site was also associated with participants who never smoked cigarettes. The study also identified the best model that can explain the variation in lifetime cannabis use, and revealed potential DNA methylation changes related to the health impact of cannabis.

Summary: Among adolescent SUD patients, MDMA use in addition to cannabis use is associated with APS, while cannabis use is not related to APS. Cannabis may increase the risk for psychosis after a longer period of use and in combination with other risk factors, such as trauma history. Clinicians should screen for APS among SUD patients using MDMA and cannabis in order to adapt treatment plans of SUDs.

Summary: This diagnostic study found that the SIS-C performs excellently as a screening tool for CUD in routine care, with high negative predictive values accurately identifying patients without CUD. However, low positive predictive values indicate a need for further diagnostic assessment following positive results when screening for CUD in primary care.

Summary: The study found that cross-commodity discounting between money, alcohol, and cannabis was significantly associated with patterns of harmful alcohol and cannabis use, while single-commodity discounting showed no associations. People who reported using tobacco cigarettes in addition to alcohol and cannabis were more likely to engage in harmful alcohol and cannabis use.

Summary: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with psychotic experiences (PE), especially among patients with substance use disorder (SUD). Early exposure to ACEs is a risk factor for later PE in SUD patients, and the type and timing of ACEs play important roles in the development of PE.

Summary: There has been a global increase in the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems, cannabis, and prescription drugs among adolescents, which are collectively called ECPO. The nature of ECPO use makes it difficult to detect, posing challenges for screening, prevention, and intervention. This article reviews empirical data on the effects of ECPO use in adolescents and provides concrete approaches for screening and intervention.

Summary: This study investigates the association between cognitive reappraisal and panic disorder (PD), and finds that PD patients have weakened functional connectivity between the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the amygdala, which is associated with the severity of PD symptoms. Additionally, cognitive reappraisal is negatively correlated with PD severity, and the PFC-amygdala functional connectivity plays a mediating role in this association.

Summary: Depression and anxiety are prevalent mental disorders among adolescents. The study utilized network analysis to examine the symptom dimension of depression and anxiety in different age groups of adolescents. The results indicated that different age groups have different key symptoms and bridging symptoms, highlighting the importance of targeting specific symptoms at different stages of adolescence in treatment to alleviate the comorbidity of anxiety and depression.

Summary: Screening for psychological distress in adolescents is important, and the Distress Questionnaire-5 (DQ5) is a reliable measure for this purpose. The study found that DQ5 had good fit to a unidimensional construct, strong criterion and predictive validity, and sensitivity to change. The brevity and ease of interpretation of DQ5 make it suitable for screening in schools.

Summary: Major depressive disorder is a prevalent condition worldwide, but the proportion of patients receiving treatment has not increased. Biomarkers related to drug-treatment responses can be used to monitor the effectiveness of medication. Serum protein levels were compared among patients with depression who received medication, those who did not, and a control group. Eight biomarkers were identified, which can be used to monitor the effectiveness of drug treatment.
