Drought is one of the most serious environmental limitations for poplar growth. Although the ways in which plants deal with water stress and the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) formation have been well documented, little is known about how the male and female plants of Populus cathayana respond to drought and AM formation. We also aimed to investigate the potential role of AM fungi in maintaining gender balance. We tested the impact of drought and AM formation on water status and photosynthesis. The results suggested that both sexes showed similar responses to water stress: drought decreased the growth of stem length (GSL), growth of ground diameter (GGD), relative water content (RWC), increased the relative electrolyte leakage (REL), and limited the photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence indexes. However, the responses of the two sexes to drought and AM formation differed to some extent. AM formation had positive effects on RWC, photosynthesis and the intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) but negative effects on the REL of males and females, especially under drought. AM formation enhanced the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) (Fv/Fm), the actual quantum yield of PSII (phi PSII), non-photochemical quenching (qN) and photochemical quenching (qP) under drought conditions, and had no significant effects under well-watered conditions except on the qP of males. Principal component analysis showed that males were significantly more drought tolerant than females, and AM formation enhanced drought tolerance, particularly among males, which suggested that AM fungi are beneficial for ecological stability and for P. cathayana survival under drought conditions.

Transcriptome Analysis of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Casuarina glauca in Damage Mitigation of Roots on NaCl Stress

Yihan Wang, Fengxin Dong, Ming Tang

Summary: This study revealed the effect of Rhizophagus irregularis on gene expression in the roots of Casuarina glauca under salt stress. The results showed that inoculation promoted plant growth, regulated ion balance, and changed the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Transcriptome analysis identified differentially expressed genes affected by both R. irregularis inoculation and NaCl stress.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal colonization improves growth, photosynthesis, and ROS regulation of split-root poplar under drought stress

Haoqiang Zhang, Li Li, Wei Ren, Wenrui Zhang, Ming Tang, Hui Chen

Summary: The study found that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can improve the tolerance of hybrid poplar against drought stress by increasing biomass accumulation, photosynthesis, and regulation of reactive oxygen species. The beneficial effect is greater when the fungi are inoculated in both compartments compared to only one compartment. This effect may be attributed to improved phosphorus uptake and water uptake modulation in colonized root-system parts.

LbAMT3-1, an ammonium transporter induced by arbuscular mycorrhizal in Lycium barbarum, confers tobacco with higher mycorrhizal levels and nutrient uptake

Kang Cheng, Man Wei, Xiaoxia Jin, Ming Tang, Haoqiang Zhang

Summary: This study investigated the effects of overexpression of the ammonium transporter LbAMT3-1 on nutrient uptake and plant productivity. The results showed that LbAMT3-1 overexpression can enhance the absorption of nutrients and increase the abundance of mycorrhizal in plants. This study provides a potential strategy for using LbAMT3-1 in breeding programs to improve nutrient uptake in plants.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Enhanced Drought Resistance of Populus cathayana by Regulating the 14-3-3 Family Protein Genes

Yanyan Han, Xiao Lou, Wenrui Zhang, Tingying Xu, Ming Tang

Summary: Thirteen 14-3-3 protein genes were expressed in the symbiosis between Populus cathayana and AMF. Among them, the expression of PcGRF10 and PcGRF11 induced by AMF was significantly positively correlated with antioxidant and osmotic regulation. This provides new insights into the impact of AMF symbiosis on stress through 14-3-3 proteins.

Changes in Rhizosphere Soil Fungal Communities of Pinus tabuliformis Plantations at Different Development Stages on the Loess Plateau

Jiaxing Wang, Jing Gao, Haoqiang Zhang, Ming Tang

Summary: The soil fungal community plays a crucial role in the maintenance and sustainable development of forest ecosystems. This study analyzed soil environmental changes and the composition of the soil fungal community at different stand ages in Pinus tabuliformis plantations. The results showed that the content of available phosphorus (AP) in the soil significantly affected the community composition of soil fungi and influenced the degradation of the plantations.

Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and phosphorus on drought-induced oxidative stress and 14-3-3 proteins gene expression of Populus cathayana

Yanyan Han, Wenrui Zhang, Tingying Xu, Ming Tang

Summary: The application of AM fungi and phosphorus can improve plant growth under drought stress by upregulating the antioxidant system and osmotic accumulation. Inoculation of AM fungi significantly increased P content and enzyme activities in plants. AM fungi also enhanced the antioxidant activities under drought condition. 14-3-3 genes play a crucial role in antioxidant system, osmotic regulation, and P metabolism.

Identification and functional characterization of the sulfakinin and sulfakinin receptor in the Chinese white pine beetle Dendroctonus armandi

Bin Liu, Danyang Fu, Hang Ning, Ming Tang, Hui Chen

Summary: The sulfakinin (SK) signaling pathway plays a positive and significant role in feeding regulation in the Chinese white pine beetle, Dendroctonus armandi. The expression levels of SK and SKR genes vary between male and female adults, as well as different developmental stages, tissues, and starvation/re-feeding states. Targeting the SK pathway could provide a potential molecular target for pest control.

Summary: In recent years, an outbreak of bark beetles in China has caused significant mortality of a specific type of poplar tree, leading to changes in soil properties and fungal communities. The findings suggest that these disturbances will have important implications for the future restoration of forest ecology in the area.
