The experiment was conducted on a farmer's field near Bhavnagar (Gujarat, India) during the Rabi season of 20082009 to study the effect of foliar applications of Kappaphycus alvarezii and Gracilaria edulis sap on growth and yield response of wheat var. GW 496. Three foliar sprays of both saps were applied at the rate of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0% (v/v) along with water as a control at different stages of the crop. It was found that yield of grain was increased significantly by 19.74% and 13.16% for plants receiving 7.5% and 5.0% concentrations of K. alvarezii and G. edulis sap, respectively, over control. The increase in yield was attributed to increases in the number of spike, spike weight, spike length and 100 seed weight. Foliar applications of K. alvarezii sap at 7.5% increased nutrient contents in grains from 7.91% (K) 31.82% (S) whereas G. edulis sap increased nutrient content 5.72% (N) 37.54% (Mg).

Marine bacterial biodegradation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic

Shrikant D. Khandare, Doongar R. Chaudhary, Bhavanath Jha

Summary: This study isolated four bacterial strains from the marine environment capable of degrading LDPE. The bacteria were able to form biofilms on the LDPE surface and reduce the thermal stability of the films. Results showed changes in the physical and chemical structure of the LDPE film, confirming its biodegradation potential.

Summary: The study examined the changes in phenological parameters, biomass, nutrient contents, and pools of Salicornia brachiata at various stages. It found significant variations in plant height, water content, and nutrient accumulation at different growth stages, with the senescence start stage showing the highest biomass and nutrient levels. The results suggest that S. brachiata can be utilized for coastal development and soil rehabilitation in India.

Sediment microbial community structure, enzymatic activities and functional gene abundance in the coastal hypersaline habitats

Doongar R. Chaudhary, Madhav Kumar, Vandana Kalla

Summary: Salt marsh vegetation, mudflat and salt production are common features in coastal areas. However, their influence on microbial community composition and structure has been poorly studied. This study investigated microbial community composition, enzymatic activities, and abundance of functional genes in different sediments. The results showed that enzyme activities were significantly decreased in saltpan sediments due to high salinity, while sediment of vegetated mudflat had the highest enzyme activities. The microbial community composition and structure varied among different sediment types. The study expands our understanding of microbial adaptations in hypersaline environments.

Summary: The introduction of Phragmites has led to changes in soil microbial community composition in Suncheon Bay, Republic of Korea. The water content, pH, and dissolved organic carbon content in the soil increased. The abundance of certain microbial biomarkers was higher in Phragmites-vegetated marshes compared to other salt marshes.

Surface-associated bacterial assemblages on marine anthropogenic litter in the intertidal zone of the Arabian Sea, India

Madhav Kumar, Doongar R. Chaudhary, Bhavanath Jha

Summary: Anthropogenic marine litter, particularly plastic pollution, is a global issue. This study investigated the bacterial community composition on marine litter using both culturable and nonculturable approaches. The results revealed diverse bacterial assemblages dominated by Proteobacteria phyla and identified hydrocarbon-degrading and pathogenic bacteria on the surfaces. This study contributes to our understanding of the plastisphere community.

Summary: In this study, Vibrio sp. was isolated from the marine environment, which showed the capability of decolorizing trypan blue dye. The decolorization rate reached 90.33% in 6 days at a dye concentration of 500 mg/L. The results demonstrated that Vibrio sp. is well adapted to degrade trypan blue dye and can reduce dye load in industrial effluent.

Summary: This study investigated the nutrient requirements and effects of fertilization on the soil properties and growth status of Erythropalum scandens seedlings through a series of pot experiments. The results revealed that E. scandens seedlings have a stronger sensitivity to nitrogen levels, and excessive fertilization can lead to soil acidification. Proper fertilization treatments can promote better growth status of the seedlings.

Effects of peat based substrate combinations on mineral nutrition, growth and yield of tomato

Ibrahim Erdal, Hakan Aktas, Cennet Yaylaci, Sevkiye Armagan Turkan, Gulnur Aydin, Yunus Hor

Summary: The study examined the effects of growth media made of peat and different domestic materials on tomato nutrition, growth, and yield as an alternative to cocopeat in Turkiye. It was found that using vermicompost and its mixtures with peat as growth media resulted in the highest leaf and fruit nutrient concentrations. The highest fruit yields and biomass weights were obtained with solely peat and 1:1 peat + vermicompost medium. Peat-containing growth media, especially peat + vermicompost mixtures, can be used as alternatives to cocopeat in soilless tomato cultivation.
