Summary: The influence of operating temperature on the Cr poisoning effect on the cathode of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) was comprehensively studied. It was found that operating at 650 degrees C resulted in the most serious degradation. At lower temperatures, the degradation rate increased with higher operating temperatures, while at higher temperatures, the degradation rate slowed down with higher operating temperatures. By combining experimental results with first principles calculations, it was determined that the competition between the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and the formation reaction of SrCrO4 played a role in the fluctuating degradation rate of the cathode.

Summary: The study revealed that sulfur poisoning can occur in cathode materials even without alkali earth components. Sulfur readily reacts with La2O3 in the cathode material to form La2O2SO4 at different temperatures, highlighting the temperature dependency of the chemical reaction. This prompts the exploration of new materials and strategies for developing cathode materials with high sulfur tolerance.

Summary: In this study, a facile and scalable urea assisted ultrasonic spray infiltration technique was proposed for the nanofabrication of durable nanostructured solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes. The technique eliminates the need for high temperature calcination cycles and allows for faster fabrication of the cathodes. The results showed that the urea assisted infiltration combined with ultrasonic spray technique can be scaled up for any desired cathode area and lead to highly durable SOFC performance.

Summary: Mixed ionic and electronic conduction in composite cathode enhances electrocatalytic functionalities for oxygen reduction reaction at low temperatures. A CoGd0.8Fe1.80O4 /Gd0.10Ce0.9O2-delta (CGFO-GDC) composite cathode demonstrates low electrode polarization resistance of 0.60 omega cm2 at 550 degrees C and peak power density of 611-343 mW cm-2 at 550-470 degrees C under fuel cell conditions. The introduction of ionic conducting GDC into CGFO sample improves catalytic functionalities and delivers a minimum electrode polarization resistance with enhanced power output at 550 degrees C.

Summary: Improvements in the microstructure of the cathode layer are necessary for high performance in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells. Cobalt-free cathode materials are being used due to the drawbacks of cobalt-containing cathodes. Electrospray deposition (ESD) method is used in this study to develop a cobalt-free cathode layer, and gadolinium-doped ceria is used as the electrolyte layer. The optimized microstructure through statistical experimental design methods showed higher electrochemical performance compared to other methods.

Summary: This study evaluates the electrochemical performance of SCT10 cathodes in the presence of Cr impurities. The results demonstrate that Cr impurities lead to significant performance degradation, especially in wet conditions. Morphological damages and the formation of SrCrO4 and Co3O4 secondary phases on the cathode surface contribute to the deterioration of oxygen reduction kinetics and cathode activity. The study highlights the importance of surface Sr segregation in Cr deposition and emphasizes the need for attention in practical applications in solid oxide fuel cells.

Summary: The precipitation behavior of intermetallic compounds, such as C14 Laves phase and Chi phase, and oxidation behavior of an Fe-20Cr-0.5Nb-2Mo high-Cr ferritic alloy were investigated at high temperatures. The formation of protective Cr2O3 and Laves precipitates on the surface was observed during aging/oxidation heat treatment. The precipitation of Chi phase, which is not supposed to be formed, was also observed at the alpha/Cr2O3 interfaces. In the long-term oxidation, the coarsening of the Chi precipitates resulted in localized stress concentrations and abnormal Cr2O3 formation, accelerating the growth of surface Cr2O3.

Summary: The effect of Si and Be barrier layers on the intermixing of thin Cr and Sc layers was investigated using XPS, TEM, XRR, and GIXRD. It was found that annealing of the Si/[Cr/Sc]200 system increased mixing, resulting in the segregation of scandium on the sample surface. The insertion of the Be barrier layer limited intermixing at temperatures up to 350 degrees C, but full degradation occurred at 450 degrees C. In the Cr/Sc system, the Be barrier layer prevented texturing and grain growth, while the silicon layer restricted intermixing, preserving an amorphous structure.

Summary: In this paper, the authors study the characteristics of chromium evaporation, oxide scale growth, and deposition of chromium on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on (La,Sr)MnO3 (LSM) cathode in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. The results indicate that the volatilization of chromium is influenced by the composition and morphology of the oxide scale, and the deposition of chromium on the LSM cathode degrades the electrochemical activity of the ORR. These findings provide insights into the mechanism of chromium poisoning in intermediate-temperature conditions.

Summary: This article presents the results of a systematic study on the electrochemical performance and mechanical changes in two types of commercial batteries with different anode chemistry. The study reveals that the swelling of anode layers in batteries with silicon-based components causes deformations in the jelly roll structure, but the presence of a small percentage of silicon does not significantly impact the cycling performance of the cells within the relevant state-of-health range for electric vehicles (EVs). The research suggests that there is room for improving the cell capacities by increasing the silicon loading in composite anodes to meet the increasing demands on EVs.

Summary: An efficient phase inversion-impregnation approach is developed to fabricate BaO-decorated Ni8 mol% YSZ anode-supported tubular solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with anti-coking properties. BaO nanoislands are successfully introduced inside the Ni-YSZ anode, leading to higher peak power densities and improved stability in methane fuel. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the loading of BaO nanoislands facilitates carbon elimination by capturing and dissociating H2O molecules to generate OH.

Summary: By coupling electrochemical testing to operando synchrotron based X-ray absorption and powder diffraction experiments, blended positive electrodes consisting of LiMn2O4 spinel (LMO) and layered LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 (NMC) were studied to understand their redox mechanism. It was found that blending NMC with LMO can enhance energy density at high rates, with the blend containing 25% LMO showing the best performance. Testing with a special electrochemical setup revealed that the effective current load on each blend component can vary significantly from the nominal rate and also changes with SoC. Operando studies allowed monitoring of the oxidation state evolution and changes in crystal structure, in line with the expected behavior of individual components considering their electrochemical current loads.
