For the periodic sphaleron potential in the electroweak theory, we find the one-dimensional time-independent Schrodinger equation with the Chern-Simons number as the coordinate, construct the Bloch wave function and determine the corresponding conducting (pass) band structure. We show that the baryon-lepton number violating processes can take place without the exponential tunneling suppression (at zero temperature) at energies around and above the barrier height (sphaleron energy) at 9.0 TeV. Phenomenologically, probable detection of such processes at the LHC is discussed.

Early-time measure in eternal inflation

Summary: This research explores the possibility of our existence in the early stages of the universe, proposing an early-time measure for vacuum systems that favors short-lived vacua, funneled regions, and small positive vacuum energy. It also draws an analogy to protein folding energy landscapes.

Stability of hairy black holes in shift-symmetric scalar-tensor theories via the effective field theory approach

Justin Khoury, Toshifumi Noumi, Mark Trodden, Sam S. C. Wong

Summary: Shift-symmetric Horndeski theories exhibit a class of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole solutions with time-dependent scalar hair. Lemaitre-type coordinates are used to study the properties of these solutions, where the profile of the Horndeski scalar field is linear in the relevant time coordinate. An effective field theory (EFT) is constructed to understand the stability of hairy black holes in shift-symmetric Horndeski theories and provide constraints for stable black hole solutions. The EFT is analyzed in the decoupling limit to identify potential sources of instability and a complete analysis is performed for odd-parity linear perturbations in spherically symmetric spacetime.

Soft theorems for boosts and other time symmetries

Summary: We derive soft theorems for theories with spontaneously broken time symmetries, such as Lorentz boosts. These theorems involve unequal-time correlation functions with the insertion of a soft Goldstone in the far past. Explicit checks are done for examples like the relativistic superfluid effective theory and the effective field theory of inflation. We discuss how these unequal-time identities can capture information beyond equal-time correlators and when they can be framed as equal-time correlator identities.
