The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of vitamin E supplementation on muscular and oxidative damage, as well as the inflammatory response induced by eccentric exercise (EE) in humans. Twenty-one participants with a mean age of 22.5 +/- 4 years, weight of 68.2 +/- 4.9 kg, and height of 173 +/- 4.3 cm were selected and divided randomly into two groups: supplemented (S) (n = 11) and placebo (P) (n = 10). Fourteen days after starting supplementation, subjects performed EE (three sets until exhaustion with elbow flexion and extension on the Scott bench, 80% 1 RM). Blood samples were collected on days 0, 2, 4, and 7 after EE. Muscle soreness (MS), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and interleukin 10 (IL-10) levels were determined. We measured a significant increase in MS, LDH, lipid peroxidation, and carbonylation in both groups on days 2, 4, and 7 after eccentric contractions (EC). Values of the supplement group were lower than those of the placebo group at 4 and 7 days after EC in all parameters. Both groups showed significantly increased TNF-alpha on the second day and IL-10 concentration on the fourth and seventh days after EE. The results suggest that vitamin E supplementation represents an important factor in the defense against oxidative stress and muscle damage but not against the inflammatory response in humans.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of intra-articular treatment of triamcinolone hexacetonide (TH) associated with gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in osteoarthritis. The results showed that the combined treatment with TH and GNPs can reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, increase anti-inflammatory cytokines, improve oxidative damage in joints, and increase antioxidant levels. Additionally, the combination therapy also increases cartilage thickness and chondrocyte count, preventing the progression of the disease.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Biomarkers can be used as indicators for infection, dysregulated host response, treatment response, and can aid in prognosticating patient risk. Over 250 biomarkers have been identified and evaluated, but none can accurately differentiate between sepsis and sepsis-like syndrome.

Summary: The accuracy of the GCS-P score as a prognostic index for predicting hospital mortality in patients with severe traumatic brain injury was evaluated and compared with a model combining GCS, pupil response, and other prognostic factors. The results show that the GCS-P score can accurately predict the mortality of patients with severe traumatic brain injury.

Neurochemical effects of sepsis on the brain

Tatiana Barichello, Vijayasree V. Giridharan, Carlos Henrique R. Catalao, Cristiane Ritter, Felipe Dal-Pizzol

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening disorder caused by an unregulated immune response to infection. This response triggers a complex process that promotes the production of inflammatory mediators, resulting in the disruption of blood-brain barrier function and the activation of glial cells. These changes lead to sepsis-associated encephalopathy, which can contribute to cognitive deterioration and increased susceptibility to cognitive decline later in life.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of sepsis on behavioural and biochemical responses induced by m-amphetamine. Rats underwent cecal ligation and puncture surgery and were then injected with saline or m-amphetamine. The results showed that sepsis enhanced the behavioural responses to m-amphetamine, induced inflammatory response, and altered neurotrophic factors in the brain.
