Functional chemical micropatterns were fabricated by exploiting the photobleaching of dye-coupled species near methacrylate self-assembled monolayers. Using this approach we have demonstrated that multiple chemistries can be coupled to the monolayer using a standard fluorescence microscope. The surface bound functional groups remain active and patterns with feature sizes down to 3 mu m can be readily achieved with excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Control over the ligand binding density was demonstrated to illustrate the convenient route provided by this platform for fabricating complex spatial gradients in ligand density.

Summary: Force spectroscopy using magnetic tweezers is a powerful method to probe the physical characteristics of single polymers, allowing stretching and twisting of multiple molecules without exposure to damaging radiation. The design of a quadrapolar electromagnetic tweezer capable of manipulating DNA-tethered MyOne paramagnetic beads with forces as high as 15 pN is described as a cost-effective solution, suitable for studying DNA motor enzymes.

Summary: The study revealed that multi-walled carbon nanotubes and nanofibers of different diameters induce varying histopathological changes in vivo. Physicochemical characteristics such as size and agglomeration can predict the toxicity profiles of materials, enabling grouping based on their effects on tissue pathology outcomes.

Oxidant-induced epithelial alarmin pathway mediates lung inflammation and functional decline following ultrafine carbon and ozone inhalation co-exposure

Summary: The study found that co-exposure to air pollution constituents leads to more severe lung inflammation and respiratory function decline, with an imbalance of oxidants playing a key role in the mechanism. Co-exposure also activates the epithelial alarmin-dependent interleukin-13 pathway, resulting in increased mucin and interferon gene expression.

In vivo and in vitro toxicity of a stainless-steel aerosol generated during thermal spray coating

Summary: Thermal spray coating is an industrial process that uses molten metal to create a protective coating on surfaces. In a simulated occupational exposure experiment, it was observed that male rats exposed to stainless steel PMET720 aerosols experienced lung injury, inflammation, and changes in cytokines, which resolved within 7 days. The particles were internalized by alveolar macrophages and their toxicity depended on the dose.

Understanding toxicity associated with boron nitride nanotubes: Review of toxicity studies, exposure assessment at manufacturing facilities, and read-across

Vamsi Kodali, Jenny R. Roberts, Eric Glassford, Ryan Gill, Sherri Friend, Kevin L. Dunn, Aaron Erdely

Summary: The production method of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) can affect its toxicity profile, and understanding the potential pathological implications of this nanomaterial is important. In this review, the factors influencing BNNT toxicity, toxicity findings from in vitro and in vivo studies, and exposure assessment at manufacturing facilities are discussed. The results show that compared to other nanomaterials, BNNT has lower concentrations and poses lower toxicity risks in workplace environments.

Aerosol physicochemical determinants of carbon black and ozone inhalation co-exposure induced pulmonary toxicity

Summary: Air pollution leads to over 7 million premature deaths worldwide. A study using ultrafine carbon black and ozone as a model found that co-exposure to the mixture resulted in significantly greater lung injury and inflammation compared to individual exposures. The enhanced reactivity of the particles in the mixture was responsible for this increase. Lung tissue gene and protein responses could predict the biological effects.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of residuals and impurities on the toxicity of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) by evaluating four samples with different purity levels. The results show that as the purity of BNNTs increases, there is a corresponding increase in cytotoxicity, nuclear factor-KB transcription, and inflammasome activation.
