Ultrasmall gadolinium oxide nanoparticles doped with terbium ions were synthesized by the polyol route and characterized as a potentially bifunctional material with both fluorescent and magnetic contrast agent properties. The structural, optical, and magnetic properties of the organic-acid-capped and PEGylated Gd2O3:Tb3+ nanocrystals were studied by HR-TEM, XPS, EDX, IR, PL, and SQUID. The luminescent/fluorescent property of the particles is attributable to the Tb3+ ion located on the crystal lattice of the Gd2O3 host. The paramagnetic behavior of the particles is discussed. Pilot studies investigating the capability of the nanoparticles for fluorescent labeling of living cells and as a MRI contrast agent were also performed. Cells of two cell lines (THP-1 cells and fibroblasts) were incubated with the particles, and intracellular particle distribution was visualized by confocal microscopy. The MRI relaxivity of the PEGylated nanoparticles in water at low Gd concentration was assessed showing a higher T-1 relaxation rate compared to conventional Gd-DTPA chelates and comparable to that of undoped Gd2O3 nanoparticles.

Summary: The combination of cerium sealing and hydrothermal sealing was used to improve the corrosion resistance of the commonly used alloy AA2024-T3. Characterization technologies such as SEM and TEM showed Ce oxide nanoparticles growing throughout the porous structures and closing of the pores with additional HTS treatment. The results from the standardized corrosion test demonstrated an improved corrosion resistance obtained by the utilized chrome-free process.

Summary: This study reports the annealing process of silicide formation facilitated by Eu-doped Gd2O3 nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles decreases the annealing temperature required for oxide removal from the silicon substrate. Nanoparticles are suggested to catalyze oxygen removal and facilitate Eu-based silicide formation.

Summary: A novel core-shell structure CoSnO3@carbon-caged NiCo2O4 nanobox (CNC) is rationally designed in this study to improve the performance of mixed transition metal oxides (MTMOs) as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The unique double hollow structure effectively relieves volume variation, improves conductivity, inhibits aggregations, and enhances ion/electron transfer rates. The rational design of CNC demonstrates improved Li+ storage performances and provides a novel strategy for applying MTMOs in LIBs as anode materials.

Summary: Polyampholytic poly(2-aminoethyl methacrylate-co-sulfopropyl methacrylate) thin films prepared by self-initiated photopolymerization and photografting showed promising potential as an alternative to zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) films for antifouling applications. The films exhibited similar fouling behavior to zwitterionic films, suggesting suitability for high-salinity conditions such as marine or physiological environments.
