Summary: This study evaluates the electrochemical performance of SCT10 cathodes in the presence of Cr impurities. The results demonstrate that Cr impurities lead to significant performance degradation, especially in wet conditions. Morphological damages and the formation of SrCrO4 and Co3O4 secondary phases on the cathode surface contribute to the deterioration of oxygen reduction kinetics and cathode activity. The study highlights the importance of surface Sr segregation in Cr deposition and emphasizes the need for attention in practical applications in solid oxide fuel cells.

Summary: Here, we report a highly conductive, robust, and innovative Gd and Pr multi-doped ceria (GPDC) coating to enhance the ORR kinetics and stability against Cr poisoning of the state-of-the-art LSCF cathode. The GPDC coating significantly improves the ORR kinetics by improving the surface of the LSCF cathode and shows a two-fold increase in electrochemical performance compared to the bare LSCF cathode. It also exhibits outstanding stability in an accelerated Cr poisoning test, attributed to the alleviation of SrCrO4 formation. Both relaxation time-based analysis and experimental results confirm that the GPDC coating enhances the ORR activity and Cr tolerance of the LSCF cathode.

Summary: The study found that in a solid oxide fuel cell-gas turbine hybrid system, higher fuel utilization factors and pressure ratios increase the air flow requirement to maintain acceptable temperature differences and thermal gradients. The highest efficiency is achieved at higher operating voltage, moderate pressure ratio, and moderate fuel utilization, while the lowest cost of electricity is obtained at lower operating voltage, the same pressure ratio, and lower fuel utilization.

Summary: This review summarizes various types of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and describes their structural features, advantages, and disadvantages. Among the well-studied dual-chamber SOFC, those with anode-supported design and oxygen-ion conducting electrolyte are found to be the most suitable for operation at temperatures below 800 degrees C. Other promising types for low-temperature operation include SOFC with proton-conducting electrolyte and electrolyte-free fuel cells, although further research and development are needed for commercialization.

Summary: In this study, a facile and scalable urea assisted ultrasonic spray infiltration technique was proposed for the nanofabrication of durable nanostructured solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes. The technique eliminates the need for high temperature calcination cycles and allows for faster fabrication of the cathodes. The results showed that the urea assisted infiltration combined with ultrasonic spray technique can be scaled up for any desired cathode area and lead to highly durable SOFC performance.

Summary: This article presents the results of a systematic study on the electrochemical performance and mechanical changes in two types of commercial batteries with different anode chemistry. The study reveals that the swelling of anode layers in batteries with silicon-based components causes deformations in the jelly roll structure, but the presence of a small percentage of silicon does not significantly impact the cycling performance of the cells within the relevant state-of-health range for electric vehicles (EVs). The research suggests that there is room for improving the cell capacities by increasing the silicon loading in composite anodes to meet the increasing demands on EVs.

Summary: By coupling electrochemical testing to operando synchrotron based X-ray absorption and powder diffraction experiments, blended positive electrodes consisting of LiMn2O4 spinel (LMO) and layered LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 (NMC) were studied to understand their redox mechanism. It was found that blending NMC with LMO can enhance energy density at high rates, with the blend containing 25% LMO showing the best performance. Testing with a special electrochemical setup revealed that the effective current load on each blend component can vary significantly from the nominal rate and also changes with SoC. Operando studies allowed monitoring of the oxidation state evolution and changes in crystal structure, in line with the expected behavior of individual components considering their electrochemical current loads.
