Summary: Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) have gained attention for their safety, affordability, and environmental friendliness. However, their practical implementation is hindered by low rate performance, inferior Zn2+ diffusion kinetics, and undesired parasitic reactions. Innovative solutions, particularly using functional polymers, are proposed to address these challenges. This review outlines the recent progress in synthesizing and customizing polymers for aqueous ZIBs, summarizes their implementations into different components, discusses the underlying mechanisms, and proposes possible solutions for incorporating polymers into practical ZIBs.

Summary: As lithium-ion batteries revolutionized the industry with high energy density, the safety concerns of organic electrolytes prompted a re-examination of aqueous electrolytes. With the concept of aqueous lithium-ion batteries revived in the mid-2010s using highly concentrated electrolytes, efforts have been made to understand interfacial stability and make the system viable for practical batteries.

Summary: We connect density fluctuations in liquid water to lengthscale dependent crossover in hydrophobic hydration. Our simulations and model analysis demonstrate the relationship between these fluctuations and the formation of cavities in larger volumes. This has implications for understanding biomolecular interactions and function.

Summary: This study focuses on the removal of hydrocarbon contaminants from oily wastewater. Alpha-cellulose-based aerogels were synthesized and hydrophobic modification was applied to enhance adsorption. Factors such as hydrophobic modification, alpha-cellulose weight percentage, contact time, temperature, and pollutant type were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption capacity was influenced by density, viscosity, and temperature. The adsorption equilibrium time was approximately 8 minutes and the kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. The synthesized adsorbent demonstrated good regeneration performance.

Summary: Investigating the interfacial properties between water and graphene is crucial for various applications due to the influence of the water-carbon interface. The study successfully detected water vapor adsorption on several layer graphene using a lab-made adsorption apparatus. The water-graphene interaction energy increased with increasing water amount, leading to a transformation in water structure and hydrophilic behavior on graphene interfaces.

Summary: The study found that COSANs act as efficient aqueous solubilizers of medium-chain alcohols in their monomeric state. Unlike surfactants, COSANs dissolve through a bi-dimensional anisotropic growth of COSAN/butanol co-assemblies. Additionally, COSANs/2-butanol co-assemblies can efficiently solubilize more hydrophobic compounds, offering new opportunities in many applied fields.

Summary: A triple-functional strategy is proposed to address the key challenges faced by aqueous Zn-ion batteries. By using a polyoxovanadate cluster as a Zn2+ host, the cathode, electrolyte, and metallic Zn anode can be simultaneously stabilized. The Zn//POV battery exhibits excellent cycling stability at high rates.

Summary: In this work, fluorinated polymers with perfluoroalkyl groups and hydrophilic oligo(ethylene glycol) units were designed and synthesized. The elongation of hydrophilic segments and functionalization with perfluoroalkyl end groups decreased the interfacial tension and ability of the polymers to precipitate at the interface. This study suggests that low interfacial tension and strong capability of interfacial precipitation are beneficial to droplet stabilization and honeycomb pattern formation.

Summary: An Mg(OTf)(2)-based aqueous electrolyte is developed to address the issues of high corrosion and low utilization in Mg-air batteries. The electrolyte reduces the contact of the Mg anode with water molecules and forms an MgF2 protective layer. The Mg-air batteries assembled with this electrolyte exhibit high specific capacities and extended resting time compared to batteries with pure NaCl electrolytes.
