Summary: This study investigates the interactions between anionic amphiphilic triblock polyelectrolytes and surfactants with different charge types for the first time, revealing that surfactants have varying effects on viscosity and surface tension based on their charge type. The presence of the polymer affects the micellization of the surfactant and the shear viscosity of polymer solutions, highlighting the importance of charge type and the role of the associating hydrophobic block in the polyelectrolyte structure on solution behavior.

Summary: The molecular surface properties of zwitterionic polymer coatings play a crucial role in their low fouling properties and effectiveness in concentrated salt solutions. The study showed that the molecular forces between end-grafted poly(sulfobetaine) methacrylate thin films and mica varied with ionic strength, reflecting polymer swelling and increased excluded volume strength of chain segments. These findings have implications for the design of grafted poly(sulfobetaine) as colloidal stabilizers or nonfouling surface coatings.

Summary: The presence of salts in a solution containing weak polyelectrolytes can change their titration behavior and conformations. However, little is known about the changes caused by chemically specific interactions. In this study, we simulated the titration of weak polyacids in the presence of monovalent salts capable of forming c-H-bonds. We found that the interaction between anions and weak polyacids hampers ionization at low pH, but has limited impact at higher pH. Additionally, c-H-bonds reduce the average sizes of polyacids and anion binding is extremely local in nature.

Summary: This study analyzed a series of polyzwitterions with different functional groups and hydrophobicity, investigated their structural features in cell interactions, and identified three types of cell-surface interactions. Human keratinocytes formed focal adhesions on cell-adhesive polyzwitterions, while cells cultured on non-adhesive polyzwitterions showed up-regulated inflammatory and apoptosis-related pathways.

Summary: The study found that nonelectrostatic interactions with a surface have a significant impact on the adsorption of polyelectrolytes, potentially resulting in qualitatively different salt effects than the charge effects. Under certain conditions, the adsorbed polymer layers produce a long-range repulsive barrier that can overcome dispersive interactions causing surfaces to attract, and a short-range bridging attraction is observed when two polyelectrolyte layers span both surfaces. These phenomena depend on the charge density of the polymer backbone and the bulk salt concentration, rather than the chain length in the semidilute regime studied.

Summary: This study presents a detailed investigation on a mixture fluid composed of two different sulfobetaine-type zwitterionic Gemini surfactants, EDABS and EDAES, showing promising salt-resistance, viscoelasticity, and temperature-tolerance properties. The BES-3 fluid with a molar ratio of 1:1 exhibits the best salt-resistance due to strong interactions between the two surfactants. These results suggest strong potential for the BES-3 fluid to be used as a rheological modifier in fracturing fluid and oil-displacing agents.

Summary: The dynamic behaviors of polyzwitterions, PSBP, are studied using various techniques. Two relaxation modes, fast and slow, are observed in both solution and gel-like state, with varying concentrations of polyzwitterion and NaCl. The slow mode is dominated by chain aggregations, especially in the gel-like state where enhanced topological entanglements and ionic interactions contribute to its behavior.

Summary: In this study, a high-performance coating with low environmental impact was synthesized using urushiol-based benzoxazine containing tertiary amines as the precursor, and a sulfobetaine moiety into the benzoxazine group was introduced. This sulfobetaine-functionalized urushiol-based polybenzoxazine coating (poly(U-ea/sb)) was capable of killing marine biofouling bacteria and resisting protein attachment. The coating exhibited high antibacterial and algal inhibition activity and effectively prevented microbial adherence. This dual-functional crosslinkable zwitterionic polymer provides new ideas for the development of green marine antifouling coating materials.
