Plant growth promoting effects of Bacillus subtilis EY2, Bacillus atrophaeus EY6, Bacillus spharicus GC subgroup B EY30, Staphylococcus kloosii EY37 and Kocuria erythromyxa EY43 were tested on strawberry cv. 'Fern' in terms of fruit yield, growth, chlorophyll reading value, leaf relative water content (LRWC), membrane permeability and ionic composition of leaves and roots under saline conditions. Compared with 0 mM sodium chloride (NaCl) treatment, the average decrease of yield and LRWC were 51.6% and 21.0%, respectively, when 35 mM NaCl was applied. However, EY30, EY37, and EY43 treatments under saline condition (35 mM NaCl) significantly increased fruit yield (54.4%, 51.7% and 94.9%) compared with 35 mM NaCl treatment without plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB). The LRWC increased from 72.0% in 35 mM NaCl treatment to 88.4%, 86.6%, 84.2%, 83.5%, and 86.2% by EY2, EY6, EY30, EY37, and EY43 applications, respectively. The lowest membrane permeability among the bacterial strains was obtained from EY37 treatment (37) while it was 33 and 58 in 0 mM NaCl and 35 mM NaCl treatments, respectively. The concentration of all plant tissue nutrients investigated [nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg)] with the exception of root phosphorus (P) and Mg concentration significantly decreased with 35 mM salt treatment. Nitrogen content of leaves varied between 3.04 and 3.14% in bacterial treatments under saline conditions while it was 2.71% in 35 mM NaCl treatment. In contrast sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) of leaves and Cl content of roots were significantly decreased by root inoculation with all bacterial treatments in comparison to 35 mM NaCl treatment with no inoculation. Treatment with Bacillus EY30, Staphylococcus EY37 and Kocuria EY43 to strawberry plants can ameliorative the deleterious effect of salt stress on fruit yield, growth and nutrition. These results demonstrate that PGPB treatment could be offer an economic and simple means to increased plant resistance for salinity stress.

Mitigation of salinity stress in cucumber seedlings by exogenous hydrogen sulfide

Metin Turan, Melek Ekinci, Raziye Kul, Fatma G. Boynueyri, Ertan Yildirim

Summary: This research demonstrates that tolerance of cucumber seedlings to salt stress can be increased by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) treatments. H2S treatments mitigate the negative effects of salt stress on plant growth properties and chlorophyll content, reduce membrane permeability and increase leaf relative water content. Furthermore, H2S treatments improve photosynthetic properties and ion balance, suppress reactive oxygen species formation, and modulate antioxidant enzyme activity and osmolyte accumulation.

Karrikinolide stimulated seed germination of artificially aged marrow, cabbage and pepper seeds through repair of cell structure and enzyme activity

Z. Gokdas, E. Yildirim, S. Gupta, I. Demir

Summary: The aging process reduces seed vigor and viability. This study investigated the effects of karrikinolide (KAR1) and hydropriming on the germination and repair mechanism of unaged and artificially aged pepper, marrow, and cabbage seeds. The results showed that KAR1 treatment improved germination, reduced electrical conductivity and potassium leakage, and increased the fresh and dry weights of seedlings. This suggests that KAR1 application can enhance the performance of aged seeds in germination.

Physiological, Morphological and Biochemical Responses of Exogenous Hydrogen Sulfide in Salt-Stressed Tomato Seedlings

Ertan Yildirim, Melek Ekinci, Metin Turan, Selda Ors, Atilla Dursun

Summary: Salinity causes significant yield and quality losses in agricultural production, leading to major economic losses worldwide. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a crucial role in alleviating physiological and metabolic processes in plants, increasing tolerance to abiotic stress conditions. A study examined the effects of H2S treatments on tomato seedlings to mitigate the harmful effects of salt stress. The results showed that H2S treatment increased stress tolerance in tomato seedlings by regulating mineral element and hormone content, as well as enhancing photosynthetic activity.

Biosynthesis of capsaicinoids in pungent peppers under salinity stress

Mostafakamal Shams, Esra Arslan Yuksel, Guleray Agar, Melek Ekinci, Raziye Kul, Metin Turan, Ertan Yildirim

Summary: The mechanism of capsaicinoids' biosynthesis under salinity stress in pungent peppers was investigated by growing Habanero and Maras genotypes under normal and salinity conditions. Salinity stress harmed plant growth but increased the capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin contents in the fruits. Overexpression of the PAL1, pAMT, and PUN1 genes in the roots, along with increased capsaicinoid contents, were observed under salinity stress. The production of capsaicinoids is not limited to the fruits of pungent peppers.

Summary: The study found that the mixture of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can enhance the growth and enzymatic activity of basil plants under salt stress. AMF can increase the leaf number and antioxidant enzyme activity of basil, while reducing the loss of chlorophyll caused by salt stress. Multivariate analyses revealed the significant impact of AMF inoculation on basil yield and enzymatic activity. Therefore, AMF has potential applications in mitigating plant growth issues under salt stress.
