Summary: Four honeycomb structured oxides Na3M2SbO6 (M = Co, Ni, C, Zn) were prepared and characterized. Na3Co2SbO6 showed the highest activity as a Hydrogen Evolution Catalyst (HEC), while Na3Ni2SbO6 was found to be inefficient. The rate of hydrogen evolution was not correlated with the measured bandgap.

Summary: Atomically dispersed Zn on ZrO2 support in Cu-based catalysts was achieved via double-nozzle flame spray pyrolysis method, showing superiority in methanol selectivity and yield compared to Cu-ZnO interface and isolated ZnO nanoparticles. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that the atomically dispersed Zn species were induced during the reaction due to the strengthened Zn-Zr interaction. This work provides insight into the rational design of unique Zn species and offers a new perspective for exploring complex interactions in multi-component catalysts.

Summary: Water electrolysis for hydrogen production provides a convenient and carbon-free option to regulate the intermittency of renewable energy sources. Efficient catalysts based on noble metals are currently used for large-scale production, but efforts are being made to reduce catalyst usage while maintaining their efficiency. Fundamental studies on catalyst structure, reaction intermediates, and failure modes support these efforts. Synchrotron-based techniques, such as X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption spectroscopies, can provide valuable information during the reaction. This article gives an overview of these techniques and their application to water electrolysis.

Summary: Ternary hybrid composites MFe2O4/PANI/MWCNTs (M = Co2+, Cu2+, Mg2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+) were synthesized using sucrose-assisted auto-combustion route followed by in situ polymerization. The developed composites showed improved thermal stability, high conductivity, and dielectric constants. XRD and FT-IR measurements indicated interaction between the composite components. TEM exhibited the adsorption of MFe2O4 to MWCNTs and their coating with PANI layers. VSM indicated a reduction in magnetization due to the coating of magnetic MFe2O4 with non-magnetic PANI. Electrical properties measurements revealed the significant improvement in conductivity and dielectric constants by incorporating ferrites in the composites.

Summary: In situ x-ray spectroscopies are a powerful tool for studying the electronic structure of the electrode-electrolyte interface, but the design of spectro-electrochemical cells plays a crucial role in determining the measurements and processes that can be studied. It is important to choose the right cell design for the specific process of interest, and understanding the opportunities and limitations of different cell designs through case studies is essential for practical experiments.

Summary: This study reports the structural, vibrational, surface composition, and magnetic properties of MFe2O4 (M = Ni, Co) samples before and after annealing. The results indicate the presence of a spinel structure and an inverse spinel structure in the samples. The saturation magnetization increases systematically with annealing temperature up to 1000 degrees C and then slightly decreases. Moreover, the coercivity values vary within certain ranges for different samples.

Summary: In this study, ferrites nanocrystals were prepared using sucrose auto-combustion method. The formed ferrites exhibited different crystal structures and morphologies, and showed ferromagnetic or paramagnetic properties. The electrical conductivity of the ferrites indicated a semiconductor behavior, with a magnetic phase transition observed in all ferrites except CoFe2O4.

Summary: The surfactants Fe(AOT)(2) and Ni(AOT)(2) were used as precursors in the synthesis of Fe3O4 and NiFe2O4 nanoparticles, with successful ionic substitution confirmed by FTIR and MS results. The controlled size of magnetic nanoparticles was achieved by mixing aqueous surfactant solutions with Fe3+(or Fe2+) in a basic environment, with AOT(-) molecules limiting nanoparticle growth. The use of M(AOT)(2) surfactants as precursors opens up possibilities for synthesizing magnetic nanoparticles with well-defined properties.
